BLACK RECONSTRUCTION AN ESSAY TOWARD A HISTORY OF THE PART WHICH BLACK FOLK PLAYED IN THE ATTEMPT TO RECONSTRUCT DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, 1860-1880 BY W. E. Burghardt Du Bois PROFESSOROF SOCIOLOGY IN THE ATLANTA UNIVERSITY HARCOURT, BRACE AND COMPANY NEW YORK XVI. BACK TOWARD SLAVERY How civil war in the South began again—indeed had never ceased; and how black Prometheus bound to the Rock of Ages by hate, hurt and humiliation, has his vitals eaten out as they grow, yet lives and fights It must be remembered and never forgotten that the civil war in the South which overthrew Reconstruction was a determined effort to reduce black labor as nearly as possible to a condition of unlimited exploitation and build a new class of capitalists on this foundation. The wage of the Negro worker, despite the war amendments, was to be reduced to the level of bare subsistence by taxation, peonage, caste, and every method of discrimination. This program had to be carried out in open defiance of the clear letter of the law. The lawlessness in the South since the Civil War has varied in its phases. First, it was that kind of disregard for law which follows all war. Then it became a labor war, an attempt on the part of impov- erished capitalists and landholders to force laborers to work on the capitalist's own terms. From this, it changed to a war between labor- ers, white and black men fighting for the same jobs. Afterward, the white laborer joined the white landholder and capitalist and beat the black laborer into subjection through secret organizations and the rise of a new doctrine of race hatred.

  • “Simply a Theist”: Herndon on Lincoln's Religion
“Simply a Theist”: Herndon on Lincoln’s Religion RICHARD Carwardine On the evening of Friday, December 12, 1873, William Herndon rose to address a public meeting at the courthouse in Springfield. Un- daunted by the bad weather, the people of the Illinois state capital had turned out in good numbers, enticed by the speaker’s reputation and his advertised subject: Lincoln’s religion. Expecting a forthright lecture from Lincoln’s former associate, Herndon’s hearers were not disappointed, for he did not mince his words as he sought to show that his sometime law partner had lived and died “an unbeliever.” “Mr. Lincoln,” he declared, “was simply a Theist—an unbeliever in Christianity.” The president had died as he had lived: “an infidel . in the orthodox sense of the term.” It was “twaddle” to argue that he had ever been a Christian. Those hero-worshipping biographers who had turned him into a declared follower of Christ had indulged in self-deluding romantic fiction. Herndon’s propositions and the trenchancy with which he advanced them threw Springfield into a fever of excitement. Spread countrywide as a broadside, and in the newspaper press, Lincoln’s Religion drew down onto Herndon’s head a storm of obloquy. His black treachery, snorted the New York Herald, revealed “the heart of Judas beating beneath an exterior of friendship.”1 It was not the first time Herndon had put this case before the public. What was new was his appetite to do it in person, before a hometown audience, with a fanfare, and without concessions to the finer feelings of Christian churchgoers.

Regardless of the birthmark itself which represents the Original Sin, a conflict between masculine attitude and feminine perspective toward perfection and beauty is artfully manifested in this story. The paper study employs the notions of the beautiful and the sublime according to Immanuel Kant’s Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime in which he puts forward the idea that different sexes possess different perceptions of events and environment. From his viewpoint, women are mostly capable to feel the beautiful and sympathy, while men, with their tendency to perfection, possess and convey the feeling of the sublime. Several events, disputes and descriptions in ‘The Birthmark’, clearly exemplify women’s zeal for beauty and men’s seeking the perfection.

  • The Pleasures of Friendship
PREFACE. IN submitting the following pages to the notice of the public, the Author experiences a delicacy of sentiment, that words must fall far short of expressing; being aware, that in so doing, she exposes herself to criticism, and probably to reprehension. She attempts not to pronounce her Work free from error; on the contrary, she feels persuaded that the first attempt of a young and inexperienced female, must be a source from whence the scrutinous reader may draw ample food for critical remark. Should, however, her feeble efforts be deemed worthy the public regard, she trusts it will be found, that whilst endeavouring to engage and entertain the youthful mind, she has not neglected to enforce the precepts of Religion and Morality. If by such an union she eventually succeeds in the attainment of so great an object, her exertions will be amply repaid in the happiness of knowing that her time has not been vainly or unprofitably employed. THE PLEASURES OF FRIENDSHIP. DURING the summer of 1800, I was prevailed on by the entreaties of my family, to commence a tour through Scotland and Wales. On approaching the town of Caermarthen, I was particularly struck with the picturesque situation of an elegant mansion. I expressed my admiration to Mrs. B. who had formerly resided in the neighbourhood; and who informed me that it was Llyndridge. “ What!” exclaimed all my little family in a breath, “ Llyndridge, the residence of your amiable friends Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Mansfield?” “ The same, my loves; in that pretty cottage, situated at a short distance from the house, they resided many years.” “ I wish, dear mamma,” said Augusta, the eldest of Mrs.

  • Novel Feelings: Emotion, Duration, and the Form of the Eighteenth-Century British Novel
Novel Feelings: Emotion, Duration, and the Form of the Eighteenth-Century British Novel Candace Gail Cunard Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Candace Gail Cunard All rights reserved ABSTRACT Novel Feelings: Emotion, Duration, and the Form of the Eighteenth-Century British Novel Candace Gail Cunard One of the first features of the eighteenth-century novel to strike the modern reader is its sheer length, and yet critics have argued that these novels prioritize emotional experiences that are essentially fleeting. “Novel Feelings” corrects this imbalance by attending to ongoing emotional experiences like suspense, familiarization, frustration, and hope—both as they are represented in novels and as they characterize readerly response to novels. In so doing, I demonstrate the centrality of such protracted emotional experiences to debates about the ethics of feeling in eighteenth-century Britain. Scholarship on the sentimental novel and the literature of sensibility tends to locates the ethical work of novel feeling in short, self-contained depictions of a character’s sympathetic response to another’s suffering. Such readings often rely on texts like Henry Mackenzie’s The Man of Feeling or Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey, short works composed out of even shorter, often disjointed scenes in which the focal characters encounter and respond emotionally to the distresses of others. And yet, these fragmentary productions which deliberately deemphasize narrative connection between scenes do not provide ideal models for approaching the complex large-scale plotting of many eighteenth-century novels.

And yet, disease itself is caused by misuse of thought: the intake of alien parasites by eating animal produce, or through medicines or injections, is the application of a wrong way of thought. In the case of a child being fed animal produce, the misuse of thought comes about within the parents or other people with power over the child, such as medical people, school authorities and suchlike. The sooner that it is widely recognised that each person is the cause of his own illness, the sooner that a wide-reaching cure for all ailments will come into effect. It is merely a matter of plain common sense, and in accordance with the most basic reasoning, that if a certain thing is causing an ailment, then that ailment cannot be cured without removing the cause.
