MIN. BID AUGUST RARE SOUL AUCTION & A JOAN DOVALLE LET ME GO SPORT 102 VG+ 350 Absolutely corking Detroit version of the Big Maybelle record and a long-term rarity. Why this has never been an absolute monster is beyond us. Not mint by any means but plays well. Check out the soundbite (particularly if you don’t know this amazing track). B WILLIE JONES WHERE’S MY MONEY MR PEACOCK 104 M- 400 D Red-hot R&B dancer has remained scarce since it first came to everyone’s attention and is probably a bigger dance floor packer than it has ever been. C THE FI-DELS TRY A LITTLE HARDER KEYMEN 106 M- 200 Both this and the other Northern classic on the same label by the Furys are much rarer discs than was long appreciated. Records like these hardly ever show up in the States today. Pure magic in the grooves of course and a group formed in the U.S. Marine Corps hence their name, from the corps’ motto ‘Semper Fidelis’ (always faithful). D SAMMY GAHA THANK YOU THANK YOU RIGHT ON! 103 M- 200 The Canadian Right On! Label is a complete mystery, clearly it totally copies (in design) Dave Godin’s seventies UK label…. But Godin knew nothing about it at all. Some releases even hints at Godin’s musical preferences, sexual orientation etc etc. Bizarre. Anyway, this release is a 1977 modern soul dancer that also came out on a very obscure French label. Rare on both sides of the Atlantic then. E SONNY ALLEN & THE I LOVE YOU SONNY BABY REO 8878 M- 350 ROCKETTES A very obscure Canadian release with absolutely no sign of a U.S. release whatsoever despite the fact that this is a superb midtempo cut from a combo known for their fifties ‘lindy hop’ dance moves – listen to this one – you won’t regret it. Don’t think this is the same guy who recorded on the Detroit label Hitpack but they’re both soulful. F IVORYS PLEASE STAY DESPENZA 12266 M- 700 As far as we know the Ivorys are still one of the great unknowns of Chicago soul and the fact that this is on Barry Despenza’s label is about all we can give you. Despenza was an A&R man for ABC who knew his way around the music business hence this one going to Wand Records… but this one is the original! G TONY CLARKE LANDSLIDE CHESS 1979 WD M- 700 A perfect copy of the all-time classic which is so, so, desirable on a white deejay complete with that lovely ‘promotional use’ watermarked paper on the label. H HARRY MOON AND STOP (YOU’RE BREAKING SIN 4553 M- 700 THE FIDE MY HEART) Very obscure and rare version of the Indelgents/Dream Merchants record – as it is produced by the writer George Guess it might just be the first version. The flipside ‘Woman’s Man’ is also a superb harmony dancer and we’ve included a soundbite of that one too. I STUDIO BAND YOU MADE ME MAD ACETATE VG+ 150 (INSTRUMENTAL) Yes, the vocal to this one was issued on Pittsburgh’s VAL label (and is on the flipside of this acetate) but here is the unissued instrumental to this storming dancer on a very rare, if not one-off, acetate. Would have been huge at Wigan! J YVONNE BAKER YOU DIDN’T SAY A PARKWAY 140 WD VG++ 500 WORD Not much to say about this track that hasn’t been said before. Suffice it to say that it is in very good condition with only a few light marks. K THE BAY BROTHERS WHAT DOES IT TAKE MILENNIUM 11810 M- 150 (TO WIN YOUR LOVE) Easily the rarest version of the Jr Walker song but actually very rare on an issue copy with the flipside ‘One And Only’. Virtually all copies are promos with ‘What Does It Take’ on both sides. L FRANK FOSTER HARLEM RUMBLE TRIODE 120 M- 400 Fast becoming the nation’s top instrumental floor packer, this also came out as the Grambling College Marching Band – perhaps better to have it by Frank Foster who is almost certainly the saxophonist on this one – and quite a famous jazz name venturing down ‘Soul Road’. M JAMO THOMAS I SPY (FOR THE FBI) POLYDOR 56709 M- 350 WD Extremely rare promo of the FIRST UK release of this classic issued almost simultaneously with the U.S. Thomas release. Not to be confused Polydor 56755 from three years later issued due to demand from the embryonic Northern scene (which is relatively common). N RAY CHARLES I DON’T NEED NO HMV 1566 D M- 150 DOCTOR From ’65 to ’67 Charles came up with a slew of fine soul dancers as he strove to keep up with the times. He had little success with any of them especially here in the UK, where record company executives must have pined for a return to ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ – types. The result is a scarce item and a fine-looking bright green promo copy. O PATRICE HOLLOWAY LOVE AND DESIRE UK CAPITOL 15484 M- 300 WD A superb copy of this tremendous double-sider has not seen many (any?) needles since its 25th November 1966 UK issue…. The Beach Boys ‘Good Vibrations’ was number one in the charts on the same label, so I don’t think UK Capitol were too worried about the utter failure of Patrice’s superb effort. P RAY POLLARD IT’S A SAD THING UNITED ARTISTS VG++ 200 1133 WD Another one from ’66 (27th May to be exact) and big-voiced Pollard picks up the tempo ever-so- slightly from ‘The Drifter’, with a faint latin-twinge to it. Both 45’s met with indifference, not only here but, more strangely, in America too. Ray was a minor actor as well as a fantastic singer… in fact he had an ‘extras’ part in ‘Ghost Busters’! Q BEN ZINE VILLAGE OF TEARS PARKWAY 996 VG++ 200 Wigan monster spin from ‘77/’78 is VERY RARE on a genuine stock ISSUE copy. Think about it – nearly all copies are white promos. Nice copy, just a little ‘greying’ on the vinyl. R TAMMY ST. JOHN NOBODY KNOWS PYE 17042 WD M- 150 WHAT’S GOIN’ ON Stomping cover version of the Chiffons’ record was quite a big spin at the same time as the above Ben Zine disc. UK only, and nice to own on a mint white promo. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 CHUCK BERNARD INDIAN GIVER SATELITE 2005 M- 10 Typically, hard-edged soul mover, the way only Chicago could make ‘em. 2 BROOKS O’DELL I’M YOUR MAN GOLD 216 M- 20 Top rate New York beat ballad, a great example of the style. 3 MARY WELLS USE YOUR HEAD 20TH CENTURY FOX M- 15 555 Beautiful floaty midtempo stuff from post-Motown Mary Wells. 4 SHORTY LONG NIGHT FO’ LAST SOUL 35040 M- 10 All-but-forgotten Motown dancer, interesting instrumental version on the reverse side. 5 JIMMY HUGHES YOU REALLY KNOW FAME 6410 WD M- 15 HOW TO HURT A GUY Nice white promo of Jimmy’s fine Northern side. Same backing as Toussaint Mc Call ‘I’m Undecided’ album-only (Ronn). 6 ESTHER PHILLIPS I’VE NEVER FOUND A KUDU 910 M- 15 MAN Superb version, few copies only, don’t miss it! 7 Z. Z. HILL YOU DON’T LOVE ME KENT 4550 M- 15 Yet another brilliant 60’s mover from the great Arzell J. Hill. 8 EDDIE FLOYD THINGS GET BETTER STAX 187 M- 10 What a great piece of Stax Northern Soul – probably in our all-time 100. 9 J. J. JACKSON I DIG GIRLS CALLA 125 M- 15 Forgotten Torch spin – both gritty and frantic. 10 DUSTY SPRINGFIELD HERE SHE COMES PHILIPS 40270 M- 8 An ‘unknown’- well surely not, but it sure pounds along and recorded in the States as well. THEY’RE BACK! LIMITED AMOUNT ONLY NORTHERN SOUL CONNOISSEURS PACK £300 (inc. p&p) 100 Mostly mint 45’s (a few used or with label wear but not wrecked) Mostly U.S. label (some Canadian). All originals. Northern stompers, Modern and the odd beat ballad. We always sell out of these deals…. And quickly. Don’t miss out. P.S. Each pack contains one 45 listed at £125 in a certain East Midlands price guide. NORTHERN SOUL RARITIES 11 MICHAEL & MAN WITHOUT A WOMAN RCA VICTOR 9244 M- 150 RAYMOND WD 12 ESTHER PHILLIPS JUST SAY GOODBYE ATLANTIC 2324 M- 125 13 DEE DEE SHARP DEEP DARK SECRET CAMEO 335 M- 150 14 THE BING BONG KING 456297 M- 150 DETERMINATIONS 15 SAM NESBIT BLACK MOTHER GOOSE / AMOS 154 D M- 500 CHASE THOSE CLOUDS AWAY 16 DEJAH AHRES LET ME BE YOUR GIRL VERVE 10614 D M- 125 This is the rare vocal flip to ‘Real Jive Guy’ – most copies are the instrumental of the same song.
