In my home of New York City, winter can be blustery and cold. This city is a fair weather metropolis, seasonally I embracing outdoor life in warm weather only. The coming winter of 2020-21, with the ongoing need for social distancing and outdoor congregations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will likely force a reconsideration of the typical retreat indoors at the arrival of cold. From this vantage point of changing seasons and the need to rethink winter practices, Thomas Wickman’s Snowshoe Country: An Environmental and Cultural History of Winter in the Early American Northeast is an reminder that the interiority of a New York winter is a construct of this community and era. -

L E G E N D S O F F LIGHT LOCKHEED’S SUPER CONSTELLATION Inspired by the Constellation’s Legacy, the Elegance of Air Travel Returns with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Lockheed Super Constellation, rated by some as the sexiest propeller driven plane, stars in the first-ever 15/70 3D IMAX® film, Legends of Flight. In its heyday, the Super Constellation was as streamlined as the fins on a Cadillac and many times faster. It had all the elegance of a Park Avenue model and the attitude of a B-movie starlet. Above all, the Super Connie epitomized all things American. Even when parked at a ramp it spoke volumes about modern intercontinental flight and the new thrill of flying. This plane brought people to airports just to look and dream. And, how its engines roared! A total of 856 Connies and Super Constellations were built at Lockheed’s Burbank assembly plant, a stone’s throw from the movie studios and perhaps part of the reason this plane looked so good. Four types were built during the production range and each had the distinctive triple-tail design and graceful dolphin fuselage design. What many first-time fliers didn’t know or care about was that the Constellation’s signature wing was effectively the same as that used on the lethal WWII P-38 Lightning. Nor would they know that the triple tail design was actually a move to save money by allowing the plane to fit into existing hangars. It cruised at over 300 MPH while passengers enjoyed sumptuous first-class meals. -

Former International Space Station Commander Terry Virts helped to install the outpost’s 360-degree observation module, which not only helped him to take more photos than any astronaut before him, but also gives those who see the images a deeper understanding of our planet’s climate, economics, and place in the universe. Themes: space, exploration, science, climate, photography Biography NASA astronaut Terry Virts has served as pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour, a crew member on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and most recently as commander of the International Space Station during 200 consecutive days in space—one of the longest continuous space missions of any NASA astronaut. Terry appeared in the 2016 IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space that features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet and humanity's impact on it. Much of it was shot be Terry while aboard (and outside) the International Space Station. His photography, which provides incredible aerial views of Earth and the vast space that surrounds it is featured in the National Geographic book View From Above, which was released in October 2017. 9. IMAX Technology and the Tourist Gaze
Charles R. Acland IMAX TECHNOLOGY AND THE TOURIST GAZE Abstract IMAX grew out of the large and multiple screen lm experiments pro- duced for Expo ’67 in Montréal. Since then, it has become the most suc- cessful large format cinema technology.IMAX is a multiple articulation of technological system, corporate entity and cinema practice. This article shows how IMAX is reintroducing a technologically mediated form of ‘tourist gaze’, as elaborated by John Urry,into the context of the insti- tutions of museums and theme parks. IMAX is seen as a powerful exem- plar of the changing role of cinema-going in contemporary post-Fordist culture, revealing new congurations of older cultural forms and practices. In particular,the growth of this brand of commercial cinema runs parallel to a blurring of the realms of social and cultural activity,referred to as a process of ‘dedifferentiation’. This article gives special attention to the espistemological dimensions of IMAX’s conditions of spectatorship.
