Beth Henley's World Premiere the Jacksonianopens at The BETH HENLEY’S WORLD PREMIERE THE JACKSONIAN OPENS AT THE GEFFEN Cast Features Ed Harris, Glenne Headly, Amy Madigan, Bill Pullman and Bess Rous Helmed by Tony Award Winner Robert Falls Opens February 15, 2012 LOS ANGELES, February 14, 2012 — The world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley’s darkly humorous The Jacksonian begins in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse with an acclaimed cast. Helmed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls, The Jacksonian features four-time Oscar nominee and Broadway vet Ed Harris who appeared at the Geffen Playhouse in Wrecks; Glenne Headly, most recognizable for her big-screen role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and seen at the Geffen Playhouse in the live radio reading of It’s a Wonderful Life; Amy Madigan from Broadway’s Streetcar Named Desire and Oscar nominee for Twice in a Lifetime; Bill Pullman, most recently seen on Broadway in Oleanna and on-screen in HBO’s Too Big to Fail; and young stage and screen actress Bess Rous. Henley’s eerie offering transports us to a seedy motel in Jackson, Mississippi circa 1964. You go to The Jacksonian Cottages to bury your secrets, making the motel an unsettling world where the subversive becomes commonplace and the passage of time becomes hauntingly unpredictable. Revolving around the night of a murder, The Jacksonian is a surreal trip that is rife with disturbingly dark humor. As this salacious tale’s mysterious events unfold, both characters and audience find themselves on a road that ultimately leads to a dead end. Opening night festivities will be held at Napa Valley Grille in Westwood Village. The evening will feature culinary delights provided by Napa Valley Grille as well as a unique The Jacksonian themed cake designed by Montage Beverly Hills pastry chef Richard Ruskell, Malibu Family Wines, Eternal Water and specialty beverages by Krol Vodka. The Geffen Playhouse production, which was recently extended a week through March 25, marks the world premiere of this play. Special events during the run of The Jacksonian include Talk Back Tuesdays: four evenings of intellectual and thought provoking post-performance discussions. Biographies ED HARRIS (Bill Perch) Ed Harris previously appeared at the Geffen Playhouse in 2009 as Edward Carr in Neil LaBute’s Wrecks (LADCC Award for Best Solo Performance), a role he originated at the Everyman Palace Theatre in Ireland as well as reprised for the New York run in 2006. Harris’ theater credits include: Taking Sides, Fool for Love (Obie Award - Outstanding Actor), Precious Sons (Drama Desk Award - Outstanding Actor), Prairie Avenue (LADCC Award),Scar, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Grapes of Wrath, Sweet Bird of Youth, and Simpatico (Lucille Lortel Award - Best Actor). On screen, Harris, who will next be seen in the feature thriller, Man on a Ledge and in HBO’s Game Change, has appeared in over fifty films and been nominated for four Academy Awards. He has been honored with a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and a National Society of Film Critics Award for his work in films. His movie work includes blockbuster comedies (Ruthless People, Spaceballs), dramas (The Accidental Tourist, Igby Goes Down), romantic comedies (Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping), action (Independence Day), thrillers (Malice), westerns (The Virginian, Wyatt Earp), film noir (The Last Seduction, The Zero Effect), and horror (The Grudge). His theater work includes the Broadway revival of David Mamet’s Oleanna, the Broadway world premiere of Edward Albee’s The Goat (Drama Desk nomination), as well as Albee’s Peter & Jerry (Drama Desk nomination). Bill directed for the anthology TV series Night Visions, and directed and produced the TNT movie The Virginian. He recently starred in HBO’s Too Big To Fail and just wrapped production on the BBC and Starz series Torchwood. Bill received a BA from the State University College at Oneonta, and an MFA in Theater Directing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He taught in the Theater Department at Montana State University in Bozeman for two years before heading to New York. Current directing projects include Three Hotels for the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Midwest premiere of John Logan’s Tony Award-winning Red for the Goodman. BETH HENLEY (Playwright) Beth Henley was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Her plays have been produced internationally and translated into over ten languages. Crimes of the Heart and The Wake of Jamey Foster were performed on Broadway. Off-Broadway productions include: The Miss Firecracker Contest, Am I Blue, The Lucky Spot, The Debutante Ball, , Abundance, Impossible Marriage, and Family Week. Her play Ridiculous Fraud was produced at McCarter Theatre as well as South Coast Repertory Theatre. Beth Henley was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play for Crimes of the Heart. I very much appreciate southern writers, female southern writers in particular. Perhaps Henley is over my head and I just don't get it.     Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. " Tapping my toe, just tapping my toe" she sings, to the tune of "Singin' in the Rain," before a crowd of kindergarteners at a downtown elementary school in Atlanta. "What a glorious feeling, I'm — nodding my head!" The kids gleefully tap their toes and nod themselves silly as they sing along. "Give yourselves a standing O!" Ms. Edson cries, when the song ends. Her charges scramble to their feet and clap their hands, sending their arms arcing overhead in a giant "O." This willowy 37-year-old woman with tousled brown hair and a big grin couldn't seem more different from Dr. Vivian Bearing, the brilliant, emotionally remote English professor who is the heroine of her play WIT — which has won such unanimous critical acclaim in its small Off- Broadway production. Vivian is a 50-year-old scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donne's "Holy Sonnets." When we meet her, she is dying of very placement of a comma crystallizing mysteries of life and death for ovarian cancer. Bald from chemotherapy, she makes her entrance clad Vivian and her audience. For this feat, one critic demanded that Ms. Edson in a hospital gown, dragging an IV pole.

    CAST BIOGRAPHIES MICHAEL SHANNON (Gary Noesner) Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and Tony Award® nominated actor Michael Shannon continues to make his mark in entertainment, working with the industry's most respected talent and treading the boards in notable theaters around the world. Shannon will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, a love story set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America. The film co-stars Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer. Fox Searchlight will release the film December 2017. In 2018, Shannon will return to Red Orchard Theatre for its 25th Anniversary to direct the world premiere of Traitor, Brett Neveu's adaption of Henrik Ibsen's Enemy of the People. Traitor will include ensemble members Dado, Larry Grimm, Danny McCarthy, Guy Van Swearingen and Natalie West and will run from January 5, 2018 through February 25, 2018. Back on the big screen, Shannon will then be seen in the Nicolai Fuglsig’s 12 Strong opposite Chris Hemsworth. The project follows a team of CIA agents and special forces who head into Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in an attempt to dismantle the Taliban. Warner Brothers is releaseing the film in January 2018. Later next year, Shannon will also be seen in writer-director Elizabeth Chomko’s drama, What They Had, opposite Hilary Swank. The story centers on a woman who must fly back to her hometown when her Alzheimer's-stricken mother wanders into a blizzard and the return home forces her to confront her past, which includes her brother (Shannon).
