To fill the gap, this Manual of Military German has been prepared, but the future needs of classes in his- torical, journalistic, and scientific German have con- stantly been kept in mind. Not only have the require- ments of the committee been complied with in the grammatical outline, word lists, tables, and reading material but topics of more general interest, varying in style and in subject matter, have been treated. Special attention has been paid to official reports, ab- breviations, orders, and proclamations. In the accounts of naval engagements, British as well as German reports are given. A number of the selections deal with the operations of the American forces in France. Roman and Gothic type have both been used, and specimens of German script have been reproduced. The vocabulary is planned to give a definition for every word occurring in the reading selections. Although a telegram from Washington announced that official censorship of the book was not necessary, it was thought advisable nevertheless to have the proof sheets gone over by some one not connected with our IV PREFACE own department. Specimens of German Script 251 ABBREVIATIONS 254 VOCABULARY . 257 OUTLINE OF GERMAN GRAMMAR OUTLINE OF GERMAN GRAMMAR THE ALPHABET The German alphabet, like the English, has twenty-six " letters. The type is the so-called Gothic," although the " " Roman type (as in English) is also used. Likewise, German can be written in German or in Roman script. The s of Roman type is represented in German by or f; the former is used at the end of a word or a component of a word. Likewise, fj (= ss or sz) is used after a long vowel, before t, and at the end of a word or component; ff is used between two short vowels. A capital begins every noun or word used as a noun, also the pronoun Sie, you. The pronoun ich, /, and proper adjec- tives which can be inflected are not capitalized. A vowel is usually long if doubled, if followed by h, if accented and followed by one consonant; it is usually short if followed by two consonants. When a word is divided into syllables, the last of two or more consonants goes with the following vowel. A compound word is divided into its logical components; the combina- tions ch, ph, sch, ss OS), st, th, and in foreign words the combinations W, br, dl, dr, gl, gr, kl, [kr, pi, pr, tl, tr, are not divided. Punctuation marks in Gothic type are like the English, except that the first quotation mark is on the line instead of above. The rules for the use of punctuation are much the same in both languages. In German the exclamation point (instead of the comma or dash) is used after the ad- dress in formal letters; all dependent clauses in German are set off by commas. Round the lips as if to pronounce o in gold, and then, without changing the position of the lips, pronounce a as in hate. o short. Round the lips as before and pronounce e as in set. u long. Round the lips as if to pronounce oo in moon, then pronounce ee as in. feet. The sound is like u in the French une. u short. Round lips as before, and pronounce i as in sit. Diphthongs ai = i in mine. ei = ei in height or i in Wte. au = ou in mouse, eu = oy in 6oi/. = = aw o?/ in 6oy. ie ie in believe or i in machine. It is to be kept in mind that English letters in the above tables indicate approximately the German sound. Letters not in the above tables are pronounced approximately the same in both languages, but final b and d are often like p and t. DECLENSION In German, as in English, there are two numbers (singular and plural) and three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter). German has four cases: Nominative, used as subject of the verb and as a predi- cate after the verb to be. Genitive, to denote possession. Dative, indirect object. Accusative, direct object. These are the principal uses of the various cases. Definite Article, der, die, das, the masc. fern. neut. plur. These words, along with the article der, we shall refer to as the der-words. Declension of the indefinite article ein, a, an, one masc. fern. neut. N. ein eine ein G. eines einer eines D. einem einer einem A. einen eine ein Note that ein has no ending in the masculine nominative and in the neuter nominative and accusative. It has no plural; other words in this class have plurals like dieser. Like ein are declined kein, no, not a, and the possessive adjectives mein, my, dein, thy, sein, his, its, unser, our, euer, your, ihr, her, their, Ihr, your. We shall refer to these words as the em-words. NOUNS 1. In this book, the definite article (indicating the gender) and the ending of the plural will be given. 2.     Journal of Aeronautical History Paper 2021/01 Ludwig, Rudolf and Emil Rüb – Forgotten German Aeronautical and Rotating-Wing Pioneers Berend G. van der Wall Senior Scientist German Aerospace Center (DLR), Braunschweig, Germany ABSTRACT Ludwig Rudolf Rüb, a passionate inventor and enthusiastic – but mostly under-funded – visionary lived in poverty most of his life and is virtually unknown in the rotorcraft community. His first inventions covered combustion engines and motorcycles. Around 1900 he built a paddle-wheel plane under contract to Count Zeppelin, next he designed and built a first version of a coaxial rotor helicopter in Munich, and then he moved to Augsburg to build a large fixed-wing aircraft. None of these were ever finished. At the beginning of the First World War, with support of the German army, he took up a refined version of his coaxial rotor helicopter concept as a highly agile and maneuverable replacement of the observation balloons used in those times, which also was intended to take an active part in warfare by installing a machine gun or dropping bombs. It included some astonishing advanced features and, with the help of his sons, construction was finished and ground testing started in June 1918. The end of the war immediately stopped all work. The Treaty of Versailles demanded the destruction of that vehicle, bringing an end to Rüb’s aeronautical work. Ludwig Rüb, a bright yet uneducated person with good ideas, died in 1918 without having seen his rotors turning. 1. Indeed, throughout the conflict a perpetual reactionary arms race existed to counter and hopefully conquer the enemy’s latest aeroplane technology. Nowhere was this more evident than with single-seat scouts. Better known today as ‘fighter aeroplanes’, single-seat scouts were born as a direct result of two-seater aerial reconnaissance and artillery observation. Such infantry cooperation aeroplanes were crucial for the furtherance of army strategic and tactical planning for ground force success. This was particularly the case on the static Western Front, where trench-based warfare throttled any cavalry-based reconnaissance. Without exaggeration, two-seater photographic reconnaissance was as important in World War I as satellites are today. Naturally, it became desirable for all combatants not only to amass as much intelligence as possible via two-seater excursions over the frontlines but to simultaneously prevent the enemy from achieving the same.

Young men volunteered for service in the air to escape the horrors of the trenches and their exploits made them into heroes a war-weary public could revere. As valuable as this diversion proved to civilian morale, it contributed little, if anything, to the military victory. Another global conflict broke out before aviation’s destructive power matured into a potential war winning force. This characterization has allowed historians to discuss World War I without any meaningful analysis of what role aviation played in the fighting. Connections between the air war and ground and naval operations are missing from most contemporary accounts of the war. This dissertation argues that airmen contributed greatly, shaping the manner in which armies and navies functioned in ways that influenced the outcome of battles and the length of the war. Reconnaissance, observation and photography made up the branch of World War I military and naval aeronautics that most significantly impacted the fighting.

    GERMANIA INDEX VOLS 1-40 to 31 December 2004 From the INTRODUCTION to the 1995 Index Most Indexes are uneven, and this one is no exception. That is to say, it can award a single entry to some substantial and primary article, while using the same amount of space to refer to, say, a lone post-mark or one line of obscure information. While this is, to some extent, the nature of the beast, it has been partially mitigated by italicising some of the major research or review articles. At first sight the Index may appear to reveal random preferences for either German or English terms. In actuality, I have tried to give dominance to the term that we would probably use in conversation, regardless of the language from which the word was drawn. So, for example, my preference lay with Anschluss, Bahnpost, Inselpost, Rohrpost, and Zusammendrucke; and with castle, exchange control, Hitler Youth, stamps, and Upper Silesia. For these, the main compilation of references will be found against the term in the preferred language, but it is often possible to reach it through the other language. Of course, some terms broke about even (e.g., Feldpost and fieldpost, Vorlaufer and forerunner; to say nothing of seapost and Seepost...), and for this group the main listing is usually in German, with entry again available through the English term. There are a lot of terms that only specialists use frequently - for example, Durchlaufstempel, Nachtraglich eingezogen. I have most commonly used the German form, often not even attempting to make entry possible through an English approximation.

  • Lighter-Than-Air Collection
    Lighter-Than-Air Collection The Lighter-Than-Air Society, originally known as the Wingfoot Lighter-Than-Air Society, was founded in 1952 by a group of Goodyear Aircraft employees. Its membership currently includes approximately 850 members from many countries. The purpose of the Lighter-Than-Air Society is to further knowledge pertaining to the history, science and techniques of buoyant flight; to encourage the use of lighter-than-air transportation; and to establish and maintain a library and museum on lighter-than-air. For more information see their website www.blimpinfo.com. In 1964, the Akron Public Library entered into an agreement with the Society to house its collection of books. This collection maintained by the Special Collections Division, contains approximately 1200 books on the historical and technical aspects of zeppelins, blimps, rigid and non-rigid airships, and manned and unmanned balloons. The collection also includes some fiction titles, and the Society Newsletter, Buoyant Flight.
