Heart Wood® Cellars Photo By: Tim Fuller DRINKING IN THE VERDE VALLEY How the hills and deserts of central Arizona gave birth to some of the boldest wines in America. FEBRUARY 7, 2018 When Californians Valerie and Daniel Wood purchased a second home in Arizona’s Verde River Valley in the early aughts, they were surprised by the quality of the wines they found. Many of them were comparable to the ones they drank back home; they also compared favorably with the Grenaches, Syrahs, and Cabernets they’d enjoyed in the southern wine-growing regions of Italy, France, and Spain. “But what intrigued us the most was the idea of wine grapes growing in the desert,” Valerie says. “So, we spent some time talking to people about them.” They learned that the Verde Valley has many similarities, both in elevation and climate, to more celebrated wine regions, including—yes—the south of France, Italy, and Spain. “Those growing regions are around 30 to 50 degrees latitude,” Valerie says. “Here, it’s 34 degrees. As for the extreme heat of the Grand Canyon State, it’s not as big a problem as it seems. “The elevation affords us a cooling off period during the evening,” she says. “It gives grapes time to rest and prepare for the next day of sun and heat.” She also says the terroir, which ranges sporadically from limestone rich soil to desert sand, also produces bold wines with fascinating, and at times unique, profiles. When they bought the house in Arizona, the Woods were working high-power corporate jobs at McDonald’s. -
Provisioner Bona Fide Pure Arizona, Arizona White Table Wine 2014, 57
Provisioner Bona Fide Pure Arizona, Arizona White Table Wine 2014, 57% Colombard, 30% Chenin Blanc, 13% Malvasia 13.3% Alc • The Provisioner White is fresh, crisp and fruity with perfect amount of body. It’s wonderful as an accompaniment to a light lunch, with serious dinner foods and, of course, all by itself. • In early frontier days the small-town general store was the social hub and lifeline for the hardy pioneers that settled the American Southwest. These stores, or provisioners, sold everything from nails to flour, blankets to whiskey. Arizona, despite efforts to tame her, is still a wild place with many secrets lying just below the surface. The most recent discovery is the propensity for the vine to thrive here and to yield a fine nectar that is indisputably Southwestern. Provisioner wines capture and share the soul of this place, and they do so in the spirit of the old-time general store: they support new exploration, they push us into new territory and make this quest we are on a little more honest and enjoyable. And all of this without breaking the bank. Drink well. These are wines for the people! • Fort Bowie Vineyard, Cochise County, Arizona • Fort Bowie Vineyards is the second oldest vineyard in the state. Planted in 1984, the massive French Colombard vines on the site are a big as a foot in trunk diameter. Additionally, the deep, loamy soils and warm summers (the warmest of our vineyards) lend to fruit driven wines that are approachable and young. • At an elevation of 3750 feet, Fort Bowie has two distinct vineyards, the Shop block and Lacey’s block. -

April 28, 2007 VINEYARD IS a NEW STAGE for ROCKER Richard
April 28, 2007 VINEYARD IS A NEW STAGE FOR ROCKER Richard Ruelas, The Arizona Republic As an amateur winemaker, Maynard James Keenan is having great success, but that's largely because of his other occupation: lead singer for the multiplatinum hard rock band Tool. "Isn't it amazing?" Keenan said during a tour of his vineyards in Arizona's Verde Valley. "Because I wrote a song, apparently my wine is desirable." Keenan sold out of his first batch of Caduceus wine. He released his 2005 vintage this month, on his 43rd birthday. During the first week it was available through his Web site, he was selling $10,000 worth of wine daily. The Primer Paso sells for $49.99; the Naga for $69.69. The people buying the wine have not had the chance to taste a drop of it. Nor read any reviews. They are buying it because it's made by Keenan, a man who made his name singing, or some would say shrieking, about Satan and the violent nature of man. Admittedly these are unlikely credentials for a vintner. One day, Keenan hopes his wine sells because of its quality, rather than his celebrity. But for now, he's a success in a business that requires a lot of up-front investment, and he's not about to complain. "I'm a businessman, and I'm going to sell you wine. But it's just funny to me," he said. "Imagine someone discovering something artistic and something of substance because of Vince Neil," Keenan said, mentioning the lead singer of metal band Motley Crue. -
Radu Aurelian Panait
RADU AURELIAN PANAIT COMMUNICATION THROUGH MUSIC AND ITS NUANCES CASE STUDY: MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN Radu Aurelian Panait Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay is an analytical and descriptive perspective on the ways in which communication can be achieved through music. I expand on this point of view by taking into account the direct (verbal) as well as the indirect communication, in the instances in which it appears in the context of music. As follows, I set out to present the genealogy of the creative process behind the American singer Maynard James Keenan, as well as the projects in which he is involved. I will take into account the appropriateness of semiotic principles on the subject at hand, as well as the different aesthetic and philosophical levels relevant to the topic. To begin with, I propose a brief introduction into Keenan's life. Next, I explore the communication and aesthetics of his lyrics in two different ways (corresponding to the main musical projects that he is part of). Finally, I highlight his relevance and influence by means of artistic and philosophical insight. Keywords: music, communication, Maynard James Keenan, semiotics, aesthetics. -

Caduceus Cellar Merkin Vineyards Country: USA Region: Arizona |New Mexico Appellation: Arizona |New Mexico Producer: Caduceus Cellars Founded: 2005 Annual Production: 4500 cases Farming: Sustainable Website: www.caduceus.org Caduceus Cellars is yet another venture of Maynard James Keenan. This international rock star has set out to rock the wine business. Keenan researched wine-growing regions around the world to identify the varieties best suited for the high desert conditions found in the Verde Valley, Cochise County and regions in New Mexico. As a result, the winery is producing some of Arizona's finest wines using Spanish, Italian and Rhone varieties. Arizona resident since 1995, Former West Point Cadet/soldier, Co-founder of International Recording Acts TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and PUSCIFER, and Co-founder and owner of Arizona Stronghold Vineyards. Maynard made his way to Arizona from Ohio/Michigan via Boston and Los Angeles. His intuition serves him well. Having already dove headfirst into his winemaking venture, Maynard found out from a distant relative that wine making is in his blood. His Great Grandfather, “Spirito” Marzo, had vineyards and made wine in Venaus, Italy, just North of Turino in Piemonte. Maynard along with his fiancée, Jennifer, are producing roughly 4500 cases a year in their tiny underground cement facility known as The Bunker. Open-topped 1/2 ton bin carbonic maceration for the Reds, and whole cluster pressed stainless steel cold fermentation for the Whites and Rosés. The epitome of a boutique owner owned and operated winery. Merkin Vineyards currently has five different blocks. 4800 ft above sea level, Merkin West is limestone-like chalky sedimentary rock. -
Fear Inoculum
Tool – Fear Inoculum (86:00, CD, Digital, Tool Dissectional, 2019) Mainstream. Wieso muss alles in irgendwelche Schubladen passen? -
