Maybe the 18-year-old isn’t old enough to feel pressure. Maybe she didn’t know she should. On the final rotation Saturday night -- the uneven bars -- Florida needed a 9.95 or better to win its third consecutive NCAA gymnastics title. All McMurtry did was execute her best routine of the season, earning a career-best 9.95 to propel the Gators a final score of 197.850 and the national championship. “I didn’t necessarily know what score I had to get,” McMurtey said. “I think that would have made it even harder for me so I knew I had a job to do and I knew my teammates had my back. Going last is sometimes a good position, sometimes a bad position, and we had five girls hit routines so I knew my teammates had my back and I just had to do my job. It all worked out for me and that was one of the best routines of my career.” “It’s amazing that she came out under this heavy pressure situation as a freshman and performed as well as she did everywhere,” Florida head coach Rhonda Faehn said.“To anchor that bar lineup, to have that fight for every little thing, it’s not only amazing, it speaks volumes for what she will continue to bring to this team in the future, which is exciting.” Faehn had her back to the scoreboard and paid no attention to the other teams competing.

However, Williams has established OU as the nation’s elite program with five national titles in the last seven years, claiming crowns in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and most recently in 2008. The Sooners have also enjoyed international success with Williams at the helm as he helped train two Olympic medal winners. Jonathan Horton (Beijing 2008) and Guard Young (Athens 2004) represented the U.S. in the last two Olympic Games. Williams was named the head coach at Oklahoma in 2000 and has positioned the program SOONERS UNDER WILLIAMS as a national contender every year with an overall mark of 223-18 (.925) in nine seasons. In addition to the five national titles, the Sooners have recorded three national runner-up Year Record Conference (Finish) Postseason (Finish) finishes under Williams and other gaudy numbers that includes 14 individual national 2000 15-4 MPSF (First) NCAA (Fourth) champions, 92 All-America honors, eight conference team championships, 29 individual 2001 24-2 MPSF (First) NCAA (Second) conference titles and two Nissen Emery Award winners (Jonathan Horton in 2008 and 2002 28-1 MPSF (First) NCAA (First) 2003 26-0 MPSF (First) NCAA (First) Daniel Furney in 2003), presented annually to the nation’s top senior gymnast.

    GYM UPDATE Photo courtesy of International Gymnast International of courtesy Photo 1980 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team will be recognized at ’10 Visa Championships USA Gymnastics will celebrate the accomplishments of the USA’s 1980 Olympic Gymnastics Team on Saturday, Aug. 14, as part of the final day of the 2010 Visa Championships in Hartford, Conn. Thirty years ago, the 1980 USGF International Invitational, the alternate Olympic competition for gymnastics, was held at the Hartford Civic Center, now known as the XL Center, after President Jimmy Carter decided the United States would boycott the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Soviet Union. The members of the women’s 1980 Olympic Team are: Luci Collins Cummings of Inglewood, Calif.; Marcia Frederick Blanchette of Assomet, Mass.; Kathy Johnson Clarke of Longwood, Fla.; Beth Kline Rybacki of Upland, Calif.; Amy Koopman Enxing of Village of Lakewood, Ill.; Julianne McNamara Zeile of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and Tracee Talavera Kent of Tallahassee, Fla. Ernestine Weaver was the head coach, and Paul Ziert was the assistant coach.     NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 4 Brackets 17 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Oklahoma Wins Second NCAA Title: The motto for the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics squad this year was to make it count. On Saturday night, the Sooners did just that. With a 197.6750, the No. 1-seeded Sooners secured the 2016 NCAA Championship inside Fort Worth Convention Center. The title was their second all-time, with the first coming in 2014. The Super Six appearance was OU’s sixth in the last seven seasons and in each of those, OU has now finished within the top three nationally. The victory made history in the gymnastics world as Oklahoma became the first school in history to win both the women’s and men’s national titles in the same season. Earlier on Saturday night, the men’s team rolled to the 2016 crown in Columbus, Ohio. “What do you say? One of girls this morning, when she woke up, tweeted, ‘It felt like Christmas Eve last night—I couldn’t go to bed anticipating today,’ It turns out that’s exactly what it was,” 10th-year Oklahoma head coach K.J. Kindler said. “Christmas Day is always a wonderful day when you’re a kid. Today was just an amazing and wonderful day for these ladies and our entire team. They had to fight for it.
