MUSEUM FRIDAY FEATURE The Goddess Nike by Benton Kidd, Curator of Ancient Art nown as Nike to the Greeks (Latin: Victoria), the winged goddess of victory is familiar to many today, but she was far more than anotherK gratuitous, divine beauty. On the contrary, Nike played an integral role in ancient Greek culture, one which prided itself on the spirit of competition. While winning glory and fame is a persistent theme in Greek literature, actual contests of athletics, theater, poetry, art, music, military achievement—and even beauty— fueled the drive in ancient Greeks to achieve and win. One hymn lauds Nike as the one who confers the “mark of sweet renown,” concluding with “…you rule all things, divine goddess.” The widespread veneration of such a goddess is thus not unexpected, but she was not included among the august Olympians. In fact, her origins are likely to be earlier. In our previous discussion of the god Eros, we had occasion to mention Hesiod’s account of creation, known as the Theogony, or the “genesis of the gods.” Perhaps written about 700 BCE, this grand saga in poetry sweeps the reader back to an ancient era in which the Olympian gods engage in an epic battle with the Titans, a truculent race of primeval gods. Hesiod tells us that the battle raged for ten long years, and that the Olympian victory resulted in absolute supremacy over the universe. The Titans were imprisoned in Tartarus, a horrifying black abyss in the Underworld, reserved for punishing the vilest sinners. Some Titans, however, escaped this terrible fate. -

The Oracle and Cult of Ares in Asia Minor Matthew Gonzales ERODOTUS never fails to fascinate with his rich and detailed descriptions of the varied peoples and nations H mustered against Greece by Xerxes;1 but one of his most tantalizing details, a brief notice of the existence of an oracle of Ares somewhere in Asia Minor, has received little comment. This is somewhat understandable, as the name of the proprietary people or nation has disappeared in a textual lacuna, and while restoring the name of the lost tribe has ab- sorbed the energies of some commentators, no moderns have commented upon the remarkable and unexpected oracle of Ares itself. As we shall see, more recent epigraphic finds can now be adduced to show that this oracle, far from being the fantastic product of logioi andres, was merely one manifestation of Ares’ unusual cultic prominence in south/southwestern Asia Minor from “Homeric” times to Late Antiquity. The Theatre of Dionysus
29 NOVEMBER 2018 The Theatre of Dionysus PROFESSOR EDITH HALL On the south slope of the Athenian Acropolis, you can visit the ancient Athenian theatre of Dionysus today. It is here that some of the first dramas as we know them were ever produced. The first excavators to explore the site were the Greek Archaeological Society in 1838. The site contains not only the theatre but the remains of two temples of the god Dionysus, one which was probably built in the 6th century BCE, when Athenian state theatre began to be performed, and the other rather later, after most of our surviving plays premiered. The introduction of theatre began under the tyrant of Athens, Peisistratus, who ruled for most of the mid-6th century BCE. He was responsible for a major expansion of Athenian festivals, including those for Dionysus, an ancient Greek god whose worship goes back to Mycenaean times and is intimately connected with wine cultivation, colonisation, poetry and theatre. But the theatre in which plays were performed in Dionysus’ honour was not originally built of stone. It probably had permanent wooden benches from around 498 BCE, that is, not long after the Athens expelled the tyrant family and inaugurated their first democracy in 507 BCE. The stone theatre we can see today was not to be built until the fourth century, well after the premieres of the great dramas which we can see performed on our 21st- century stages. The theatre consisted of a central dancing floor, circular in the case of Athens but rectangular in some other early theatres. -

BY RYAN CRAIG TEACHER RESOURCE PACK INTRODUCTION This is the year when London welcomes the Olympics and amidst the buzz and anticipation there is a renewed interest in the origins of the Olympic Games. Ancient Greece was not only the birth- place of the Olympiad but of theatre, and many of the plays that were written for the Dionysian festivals, held each springtime in the great amphitheatre beside the Acropolis in Athens, have shaped Western European theatre traditions. The Unicorn presents two plays written by Sophocles more than 2000 years ago whose themes and concerns still resonate with contemporary audiences. Ryan Craig’s adaptation of Antigone, How to Think the Unthinkable, and Nancy Harris’s adaptation of Philoctetes, The Man with the Disturbingly Smelly Foot, will be a memorable introduction to these classics of Greek theatre for young audiences. These resources aim to oer context for teachers and students coming to see the plays and to link to and enhance other work teachers might be doing in the classroom.
