Historic London City University London Global Summer School 2011: Historic London Module http://www.city.ac.uk/arts/global-citizenship/historic-london.html Course Dates: July 2-July 29 2011 Credits: 7.5 ECTS London is one of the world’s great global cities with a history that stretches back to the Roman times. In this module students will learn about the exciting history of the city and the development of London as an international centre of importance through an interactive series of lectures, museum visits, live performances, art exhibitions, readings and projects. We will use the writings of William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, William Blake, Samuel Pepys, Winston Churchill and others to explore the changing ways in which the city of London has been portrayed and understood. This module provides a unique opportunity for students from around the world to study in and about one of the world’s most international cities. The Historic London module will explore: - Roman London - Tudor London - Shakespearean Theatre - The City as a commercial centre past and present - Victorian London - Tubes, Trains, and Transport in the City - World War II and the Blitz - Famous London Residents - London and the Making of Modern Art - Multicultural London Excursions to a variety of cultural sites and events are embedded within the course. Planned excursions include: - Tower of London - Globe Theatre - Westminster Abbey - National Portrait Gallery - Hampton Court Palace - British Museum - Imperial War Museum - Tate Modern - Tate Britain - 2012 Olympics Site As part of the module assessment students will undertake a written project and group presentation. This course is open to university students in good standing from all over the world and from all disciplines. After successfully completing the course, students will receive a transcript from City University London for a total of 7.5 ECTS credits.
