Denis O' Callaghan was courtmartialled and sentenced to death, later commuted to 10 years penal servitude following the 1916 Easter Rising. Previous to Easter Week O' Callaghan had served as a Company Lieutenant and during the fighting served as officer in charge of barricades in the Church Street area and claims later to have been placed in charge of the Four Courts area after Frank Fahy had fallen ill. Following his release in 1917 Denis O' Callaghan undertook organisational work for the Irish Volunteers in County Kerry as well as election work for Sinn Fein in Armagh and Clare and served in the Intelligence Department, General Headquarter Irish Volunteers under E. J. Duggan. He also claimed unsuccessfully for service from 1919 to 1923 anf file also refers to activities with and membership of the Gaelic League, Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and IRB.
