  • Jewish Experience on Film an American Overview
Jewish Experience on Film An American Overview by JOEL ROSENBERG ± OR ONE FAMILIAR WITH THE long history of Jewish sacred texts, it is fair to characterize film as the quintessential profane text. Being tied as it is to the life of industrial science and production, it is the first truly posttraditional art medium — a creature of gears and bolts, of lenses and transparencies, of drives and brakes and projected light, a creature whose life substance is spreadshot onto a vast ocean of screen to display another kind of life entirely: the images of human beings; stories; purported history; myth; philosophy; social conflict; politics; love; war; belief. Movies seem to take place in a domain between matter and spirit, but are, in a sense, dependent on both. Like the Golem — the artificial anthropoid of Jewish folklore, a creature always yearning to rise or reach out beyond its own materiality — film is a machine truly made in the human image: a late-born child of human culture that manifests an inherently stubborn and rebellious nature. It is a being that has suffered, as it were, all the neuroses of its mostly 20th-century rise and flourishing and has shared in all the century's treach- eries. It is in this context above all that we must consider the problematic subject of Jewish experience on film. In academic research, the field of film studies has now blossomed into a richly elaborate body of criticism and theory, although its reigning schools of thought — at present, heavily influenced by Marxism, Lacanian psycho- analysis, and various flavors of deconstruction — have often preferred the fashionable habit of reasoning by decree in place of genuine observation and analysis.

Cast: Cher, Dennis Quaid, Liam Neeson. Summary: Mystery melodrama set in contemporary Washington, D.C. A Supreme Court justice takes his own life. A woman is found dead--the victim of a grisly murder. A homeless Vietnam vet (Neeson) stands accused. Kathleen Riley (Cher) is an overworked Washington, D.C. public defender who needs a vacation. Instead, she is assigned another case. But this is no ordinary crime, with no ordinary criminal. Lobbyist Eddie Sanger (Quaid) gets saddled with jury duty just when a critical bill is coming up for vote. While on jury duty, Eddie discovers evidence critical to Kathleen’s case and contacts her outside the courtroom--a violation of the law. • Newsletter C-14
NEWSLETTER C-14 It’s Summertime, and the living is easy … We have reached the halfway point in this challenging year and still there is no certainty about when we can return to our familiar Wednesday evening slots. At least we have warmer weather, and in the words of Gershwin’s famous tune, the fish are jumpin and the cotton is high, so perhaps you are bbqing in the garden with a rigged up white sheet and all the necessary technology for an outdoors screening of a favourite summer movie? Of course, open-air cinema is no new thing, and Southampton has boasted just a few such presentations over the past few years. In 2020, several films were scheduled such as The Breakfast Club and Dirty Dancing, and it is rumoured that on the weekend of July 10/11 this year there will be two outdoor screenings in the city, but it is not clear where or when. Nevertheless, going back through the years, there are plenty of summery film titles to consider for your back garden shindig (and yes, we (still/always) know what you did last summer) … Perhaps the best place to start our list of aestival films is, well, A Summer Place, a 1959 romantic drama directed by Delmer Daves, known for his 3.10 to Yuma (the original) and many other great westerns. In the U.K. Percy Faith’s version of the theme song from the film, which won a Grammy, is probably better remembered than the film itself. On a similarly musical note, how well you recall A Summer Holiday may depend on your age – it hit our fab screens (and the pop charts) in 1963 just when continental travel was beginning to open up to Britons (oh, how times are different presently).

  • New Endowments Given
50th year of ^Scribe publication The Num ber One College Newspaper .In the Northeast University of Bridgeport 52:2 September 13, 1979 25 cents New endowments given By GEORGE DALEK NEWS EDITOR Nine University faculty members were awarded endowed profes sorships in recognition of their scholarly achievements and teach ing abilities in the fields of accounting, history, music, gerontology, psychology, engineering, chemistry, and computer science. Univesity President Leland Miles introduced the new endowed chair holders to students assembled at Mertens Theatre for the Uni versity’s opening convocation last Thursday. The endowed chairs, named for special donors, provide the faculty members with a stipend (a fixed or regular payment), which depends on the size and terms of the original gifts. The nine faculty members were recommended by a faculty com mittee and the Deans’ Council. Awarded chairs were: Noble D. Cook, history; Andrew Demotses, accounting; Mark Edinberg, gerontol ogy; Alberta S. Gilinsky, psychology; Roger S. Pressman, computer engineering; Robert Preston, music; Dhwanwant S. Sethi, chemistry; Igal Staw, biomedical engineering; and Boris Verkhovsky, mathe matics. “Today the nine new chairs awards bring the total to 28, making UB one of the few universities in the country to have such an exten sive program in recognition of faculty achievement,” said Miles. Three University professors were awarded endowed chairs last May at the University’s commencement exercises. They were: Christopher Collier, history; Martin Margulies, law; and Richard Allen, literature. At a press conference held last Friday, Miles stated that before he reactivated the endowed chairs program in 1976,15 of the 28 chairs had lapsed.

Getting to Know... Sports Movies Filmed in and About Indiana Indiana is renowned not only as a state that loves its sports, but one that has contributed many indelible moments in basketball, football, auto racing and more. It’s no surprise then that over the last three-plus decades, Indiana has been the setting for some of the greatest sports films ever made – most of which are based (albeit some more loosely than others) on real-life events and Hoosiers.
