Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31st, 2021

https://www.sca.org/news/resolution-to-suspend-in-person-sca-activity-until-january-31st-2021

During the July 28, 2020, meeting of the Board of Directors for the Society for Creative Anachronism, the following Resolution was passed by unanimous vote and made effective immediately:

Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31st, 2021

I. Whereas, the COVID-19 Global Pandemic has created an unparalleled challenge for the administration of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The Board of Directors acknowledges the health and well-being of the membership and participants of the SCA are of utmost importance;

II. Whereas, the Crowns of the vast majority of North American Kingdoms have petitioned the board to suspend in-person SCA events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

III. Whereas, following consultation with the Kingdom Seneschals of the North American Kingdoms, it appears that this petition is generally supported;

IV. Therefore Now Be It Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors suspends all SCA in-person events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

V. Resolved, Small local gatherings including, but not limited to, archery practice, guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with CDC, State, Provincial, and local health guidelines and recommendations. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;

VI. Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors directs the Society Seneschal to grant a blanket variance to Corpora waiving any required events such as Crown List and Coronation until January 31st, 2021, as well as extending all current reigns until a royal list can be held to determine suitable Heirs;

VII. Resolved, If a Crown or Coronet steps down without Heirs for a Kingdom or Principality, a Regent shall be installed until such time as a royal list may be held to find suitable Heirs and a Coronation or Investiture held. This regent should be installed according to the Kingdom or Principality laws that govern the appointment of Regents, after consultation with the Society Seneschal. If the Kingdom or Principality has no such law, the Kingdom Seneschal (and Principality Seneschal when appropriate) must consult with the Society Seneschal and Society President to determine an appropriate selection method for a Regent;

3 | P a g e

VIII. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors invites Kingdoms who have determined that it is safe to host in-person events before January 31st, 2021, to request a variance from the Society Seneschal to be able to do so. The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;

IX. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors commends the officers, royalty, hard- working membership, and participants who have made it possible for the SCA to continue activities during these trying times.

fficer Reports

From the Seneschal: Unto the steadfast Shire of Rosenfeld: Please continue to share your great endeavors! I love reading and seeing what everyone is creating.

On the last weekend of July a small group of members-- Master Tostig, Lord Adian, Lord Redhammer, and myself-- shifted the Shire’s goods into the new storage facility. In addition there were also two teens and another good gentle from our park who were happy to assist in exchange for pizza. My sincere thanks to all who were able to provide a helping hand. This relocation of goods, voted upon during the July Populace Meeting held via Zoom, will save the Shire a significant amount in annual storage fees.

I continue to look forward to such time as we can attend meetings, events, and marshal activities in person. Until then, I wish for all to stay safe and healthy!

Your ever-striving seneschal, HL Calena di Rosa Nero

From the Herald: I would like to encourage continued discussion within the Shire regarding the possibility of selecting a supporter to submit for our Heraldic Achievement. It is not required for a group to have a supporter, but it is an additional element we can add if we choose to do so. The subject was first brought up by Master Tostig in September last year on the Shire’s Facebook group. At that time there was considerable discussion and the general feeling from the comments appears that the group would be interested in having a supporter of some type, possibly one that represents fauna, such as a stag or bird of prey. If you are not on Facebook and have ideas about a heraldic supporter for the Shire, please make them known to me or our Seneschal.

We currently have three submissions at Laurel, including the Shire’s new/additional populace badge submission. We also have a member’s personal badge re-submission at Kingdom that is in the initial commenting period. I continue to monitor all submissions and will share information as such becomes available. My quarterly report, due by August 5th, has already been sent to Eclipse.

In Humble Service, HL Jessimond of Emerickeskepe

From the Thrown Weapons Marshal: My dear Shire, as we all learned today the SCA year of 2020 has been cancelled. I know we were hoping to be able to gather and enjoy the company of our friends and family, and a lot of planning was done for the Fall event. The eagerness to pitch in and help with the event will be needed in the future, because, through the changing times and disappointments, we will persevere. This isn’t an end, it’s a time to step back, brainstorm, and prepare ourselves for the next year ahead, when our energies and ideas will be able to blossom into actions.

I’d like to bring to the table the real possibility of Rosenfeld hosting War College 2021. I volunteer to serve as autocrat for this event, should it be approved. I believe it would be a fantastic way to not only help the kingdom prepare for Gulf Wars, but also to reenergize Rosenfeld as a whole. Assuming the pandemic is under control by February, this would be the first chance many fighters of the kingdom would have to take the field, that many of the missile competitors would have to test their skills against others, and for artisans to display the works they’ve toiled over these long months in isolation. For the Shire, it would require just as much hard work as the Fall event but would likely increase the holdings of our coffers by a significant amount, without costing us much, if any, more.

Thrown weapons practices are on an indefinite hold, so there is no news to report on that front.

I hope this missive finds you in good health and with happy heart.

Yours in Service, Lady Meg Sterling From the Chronicler: Contributions to the newsletter do not need to be regular monthly features. In fact, they do not even need to be complete articles. Submissions of photos such as works in progress, recently completed projects, or any at-home activities are more than welcome! I always enjoy being able to include local artwork, poems, or lyrics if anyone has been working on such. I also like to include elements within the newsletter that correspond with the month/season. Bearing this in mind, mayhap some good gentles shall be inspired to create works with a fall or winter theme to submit in coming months?

All submissions to the newsletter must be accompanied by a signed release form if I do not already have one on file. Please review the following information from sca.org. If you have any questions or need assistance, I will be glad to help!

Thank you to everyone for your continued support!

In Honoured Service, HL Jessimond of Emerickeskepe

SCA Printed Newsletters: Release Forms FAQs

From: https://www.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/ReleaseFormsFAQsPRINT.pdf

Who needs to use the release forms? Every official local and kingdom SCA printed newsletter. Can you explain each release form and when I need to use them? The SCA Creative Work Copyright Assignment/Grant of Use Form is needed from the author or artist for • articles, poems, stories, songs, etc. • original artwork (not clip art) No form is needed for • correspondence from officers or autocrats • event notices • captions The SCA Model Release Form is needed from the person(s) in the picture if • an individual’s facial features are identifiable (not obscured by helmets, garb or shadowing) in the photograph The SCA Photograph Grant of Use Form is needed from the photographer for all photos. (A photographer may check the “Perpetual Grants of Use” box, which means they can complete the form once and it covers any photograph submitted now or in the future.) Can we use the creative work form for permission to print personal information? No, this form cannot be used for “you are hereby given permission to print my personal information”. Within Society and kingdom policies, you can receive this information via e-mail, set-up a separate form, etc., but it cannot be added to this form. If you are looking for a sample form, the Kingdom of Caid’s is available at

http://webwright.sca-caid.org/docs/Personal%20Info%20Release.pdf

What if the author will only allow the creative work to be published within a certain time frame? If the contributor wants to add an “expiration date” or other restrictions (i.e. “you can publish this once before January 1, 2015”) he/she can do so, but no other statements can be added to the form. Do I need the photographer’s permission to modify a photograph? Not necessarily. Most photographers expect that some level of cropping or color adjustment may occur, but if you are editing photos significantly, please confirm with the photographer that the finished image is okay to publish as modified. Why can websites and electronic newsletters have “news” pictures without using the model release forms and traditional newsletters can’t? Once something is printed and distributed, it is very difficult to unpublish it, plus the majority of printed newsletters and publications have a subscription cost or purchase price associated with them, which means some may argue that the purpose of the photos is commercial.

8 | P a g e

Can we put the forms in roster format? While you can certainly have release forms available at events, they cannot be modified in any way including into the format of a roster. It is the individual member’s choice to sign or not and cannot be presented as an attendance requirement at an event. Can we modify the forms to cover specific dates? The forms cannot be modified in any way with the exception of adding the publication and/or website name. Can “permission to publish my image” be added to the blue cards? No, agreeing for your image to be published is in no way a requirement to be a member. Why are you allowing digital signatures? As there is a large need for the required forms from so many members, the 11 months of development time also addressed ways to make them the simplest, the most straight-forward and the easiest to complete, and that included digital signatures. There does need to be a traditional or a digital signature on the signature line — just completing the form is not enough. Are the digital signatures legal? Yes. The Adobe e-signature format we are using for obtaining signatures on the various releases and assignments is acceptable. Since the passage of E-SIGN, in 2001, and the European Union’s EU Directive for Electronic Signatures the year prior, electronic signatures on contracts are to be given the same status as traditional written signatures on contracts. The Adobe digital signature is one kind of electronic signature. Electronic signatures supported by public key infrastructures are generally considered “digital signatures”. US and State laws do not dictate a particular technology solution for digital signatures, and in this case for what we are doing, it is acceptable.

What is meant by “public place”? From USLegal.com: “A public place is generally an indoor or outdoor area, whether privately or publicly owned, to which the public have access by right or by invitation, expressed or implied, whether by payment of money or not, but not a place when used exclusively by one or more individuals for a private gathering or other personal purpose.” In other words, the majority of SCA events and functions are held in public places, but there are exceptions: a household meeting held at someone’s home, for example, would be considered a non-public venue, and in order to publish images from that meeting on an SCA-hosted website, Model Release forms would be required.

What does the statement “except where prohibited by local law” refer to? This is intended for privacy and photography laws in countries other than the US. For your convenience, here are the links to the fillable .pdf release forms:

August 1 – Lughnasadh – Lammas August 10 – Feast of St. Lawrence August 15 – Feast of Assumption of the Virgin Mary August 24 – Feast of St. Bartholomew August 29 – Feast of Beheading of St. John the Baptist

August is the 8th month of the year and has 31 days. It is the third and last month of summer (northern hemisphere). Originally named Sextilis in since it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar. The name of the month was changed to August in honor of Emperor Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE.

In medieval Europe, late July was the time for harvesting wheat while August was the time for threshing. The month names, originally introduced by , varied by region and dialect. For instance, August was known as the harvest moon/month; Aran-mānod in Old High German and Erntemonat in Middle High German. "Harvest", the noun, comes from the word hærf-est (coined before the Angles moved from Anglia to Great Britain) *and means "autumn" (the season), or "harvest-time". Significant Happenings:

August 5, 1305 - William Wallace, leader of the Scottish resistance, is captured by the English near Glasgow and transported to London for his trial August 9, 1173 - Tower of Pisa construction begins; it takes two centuries to complete August 13, 1521 - Spanish defeat the Aztec Indians and conquerors Mexico City marking the Fall of the Aztec Empire August 18, 1227 – Death of Genghis Khan, he was about 65 years old at the time August 22, 565 – St. Columba sees a monster in Loch Ness, the first recorded sighting August 23, 1456 - The Gutenberg Bible is finished printing August 25, 1530 – Birthday of Ivan the Terrible, the first Tsar of Russia August 27, 1576 – Titian, (aka- Tiziano Vecelli), Italian painter, dies of plague * Proceedings of the Philological Society, vol. 5, p. 207.

Summer’s Last Will and Testament (Excerpt) by Thomas Nashe; Published c. 1600

(Possibly written in Autumn 1592, while the plague was raging)

What pleasure always lasts? no joy endures. Summer I was. I am not what I was; Harvest and age have whitened my green head; On Autumn now and Winter must I lean; Needs must he fall whom none but foes uphold. Thus must the happiest man have his black day; Omnibus una manet nox, & calcanda semel via lethi.*

This month have I lain languishing abed, Looking each hour to yield my life and throne, And died I had indeed unto the earth But that Eliza, England’s beauteous Queen, On whom all seasons prosperously attend, Forbade the execution of my fate Until her joyful progress was expired.

For her doth Summer live, and linger here, And wisheth long to live to her content, But wishes are not had when they wish well, I must depart, my death-day is set down, To these two must I leave my wheaten crown. So unto unthrifts rich men leave their lands, Who in an hour consume long labour’s gains.

True is it that divinest Sidney sung, O, he is marred, that is for others made. Come near, my friends, for I am near my end; In presence of this honourable train, Who love me (for I patronize their sports), Mean I to make my final testament,

But first I’ll call my officers to ‘count, And of the wealth I gave them to dispose, Known what is left, I may know what to give. Vertumnus then, that turn’st the year about, Summon them one by one to answer me; First Ver, the spring, unto whose custody I have committed more than to the rest:

The choice of all my fragrant meads and flowers, And what delights soe’er nature affords.

* "But one night waits for all, and the road of death is to be tread only once." Vertumnus is the Roman god of metamorphoses in nature and in life. http://www.oxford-shakespeare.com/Nashe/Summers_Last_Will_Testament.pdf https://sourcetext.com/thomas-nashes-summers -last-will-and-testament/

Cucurbits Many of today’s most important crops, such as watermelon, honey melon, cucumber, squash, zucchini, and pumpkin, all belong to the family Cucurbitaceae. Alternately known as the cucumber family, cucurbits, gourd family, or squash family. Most wild cucurbit fruits are bitter and nonpalatable to humans. Those with non-bitterness to their pulp were apparently favored during early domestication of both Cucumbers (C. sativus) and Sweet Melons (C. melo). When growing modern cucumbers, it is important to know that most still have a potential to become bitter if left on the vine too long.

Cucumbers, which are among the most important Cucurbitaceae crops, originated in Asia. They are believed to have been domesticated from wild Indian C. sativus var. hardwickii which has small, bitter‐tasting or sour fruit. Research indicates that the East Asian C. sativus cultivars diverged from the Indian cultivars approximately 2500 years ago. There are three main cultivar groups of cucumber that were slowly selected for distinct purposes; Eurasian cucumbers (slicing cucumbers eaten raw and immature), East Asian cucumbers (pickling cucumbers) and Xishuangbanna cucumbers.

Perhaps the most famous example of cucumbers is attributed to Pliny the Elder who stated that Emperor Tiberius (14 – 16 AD) demanded to eat cucumis every day of the year. During summer special gardens were tended just for his vegetables, and in winter it was grown on moveable bed frames that were relocated to be exposed to the sun or illuminated with the mirror-stones in proto-greenhouses known as specularia. However, it is now believed that this has been a perpetuated mistranslation and that instead of cucumber (C. sativus) the Emperor most likely enjoyed eating Snake Melon (C. melo). In the 9th century Charlemagne included cucumeres, pepones, and cucurbitas in his Capitulare de Villis. The translation of these is generally accepted to be cucumbers, large melons, and gourds – all cucurbits! Italian and French manuscripts having accurate, informative images of both cucumbers and melons were produced between 1300 and 1458 CE.

APICIUS – Cookery and Dining in Imperial Rome; A Bibliography, Critical Review and Translation of the Ancient Book known as Apicius de re Coquinaria. Translated into English by Joseph Dommers Vehling https://www.gutenberg.org/files/29728/29728-h/29728-h.htm Curcurbits from the garden We have an abundance of cucumeres (C. here at Emerickeskepe sativus) here at Emerickeskepe this year. For the first time we are growing round, yellow, heirloom cucurbits called “Lemon Cucumbers”, in addition to the cylindrical green cucumbers most of us are familiar with. One of my favorite ways to enjoy cucumber is Gurkensalat. This is simply my Oma’s recipe, and not in any way reflective of an historic redaction. This is a good recipe to assemble the night before and then pack in the ice chest in the morning before heading to an event! I have also made it on-site while camping.

NOTE: This recipe is easily increased. I generally estimate about half a cucumber per serving then I just adjust the ingredients for the dressing. Plan ahead as you will need time to set the salad aside for either a few hours, or overnight!

15 | P a g e

Gurkensalat (German Cucumber Salad)

SALAD Ingredients: 2-3 large Cucumbers (Peel if they have thick skin or were waxed!) 1 medium Onion (can be any kind, but I prefer sweet) Salt

DRESSING Ingredients: ¼ C Half and Half 3 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar Garden fresh ingredients! 1 Tbsp Sugar (or sweetener of choice) 2 tsp dried Dill Weed (less if using fresh!) Salt and Pepper (to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare the salad: Slice the ends off the cucumbers, and score* them. Slice the scored cucumbers thinly (less than 1/4" thick – use a mandolin if you have one). Thinly slice the onion. Cut onion slices so that the finished pieces will be similar to the cucumber when eaten.

In a glass bowl, mix the sliced cucumbers and onions. Sprinkle with approx. 1/4 tsp salt per cucumber until slices are coated. Cover and set aside. Let sit at room temp 2-3 hours or in the fridge overnight.

Prepare the dressing: Mix the milk, vinegar, and sugar together, stirring until slightly thickened. Chill 30 -60 minutes minimum. I often will make the dressing the night before, as well as the salad, and simply store it in a lidded canning jar in the fridge.

NOTE: If taking the salad and dressing with me to an event or potluck, I do not assemble it until about an hour before serving. Just remember to bring the dill, pepper mill, and slotted serving spoon with you!

Assemble the salad: Drain the liquid from the salad. At home, I find it easy to just dump the cucumbers and onions into a colander in the sink and leave it to drain for a few minutes. I then put the cucumber and onion back into the same glass bowl they had been in OR I pull out a decorative bowl if expecting guests.

Pour the chilled dressing over the cucumbers and onions and gently toss. Taste a slice of the cucumber and season with salt and pepper as desired. Often, I just add fresh

16 | P a g e

cracked pepper at this point as the salad has already been salted. Sprinkle dill weed on top, cover, and refrigerate (or place back into the ice chest) for about an hour.

Serve using a slotted spoon. Traditionally, Gurkensalat can be served at room temperature, but here in Ansteorra I prefer it chilled. If it is going to be sitting out for a while, nestle the glass salad bowl into a large, metal bowl that has a little ice in it. A small towel under the metal bowl catches condensation.

NOTE: You want a dressing that is a little bit sour and with the consistency of thin cream. You can substitute any milk product for the half and half. You may also use lemon juice in place of the vinegar. If you have a little bit of Sour Cream, use that but omit the vinegar/lemon juice. If you have fresh Dill available, use it, but always use less of the fresh when a recipe calls for dried herbs.

*Scoring a cucumber: Use a fork to score the length of the cucumber(s) all around prior to slicing. This helps remove bitterness and creates a festive look to the cucumber! Always peel cucumbers that have been waxed. If not waxed, and the skin isn’t too thick, leave the skin on and just score through the skin.

Scoring cucumbers helps remove bitterness while giving a decorative edge to the slices!

Lemon Cucumbers I chose not to score these. Because of their size and shape, I cut the slices into quarters.

17 | P a g e

Here are the mixed cucumber slices before the onions were added. (Left)

This is what the cucumber and onions look like the next day, when I put them in the colander to drain. (Right)

The salt makes the cucumbers throw off a lot of their liquid! This also help to remove bitterness. I measured what I drained off this batch and it was 6 oz!

Dressed Gurkensalat with dill sprinkled on top. Ready to stir and serve!

A Kernel of Truth

Some might find themselves a bit perplexed when they read the word “corn” in early medieval sources or recipes. Here in the US the word corn is almost exclusively used to refer to our New World food that should properly be called maize (Zea Mays). The word maize came to English from the Spanish maiz and is a barely altered version of the Taíno (the language native to Hispaniola, the island of Haiti and the Dominican Republic) word for the plant, mahiz. Maize, alternately called “Indian Corn” or “Turkey Corn/Turkie Corne”, did not arrive in Europe until the late 15th century.

In Europe, the word “corn” has long referred to the dominant cereal grass grown in a specific region. For instance, in England it is wheat, while in Scotland and Ireland it is oats. In Sweden the word "korn" means barley, in Germany it means rye, while the Dutch grow spelt. So, while it is not wrong for us to call our primary cereal crop “corn” at all, we just need to realize that it is an old term that does not strictly refer to maize.

To the Shire of Rosenfeld, greetings!

* Did you know that Ansteorra has its very own Wiki with over 800 articles? (Have you ever visited Wikipedia? Well, it's like that, but just for Ansteorra!) * Did you know that YOU can have your very own page on the Wiki? Nearly 300 Ansteorrans already do! (Visit http://historian.ansteorra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Category:People to see just who has one.) * Did you know I would positively love the opportunity to assist you in either building a page on your own, or building one for you, complete with pictures, history, accomplishments, photos... whatever you want to share?

So much of the SCA is a shared, communal experience, but so much of our history is lost, because it is not recorded. There are so many stories to tell - and the Ansteorran Wiki is a beautiful place to share them and preserve them. Rosenfeld has a page on the wiki -- but only a tiny smidge of information about its rich history. (http://historian.ansteorra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Rosenfeld) Won't you share YOUR stories of Rosenfeld's history and events - large and small - with the rest of the Kingdom?

Contributing content to the wiki is much, much easier than you think. If you can type an email, you can contribute to the wiki. Content you could share can be as varied as snippets of information about those living or passed who have inspired you, "No (bleep), there I was!" stories, photographs, songs, poems... nearly anything you can imagine! Having your own page built on the wiki is as easy as filling out an online form (http://historian.ansteorra.org/submission.php ) and attaching a few photos (though please take a moment to ensure they are less than 1 MG in size first, or they won’t attach properly).

I invite you to contact me at [email protected] with any questions you might have about submitting information to the wiki – or how to set up your own user account and perhaps even build your first wiki page. Tell us your stories, Rosenfeld; we are waiting to hear them!! IMPORTANT UPDATE: Thanks to the thoughtful suggestions of Master Rene Damours, Ansteorra’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, and the labors of Ansteorra’s Webminister, Lord John Buchanan, the Persona Page Submission form now has a spot for individuals to provide Special Needs information -- mobility restrictions, allergies, In-Case-Of-Court instructions, etc. We also have a spot to provide information on your preferred pronouns. If you already have a wiki page and would like to add either pronouns or Special Needs information, please fill out the first three fields on the online form, and then only fill in the additional sections you'd like added.
