  • Panam Travel
Item No. 31 April 26, 2011 To: The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place ACTION REQUIRED From: Dianne Young, Chief Executive Officer Subject: Observer Program: Guadalajara 2011 Pan/Parapan American Games Summary: This report recommends that a representative of Exhibition Place’s Pan Am Project Team join the City’s TO2015 Observer Program to attend the 2011 Pan American Games (October 12th to 30th) taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico. Recommendations: It is recommended that the Board approve travel by Jeff Gay, Director of Event Management Services, to the 2011 Pan/Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, with the City’s TO2015 Observer Program in order for Exhibition Place to better assist with planning and preparing for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. Financial Impact: Increased tourism to Guadalajara for the 2011 Pan/Parapan American Games will cause increased demand for flights and hotel rooms and will cause costs to rise. For this reason it is expected that travel costs may be in excess of $3,500, but will not exceed $4,000, and that pre- approval from the Board will be required. Decision History: On Friday, November 6, 2009, it was announced that Toronto won in its bid to host the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. Further to the announcement, City departments, agencies and boards with a role in planning for the games have designated lead representatives to become members of the City’s interdivisional Pan Am Project Team. Dianne Young is Exhibition Places’ representative on the City’s Project Team. Issue Background: Exhibition Place has been selected as a major site for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games and it would be extremely useful if a member of the Exhibition Place staff could join the City Team as an Observer along with representatives of the Federal and Provincial governments.

  • Origins of Canadian Olympic Weightlifting
1 Page # June 30, 2011. ORIGINS OF CANADIAN OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING INTRODUCTION The author does not pretend to have written everything about the history of Olympic weightlifting in Canada since Canadian Weightlifting has only one weightlifting magazine to refer to and it is from the Province of Québec “Coup d’oeil sur l’Haltérophilie”, it is understandable that a great number of the articles are about the Quebecers. The researcher is ready to make any modification to this document when it is supported by facts of historical value to Canadian Weightlifting. (Ce document est aussi disponible en langue française) The early history of this sport is not well documented, but weightlifting is known to be of ancient origin. According to legend, Egyptian and Chinese athletes demonstrated their strength by lifting heavy objects nearly 5,000 years ago. During the era of the ancient Olympic Games a Greek athlete of the 6th century BC, Milo of Crotona, gained fame for feats of strength, including the act of lifting an ox onto his shoulders and carrying it the full length of the stadium at Olympia, a distance of more than 200 meters. For centuries, men have been interested in strength, while also seeking athletic perfection. Early strength competitions, where Greek athletes lifted bulls or where Swiss mountaineers shouldered and tossed huge boulders, gave little satisfaction to those individuals who wished to demonstrate their athletic ability. During the centuries that followed, the sport continued to be practiced in many parts of the world. Weightlifting in the early 1900s saw the development of odd-shaped dumbbells and kettle bells which required a great deal of skill to lift, but were not designed to enable the body’s muscles to be used efficiently.
