Sultry of face and tatted of arm, Paul Morrell ’s one of the industry’s most promising talents, both behind the decks and in the studio. He’s taken his urgent, sun-chasing sound to some of the world’s most iconic venues, from Islington to Ibiza.

Now he’s dived headlong back into the gay scene, with a new spot at cavernous bear’s den of hedonism XXL. Dylan Jones spoke with him about backstage glamour, sizzling island parties, and tall handsome men.

With its vine-strewn courtyard, amphora-scattered walkway, and tranquil but metropolitan atmosphere, The Yard is a rare and sought- after urban oasis of calm amongst Soho’s screeching sprawl. But, as with many good things these days, it seems we’re not allowed to enjoy it in peace. The Yard team have been fighting off developers over the last 18 months and, despite many rebuttals, they’re not letting up, determined to put a no-doubt soulless corporate stamp on The Yard’s gorgeously unique façade. The development, if built, would cause the loss of the balcony, remove the beautiful Victorian hipped roofs and cover the open air courtyard to enable flats to be built above. But they’ve got on last chance for preservation, and we can help them. In a final ditch effort for salvation, they’re attempting to get listed building status, and as part of that, they’re being evaluated by Historic England. It has an initiative called Pride of Place, which helps document places of LGBTQ heritage and historic importance across the UK. The key is to show that The Yard is an integral and historical part of our community. To do this, you can share your past experiences on the map, no matter how recent or old they are – special moments you had over a bottle of wine with friends, or even just fond memories of drunken Saturday nights. “Historic England’s decision is imminent so we need to act fast, any memories you have of The Yard are so vital!” says owner, Andy Jones “This is the last push to get the building listed and preserve it for future generations. “Historic England does not have access to the thousands of previous objections to Westminster City Council. Therefore, please make your voice heard by demonstrating the important role The Yard has played in the history of the LGBTQ community.” To do this, go to www.mapme.com/prideofplace, search for The Yard, and add your story.

You are hit immediately with the feel of community both from the customers and the very friendly staff. comedy” Serving at the bar is bubbly landlord John and lovely long- term bar lady Diane, although most of the guys are waiting to be served by sexy young barman Phil. This week cabaret is supplied by popular local act ‘Candy – Slag in Drag’ With a huge wig twice her own body weight, Candy stumbles straight from the smoking area through the crowd chatting to all the regulars on the way through. She arrives to the stage just in time to sing her opening number ‘Let Me Entertain You’ which she has changed the lyrics to in true Candy style. With patter so blue ‘it would make a whore blush’ Candy jumped from one taboo to another with her no-holds-barred comedy much to the delight of most of the queens. On to her rendition of ‘Lonely Goat Herd’ Candy reminisces about ‘double dropping’ ecstasy and taking acid all to the Sound of Music soundtrack. With more blue jokes about rimming, Candy manages to have us laughing at everything that we shouldn’t laugh at. Finally she reminds us that her picture was on the front of the Guardian for Pride before bursting into a naughty version of ‘The Winner Takes It All’ and it’s goodnight!

Words by Joel Ryder

One of Soho’s oldest and best-loved venues, the Yard is always packed full of city boys, cute twinks, super studs and their friends. The lovely Joel Ryder popped down this weekend to capture that fun. Don’t forget, the Yard still needs your help to stave off developers! The Yard is currently being evaluated by Historic England for listed building status. If it can gain this listed status, it is very unlikely that the developers will be able to get planning permission for a scheme that would destroy much of the building’s heritage and cause the loss of the open-air courtyard. This is our last chance to tell Historic England why The Yard is important and they need your help. Pride of Place is Historic England’s initiative to help map and document LGBTQ history and heritage across the country. They need you to add what love about The Yard, together with your personal experience no matter how recent or old these may be. Whether you have been going to The Yard since it opened in 1993 or are a new frequenter this is your last chance. Share your memorable experiences at Pride of Place!

Lanah P, known to many as Al Pillay, is what we describe here at QX as “A one”. She’s unforgettable. Unignorable. Unapologetic. She’s a whirling, turbulent durbish of smashed norms, gender-defying defiance, and underground London glamour!

She’s punk, she’s attention-grabbing, disruptive, and she formed a part of the cultural zeitgeist that has shaped our gay scene as we know it today. She’s done it all! She’s released music, been on telly, and she’s got everyone from the 80’s on speed dial!

Dylan Jones spoke with them about her contentious, impassioned and radical views on media, society and modern life.

Hey Lanah! How was your pridede this year? As a performer of some standing andd notorietnotoriety,y, I have pperformederformed at pridepride on a number of occasions. I think myy firstfirst pridepride was around 1984. BackBack then it was so much more politicized.. It was organic, it wasn’t off a Topshop rail. Being our authentic selves, we fought for all these queens to wear their crowns with pride today! If I’m in the West End I just pass through, but this year I got spotted a lot. Strangers were asking why I wasn’t playing the main stage in Trafalgar Square. Maybe it’s because I’m too alternative? OR is it because I’m the original no filter hashtag? I was liberated from the day I was born, and suffered the consequences. My life has always been a movie called GO FUCK YOURSELVES! STARRING ME! ´

You were one of the faces of Channel 4 back when it started up. What do you think of British media and TV at the moment? What you mean to ask the lovely Lanah, is that you acknowledge that I set a precedent and was a seminal star of C4’s groundbreaking “The Comicstrip Presents” with French and Saunders. Yes! Sorry! Seminal! You were a SEMINAL face of Channel 4! The channel’s FIRST! The first ever unapologetic genderqueer, loud and proud personality. And there hasn’t been seen since! Ha! They wrote a movie for me. And there was NOBODY else like me on the British screen or in cinema. It’s called EAT THE RICH (because if things don’t change that’s all that will be left to eat!). As for what I think of the media today…well I think it’s a cis white middle class domain. I’ve also noticed tokenism posing as diversity on television. Hence the reason I rarely watch TV these days. I prefer to read Spinoza and George Orwell instead. What do you think of how sexuality and gender is being portrayed in our society today? I’ve always maintained that the whole concept of gender is a scam! It doesn’t truly exist for any of us. It’s just an earthbound illusion. I come from the optic that we’re all spiritual entities, biological gender being only an objective fact. And sexual diamorphism doesn’t cover it either. For most of us, gender is an essentialist social construct and an existentialist truth. But for some of us, there is no truth in it. Everybody’s origins begin in androgyny. How do you think your gender was perceived when you first came into the public eye? In the 80s, as Stock, Aitken & Waterman’s premier mixed race brown skin HI-NRG diva with the smash “Pistol In My Pocket”, I electively lived a transsexual woman’s role. I soon figured that I was buying into a misogynistic patriarchal idea of what it wanted a woman to be. genuine alternative people. The road to becoming an established cabaret artist hasn’t been an easy one for Stephanie Von Clitz, but like a true pro her perseverance has paid off. This Saturday the Clitz celebrates five years as a drag artist with a night of song and laughter at Soho’s Admiral Duncan. I spoke to the man behind the Dorset tart with a heart, Steven Banks, this week...

None of that “LA (la la la la Love)”-whatever bullshit they ended up using on that Kardashian’s spinoff. I’m talking “London Bridge”/”Fergalicious” back. Absolute, unbridled INSANITY. The song is called “M.I.L.F.$” and it’s like listening to the musical equivalent of an asthma attack, like having an epileptic fit inside a Beatz Pill & like listening to a synthesizer and a vocoder fucking on crystal meth. But you won’t even care.

As with the “Fergalicious” video, Stacey Ferguson is selling by Dom Top edibles again. She’s gone from candy to dairy now, as she welcomes you to the “Dairy Dutchess’ Love Factory”. Said factory seems to house numerous supermodels, shirtless muscular masseurs, FergieFerg herself and (sigh) Kum Kardassian in a white wig. There’s also a diner, where everyone’s got neon weaves, a classroom full of hot high school boys looking to deliver a bukkake session to a black-haired schoolmarm Ferg and a Wisteria-Lane-esque neighbourhood that’s serviced by Jon Kortajarena in a milkman’s outfit.

It’s FUCKING. MAD. Fergie looks like a beautiful sexbot for most of it, which seems about right, considering most of her parts are synthetic by now. Ciara’s there too; body popping and being gorgeous. Devon Aoki’s wearing a bizarre hat and getting her baby out of a car. There’s women pole dancing in giant milkshakes, Fergie bathing in , Fergie pouring more milk over herself whilst wearing a latex MILF leotard… it’s basically the music video you have always wanted to make. DAME MÁS LECHE, PAPI.

The video even ends with Basque guapo Jon Kortajarena with his beautiful head in her lap, about to start nursing off FF’s juicy teats. Attagirl Stacey, as if we ever needed anymore proof that she’s basically a gay man, now we have her filling a hot Spaniard’s mouth full of her milk. We fucking love it.
