Savour the Southeast Returns and Chooses Funds Recipient SAVOUR THE SOUTHEAST RETURNS AND CHOOSES FUNDS RECIPIENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4, 2016 It is with great pleasure that we announce today the return of Savour the Southeast on May 13th 2017 at Affinity Place. Last year’s event was a great success and organizers are hoping to make the 2017 version even better than last year. This year’s recipients of the funds will be the Estevan Kinsmen and Kinnettes club. The funds will go toward the building of a multipurpose facility in the Kin Park located in the hillside subdivision. Organizations had the ability to complete the online application for funding from September 15th – October 15th. After reviewing the seven applications that were received the committee which consisted of Josh LeBlanc, Jeff Walters and Heidi Hesselink were able to make the decision. “This decision was not an easy one to make, we would like to thank everyone for their submissions however we believe that the funds from the event will go to providing assistance to a long needed capital improvement in our city” said LeBlanc who is the Co-Chair of the Committee. “The Kinsmen and Kinettes hope to create a lasting legacy project for the the residents of the city and that is something we are proud to be a part of”. The event for 2017 promises to be bigger and better than last year. “We know that there were some crowd flow issues last year, we have fixed those” states LeBlanc. This year the goal is to increase the amount of total vendor’s form 50 to 65 for the year to come. Leblanc added that” if the public knows of a vendor that we should be aware of let us know, reach out to us through social media or contact us through our website.” Next years event has also elevated their talent with the recruitment of Private Drive a band based out of Weyburn made up of four young men who cover classic rock, country as well a play a collection of their original songs. In addition The Pistolwhips who are a blues-infused indie rock band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The quartet is comprised of frontman Rylan Schultz, guitarist Paul Kuzbik, bass guitarist Zach Davies, and drummer Tallus Scott. The Pistolwhips combine upbeat indie rock tunes with old school blues licks and a dose of psychedelia to create a sound ...that is dynamic and captivating. In a relatively short period of time, The Pistolwhips have performed across Canada at a number of festivals such as Canadian Music Week, JUNOfest, The Sasktel Jazz Festival, MOSOfest, The Red Bull Sound Stage, Sasktel Summer Invasion, and Winnipeg’s Prairie Barge Festival. The Pistolwhips made their first trip overseas to perform a string of shows in London, England in October of 2014. The band’s powerful stage presence combined with their epic live performances and huge local following has led to some hailing them as a “local super group”. The Pistolwhips have shared the stage with Yukon Blonde, The Sheepdogs, Monster Truck, One Bad Son, Dragonette, Bend Sinister, The Deep Dark Woods, and 36!. The Pistolwhips continue to be road warriors. In February of 2015 they embarked on their biggest tour of Western Canada to date, including a performance at Vancouver’s Media Club and a show with fellow Saskatchewan band Close Talker in Kelowna. They are currently in Toronto laying down new tracks and working on a new album! These guys will take the stage from 9-11! To round the night off is Brody Siebert who is well on his way to proving he is a part of the new crop of country artists on the rise in Canadian country music. Born and raised in the small farming community of Spiritwood Saskatchewan, Brody grew up in a family full of musical talent. He grew up being heavily influenced by older brother Riley, as well as the greats such as Waylon Jennings and Garth Brooks. Brody flew down to Nashville in November 2014 where he recorded three songs with fellow Canadian Aaron Goodvin. The first two single releases “Lay it On Me Tonight” and “Back In Mine” hit Top 65 status on Mediabase Canada. Coming from a family of musical talent, Siebert has worked hard to be the musician he is today. He began learning guitar at 15, and singing came just as natural. His love for writing songs is where is passion lies and is something that speaks true to the artist that Brody is. In the short time he’s been on the scene, Brody has played Craven Country Jamboree, Carlton Trail Jamboree, Country at The Creek and has opened for the likes of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Aaron Pritchett. With an album out in 2015, Brody Siebert is an artist who knows who he is and represents a true rural background and roots that make him country to the core. Tickets are $35.00 in advance or $40.00 at the door and are available online at www.savoursoutheast.com or at Henders Drugs. Do not wait, this event will sell out fast! • 2010 Long List
For Immediate release Toronto, ON (June 17, 2010) The Polaris Music Prize Long List was revealed today by Steve Jordan, Prize Founder and Executive Director. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the prize, which awards $20,00 to the best full-length Canadian album, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. This is the second year Polaris has made the Long List public. The Long List consists of the top 40 full- length Canadian records released from June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010, according to an initial vote by the 198 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury. The jury consists of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada. No music industry personnel with direct financial relationships with artists vote for Polaris. “This year we are experiencing a growing excitement for the Long List. To see why one need only study the breadth and quality of the various records on this year’s edition,” said Jordan. Jordan also announced that the Long List is once again being presented by the Canada Council for the Arts. The Head of the Council’s Music Section, Russell Kelley, said "the Polaris Prize is given to the best album of the year based solely on artistic merit, a key criteria the Canada Council for the Arts uses in its decisions in funding the arts. Given this connection, it is a natural fit for the Council to support the Polaris Long List." The Polaris Jury will now vote on the Long List titles to determine the 10 album Polaris Music Prize Short List which will be revealed July 6 at the Drake Hotel in Toronto and broadcast live across Canada and the U.S.

“Crazy B****”: Discriminatory Language, Radio Censorship, Regulation, and Enforcement Policies in Canada by Rebecca Irene Marie Foley A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2016 Rebecca Irene Marie Foley, 2016 Abstract This thesis focuses on the censorship, or lack thereof, of discriminatory language on Canadian radio stations. In addition to purely discriminatory based language, this project also investigated the ways in which race, gender, sexuality, and ability were employed in popular music. Two data sets were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively to find that private and public radio stations in Canada are more likely to censor discriminatory or explicit content than their community station counterparts. Further, discriminatory language based on gender, is not only more likely to be contained in popular music, but it is also less likely to be censored in comparison to language based on racial or sexual orientation based discrimination. The first data set included 485 songs from the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1985 and 2015. The second data set included 2818 songs from a six-month period (May-October 2015) of the top twenty charts from 27 different radio stations in Canada, including private, public, and community stations. Keywords: radio; broadcast policy; discrimination; popular music; Canada; ii Acknowledgements I wish to thank everyone who had a hand in helping me shape this thesis. From deep class discussions to small conversations outside of an academic environment, each interaction I had talking about my research helped me to refine, explain, and get my thoughts on paper in a relatively coherent way.
