Bennett and Netanyahu were scheduled to meet in person but ended up speaking by phone, with Yamina charging that the Prime Minister’s Office was “unwilling” to schedule a face-to-face meeting. The phone call came ahead of the scheduled swearing-in of the government, with Yamina threatening to bolt for the opposition as the talks with Likud drag on. Bennett, outgoing defense minister, demanded the health and transportation ministries, and the chairmanship of the Knesset’s powerful Law, Constitution and Justice Committee. A Justice Ministry statement said that Mandelblit received threats mainly through text messages in the last day. "These harassments and threats, apparently organized, continued throughout the night and morning. The harassment included threats, and hateful and incitement speech," read the statement. Senior judiciary officials estimated last weekend that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's supporters will escalate the attacks on the attorney general as the prime minister's trial approaches, mainly through social media. 2 Arutz Sheva Pompeo: Only Israel Will Decide on Sovereignty US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Israel Hayom newspaper following his diplomatic meetings with Israeli officials that "Israel has the right and the duty to make a decision regarding sovereignty in Judea and Samaria." The Secretary of State said that Gantz and Netanyahu, if they wished, could promote a sovereignty move. "They will have to find the way forward together. I reminded them that in the end - this is an Israeli decision. They will have both the right and the duty to make a decision on how they intend to do it." "We talked about ways to advance the peace plan, Trump's vision of peace. We talked not only about the issue of annexation, but about many other issues related to it - how to deal with all parties involved, and how to make sure the move is done properly to bring about a result in accordance with the vision of peace,” the US Secretary of State concluded. Satellite images from the area captured May 12 by ISI show bulldozers at the entrance of a 15-foot-wide structure on the northwestern edge of the base, the agency said. Images from April 1 show an excavator and bulldozers near the new construction site. The length of the constructed tunnel remains unknown, with ISI assessing that the structure will not be significantly long due to the rigid terrain in the region. According to ISI, the tunnel is fit to be used as a storage facility for vehicles carrying advanced missile weaponry and provide shelter to its operators. Touting “Israeli technology and Israeli medical expertise” and the possibility for cooperation between the US and Israel to save lives, Pompeo then added: “You’re a great partner, you share information, unlike other countries that obfuscate and try to hide that information – and we’ll talk about that country, too.” Netanyahu chuckled, interjecting: “The most important thing is generating that information and then sharing the information.” This was the only time during their public statements in which Netanyahu interrupted Pompeo. Israel announced the formation of a committee in October to review foreign investments, but its work is not transparent, its purview is extremely limited, and it does not have the authority to stop any deals, among other weaknesses, leading US officials to lament that it is insufficiently robust. 3 Jerusalem Post Haniyeh: Hamas Can Kidnap More Israeli Soldiers Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh threatened that the Gaza-based terrorist organization can still kidnap more Israeli soldiers, Channel 12 reported. Speaking to Al Jazeera in an interview, which was held in honor of the 72nd anniversary of the Nakba, was held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, as the Hamas leader has not returned to the Gaza Strip in the last two months. The comment came while he was discussing the prisoner exchange negotiations between Hamas and Israel, as he added that he was still waiting for a breakthrough. "We can increase our loot, our hand is strong," he said, implying that Hamas has the ability to kidnap more soldiers, which can be used as bargaining chips in following negotiations. It was reported last week that Hamas is demanding the release of all ex-prisoners who were re-arrested by Israel after they were released in the 2011 prisoner exchange that freed Gilad Schalit. I24 News Talks Over Reopening Ben Gurion Airport by June 1 Israeli authorities are reportedly holding discussions over possibly reopening Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport to full capacity June 1 as coronavirus cases across the country continue to decline. According to Hebrew-language broadcaster Channel N12, Israel may allow visitors from so-called "green countries" to enter the country after being subjected to a number of Health Ministry protocols. Those on the “green countries" list are nations with relatively low rates of coronavirus infections and have laws requiring the use of personal protective equipment. The emerging plan will also require Israelis to alert Health Ministry officials that they are traveling outside the country and will be subjected to health checks before their departure and once again when they return. Tourism in Israel has been severely crippled since the outbreak of COVID-19 in mid-March, with hotel, restaurant and airline representatives pleading with the government to provide additional relief to their struggling industries and urging fewer restrictions of the freedom of movement. 4 Yedioth Ahronoth– May 14, 2020 Good Luck to Us All By Ben-Dror Yemini ● The government that is to be sworn into office this evening is a far cry from being what most Israelis would consider to be their dream government. It is inflated, it is wasteful, and it’s unclear if it has any ideology. It is all about seats. The opponents of this government found it hard to believe that it would ever get sworn into office. It’s all a sham, they said. This evening we’ll find out if they were right. The new government will be sworn into office after an excessively lengthy period of a vicious, divisive and abusive public conversation. None of the people who led this public conversion are exempt from responsibility. No debate was held about issues of substance. The State of Israel was divided over a single solitary issue: yes Bibi or no Bibi. Even the deal of the century was not given a proper debate. The person most responsible for this is Binyamin Netanyahu. A good part of this violent public conversation emanated from the house in which he lives, with curses that poisoned the air and increased hatred.
