Dossier of Chemical Use on Scottish Salmon Farms (2008-2011) Based on data obtained from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency via Freedom of Information in July 2012 (available in full online here and read SEPA's data re-use statement online here ). More details online via FishyLeaks Summary: Total chemical use (Cypermethrin, Azamethiphos, Teflubenzuron, Emamectin benzoate & Deltamethrin) on Scottish salmon farms increased by 110% between 2008 and 2011 2008: 188076.07g 2009: 342847.8462g 2010: 373757.8495g 2011: 394630.5414g The alarming rise in chemical use is five times more than the percentage increase in salmon farming production: whilst Scottish farmed salmon production steadily increased by 22% between 2008 and 2011 (up from 128,606 tonnes to 157,385 tonnes) the use of toxic chemicals increased by a shocking 110% (up from 188076.07g to 394630.5414g). In terms of total chemical use (2008-2011), Azamethiphos accounts for over half (55%) with Emamectin benzoate (19%), Teflubenzuron (18%), Deltamethrin (5%) and Cypermethrin (3%). The relative composition of chemical use has changed since 2008 – but the use of Azamethiphos has always remained the largest component. As Cypermethrin use has declined the use of Teflubenzuron has increased to be the 2nd largest in 2011: Almost twice every day for the last four years (2008 to 2011), toxic chemicals were used on salmon farms across Scotland. Shetland Islands extend 157 km from the northernmost Out Stack Isle to the southernmost Fair Isle. The Islands are 300 km to the west coast of Norway in its east, 291 km to the Faroe Islands in its northwest and 43 km to the North Ronaldsay in its southwest[1–2]. The Main- land is the main island in the Shetland Islands, and 168 km to the Scotland in its south. The Shetland Islands are consisted of 1,018 islands and islets, in which the area of each island or islet is more than 6 m2. The total area of the Shetland Islands is 1,491.33 km2, and the coastline is 2,060.13 km long[1]. There are only 23 islands with each area more than 1 km2 in the Shetland Islands (Table 1), account- ing for 2% of the total number of islands and 98.67% of the total area of the islands. -

This deployment was carried out using an Aanderaa RDCP600 mounted in a weighted seabed frame. Analyses were carried out in accordance with SEPA guidelines ( Regulation and monitoring of marine cage fish farming in Scotland - a procedures manual. Attachment VIII Site and Hydrographic Survey Requirements. Version 2.7, 31st October 2008). 2 SITE DESCRIPTION The hydrographic survey site is located on the east coast of the Isle of Gigha, Argyll, in the vicinity of the existing Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) East Tarbert Bay farm site. There were 12 cages on-site at the time of survey. In addition, the existing SSC Druimyeon Bay cage site lies around 1.2km to the south of the deployment position. -

It reviews the islands’ history, archaeology and current management and visitor issues, and makes recommendations. Recommendations include ¾ Improved co-ordination and communication between the islands ¾ An organisational framework and a resident project officer ¾ Policies – research, establishing baseline information, assessment of significance, promotion and protection ¾ Audience development work ¾ Specific projects - a website; a guidebook; waymarked trails suitable for different interests and abilities; a combined museum and archive; and a pioneering GPS based interpretation system ¾ Enhanced use of Gaelic Initial proposals for implementation are included, and Access and Audience Development Plans are attached as appendices. The next stage will be to agree and implement follow-up projects Vision The vision for the archaeology of the Small Isles is of a valued resource providing sustainable and growing benefits to community cohesion, identity, education, and the economy, while avoiding unnecessary damage to the archaeological resource itself or other conservation interests. Acknowledgements The idea of a Development Plan for Archaeology arose from a meeting of the Isle of Eigg Historical Society in 2004. Its development was funded and supported by the Highland Council, Lochaber Enterprise, Historic Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, and the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, and much help was also received from individual islanders and others. -

CITATION NESS OF CULLIVOE SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST Shetland Islands Site code: 1217 NATIONAL GRID REFERENCE: HP552024 OS 1:50,000 SHEET NO: Landranger Series 1 1:25,000 SHEET NO: Explorer Series 470 AREA: 11.07 hectares NOTIFIED NATURAL FEATURES Geological: Structural and metamorphic geology: Moine DESCRIPTION: The Ness of Cullivoe is a small peninsula which projects into Bluemull Sound from the north east of the island of Yell. Most of Yell is composed of rocks which are believed to be related to rocks in northern Scotland known as the Moine. Underlying these are ancient rocks similar to the Lewisian gneiss found in the Western Isles and along the north west coast of Scotland, whilst to the east the rocks forming the western sides of Unst and Fetlar are younger and are correlated with the Dalradian rocks of the southern Highlands of Scotland. All three groups are metamorphic rocks, i.e. rocks which have been altered by intense heat and pressure. The Ness of Cullivoe lies within a geological unit known as the Hascosay Slide - a zone of intensely deformed and sheared rocks, up to a kilometre wide, which marks the boundary between the Moine rocks of Yell and the Dalradian rocks to the east. The Hascosay Slide Zone mainly comprises fine grained, banded blastomylonite; a type of rock produced by intense shearing under very high temperature conditions deep in the Earth’s crust. Caught up within these fine grained rocks are large bodies of coarse grained Lewisian gneiss. The rocks of the Hascosay slide provide important evidence about the geological evolution of Shetland and the formation, around 430 million years ago, of the Caledonian Mountain Belt of Britain and Scandinavia.
