Teaching & Learning Division Extended Spring Break Instructional Resources Instrumental Music Grade 9 – 12 - Orchestra Music First Lessons March 16-20 Getting Started with MusicFirst for Orchestra Students will be able to navigate the MusicFirst classroom and perform the following tasks: Post a written assignment; Record a simple greeting; Post in a discussion forum. Please complete these activities/assignments to get used to the MusicFirst Classroom and make sure your technology is working properly. If using a computer/chromebook, we recommend using an up-to-date version of the Chrome browser for best results. If you plan to use an iPad or iPhone, please download the free MusicFirst app. Everything will work better through the app, and it is necessary for recording activities. Please complete the 3 activities below. 1. Communicating With Your Teacher 2. Writing & Responding: My Favorite Kind of Music 3. Recording Audio: Record Your Name String Instruments in Popular Styles This lesson has two tasks: 1. Watch the video, "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," originally performed by Coldplay, video performed by 2Cellos. 2. Respond to the Questions, including investigating other videos and styles performed by 2Cellos. Response Question 1: After listening to the performance of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," by 2Cellos, describe at least two characteristics that make this performance unique or engaging to listen to. Response Question 2: The background of these musicians is interesting. Both Sulic and Hauser have played the cello since childhood. Sulic graduated from the acclaimed Royal Academy of Music in London, and Hauser from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, both in 2011. They met performing at classically styled performance competitions. Review their website (click on the link provided), and write about which styles they perform which you listen to on your own listening time outside of school. Teaching & Learning Division Extended Spring Break Instructional Resources March 23-27 Fingering Review & Quiz #1 Take some time to review the fingering charts for YOUR respective instrument (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass). You will find these under “Class Files” on the Class Overview page. Then take the quiz called Violin/Viola/Cello/Bass Fingering Quiz 1 (again, only for YOUR instrument!) underneath Class Overview. You will have 15 minutes to select the correct fingering for each note. General Instrument Care with Temperature & Humidity There are two procedures in this lesson. 1. Watch the video, making note of important ways to take care of your instrument, especially in regards to temperature and humidity. 2. Complete the writing activity. - Watching the video carefully and naming four procedures you can use to care for your instrument, and why they are important. Extension: Students may also complete Treble/Alto/Bass Note Reading Level 1: • Your child will click on their respective clef exercise underneath “Class Overview” • He/she will follow the directions below: o Please follow the link to complete 25 note identifications by clicking here. You may reset your score as often as you like. When finished, upload a screenshot of your results. Mac is Command + Shift 4. PC is print screen.
