The purpose of Rosh Hashanah can be understood through the main themes of the central Mussaf prayer offered on that day. The prayer is organized in three sections. 1. Malchiot (Kingship): We begin the special silent prayer of Rosh Hashanah by declaring God our King. The prohibition of worshiping a foreign god is often understood to prohibit Jews from subscribing to idol worship, paganism, and the deities of other religions. Today, this prohibition may not seem relevant. The Talmud, however, explains that the commandment does not refer solely to idol worship, but also to giving credence to other negative influences. Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz, one of the great spiritual guides of the past century, further explains this concept. He suggests that harmful desires do not always present themselves to us as such. It is true, there are pleasures in life which we know are plainly wrong.

(Shemos 25:15–16) The holy Berditchever asked in Kedushas Levi: Why is there an extra warning against removing the staves from the Ark, unlike any other precaution regarding the holy vessels? To make the answer to this question clear, the Berditchever tells us that he must give a bit of a lengthy explanation. He says that it is well known that man is called an “olam katan,” a small world, and that he is a microcosm of the universe, and that his 248 limbs correspond spiritually to the 248 positive commandments, and that his 365 sinews correspond spiritually to the 365 negative commandments. Similarly, explains the Berditchever, the Mishkan and all of its vessels correspond to the spiritual forces behind the mitzvos, each vessel alluding to a different mitzvah. [For example: The Zohar II 152b-153b teaches that the Shulchan corresponds to the mitzvah of Birkas haMazon, just as the shulchan draws down blessings and sustenance to the whole world so does the grace after meals which we recite.] The Kedushas Levi reminds us that there are several mitzvos that man is obligated to always have in mind and remember constantly, at every moment.

When he was just 17 years old he published his first Chidushim and became known as the Illuy of Warsaw” He married Feigele Lipszyc, daughter of Moshe 'Halfon' Lipszyc, in 1811, and settled in Warsaw. They had fourteen children, most of whom died in infancy. First Gerrer Rebbe His mother Chaya Sarah, was an orphan who was raised by the Koznitzer Maggid. The Maggid therefore was a great influence on the Rebbe’s early development. Later, he was drawn to R’ Simcha Bunim of Pshischa, one of the prominent leaders of Chasidim in Poland. His students included the Kotzker Rebbe, Vurker Rebbe, Izhbitzer Rebbe, Alexander Rebbe and the Gerrer Rebbe. He famously taught: Everyone must have two pockets, with a note in each pocket, so that he or she can reach into the one or the other, depending on the need.

FOREWORD A recent New York Times article focused upon a struggle within the Orthodox Jewish community over the permissibility of mixed dancing in kosher dining facilities. Articles in other media have centered upon Orthodox "heresy-hunting" and initiatives to increase religious legislation in Israel, most notably efforts to amend the "Who is a Jew" clause in the Law of Return. Pervading these disputes has been the struggle between the Orthodox "right," often termed "haredi Orthodoxy," who seek to limit contact with the broader society, and the "Modern" or "Centrist Orthodox," who seek to establish parameters for fruitful and constructive engagement between Judaism and modem culture. Although media coverage of these dL'putes has been widespread, much misunderstanding and confusion prevail concerning these groups. Many assume that all haredim are anti-Zionist and emulate the AyatoIIah Khomeini in seeking to inspire compulsory religious legislation. Others have mL,interpreted the "Who is a Jew" debate in Israel as an effort to communicate to American Conservative and Reform Jews their lack of personal standing under Jewish religious law -- a rather sad commentary on how public signals from Israel affect the Jewish identity of American Jews.
