FLANERY ABSTRACT Midcentury American life featured a post-war economy that established a middle class in which disposable income and time for leisure were commonplace. In this socio-economic environment, consumerism flourished, ushering in the Golden Age of the automobile: from 1950 to 1960, Americans spent more time in their automobiles than ever before, and, by the end of the decade, the number of cars on the road had more than doubled. While much critical attention has been given to the role of the automobile in American novels, less has been given to its role in American short stories.

  • The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0: America’S Car Dealers Prepare for Change
The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0: America’s Car Dealers Prepare for Change February 2020 An independent study by Glenn Mercer Prepared for the National Automobile Dealers Association The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0 America’s Car Dealers Prepare for Change by Glenn Mercer Introduction This report is a sequel to the original Dealership of Tomorrow: 2025 (DOT) report, issued by NADA in January 2017. The original report was commissioned by NADA in order to provide its dealer members (the franchised new-car dealers of America) perspectives on the changing automotive retailing environment. The 2017 report was intended to offer “thought starters” to assist dealers in engaging in strategic planning, looking ahead to roughly 2025.1 In early 2019 NADA determined it was time to update the report, as the environment was continuing to shift. The present document is that update: It represents the findings of new work conducted between May and December of 2019. As about two and a half years have passed since the original DOT, focused on 2025, was issued, this update looks somewhat further out, to the late 2020s. Disclaimers As before, we need to make a few things clear at the outset: 1. In every case we have tried to link our forecast to specific implications for dealers. There is much to be said about the impact of things like electric vehicles and connected cars on society, congestion, the economy, etc. But these impacts lie far beyond the scope of this report, which in its focus on dealerships is already significant in size. Readers are encouraged to turn to academic, consulting, governmental and NGO reports for discussion of these broader issues.

  • Courses Taught at Both the Undergraduate and the Postgraduate Levels
Jadavpur University Faculty of Arts Department of History SYLLABUS Preface The Department of History, Jadavpur University, was born in August 1956 because of the Special Importance Attached to History by the National Council of Education. The necessity for reconstructing the history of humankind with special reference to India‘s glorious past was highlighted by the National Council in keeping with the traditions of this organization. The subsequent history of the Department shows that this centre of historical studies has played an important role in many areas of historical knowledge and fundamental research. As one of the best centres of historical studies in the country, the Department updates and revises its syllabi at regular intervals. It was revised last in 2008 and is again being revised in 2011.The syllabi that feature in this booklet have been updated recently in keeping with the guidelines mentioned in the booklet circulated by the UGC on ‗Model Curriculum‘. The course contents of a number of papers at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels have been restructured to incorporate recent developments - political and economic - of many regions or countries as well as the trends in recent historiography. To cite just a single instance, as part of this endeavour, the Department now offers new special papers like ‗Social History of Modern India‘ and ‗History of Science and Technology‘ at the Postgraduate level. The Department is the first in Eastern India and among the few in the country, to introduce a full-scale specialization on the ‗Social History of Science and Technology‘. The Department recently qualified for SAP.

Per discussions with the City staff, the list of businesses is prioritized based on potential water quality impacts by business type and proximity to sensitive water features. Businesses are grouped into three tiers (e.g., high, medium and low priority) based upon these two criteria. Each tier of businesses is classified due to their business type (e.g., automotive-related) and location (e.g., <200 feet from a sewer inlet leading to San Pedro Creek).

  • Young English Learners As Writers: an Exploration of Teacher-Student Dialogic Relationships in Two Mainstream Classrooms
Young English Learners as Writers: An Exploration of Teacher-Student Dialogic Relationships in Two Mainstream Classrooms A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Educational Studies of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services by Elizabeth Lowrance-Faulhaber M.A.T. University of Southern California August 2013 Committee Co-Chair: Dong-shin Shin, Ed.D. Committee Co-Chair: Susan Watts-Taffe, Ph.D. Committee Member: Holly Johnson, Ph.D. Abstract Children in U.S. schools who receive instruction in English yet speak a primary language other than English at home, English learners (ELs), have historically experienced a lack of achievement compared to their monolingual peers. Early literacy instruction has been shown to predict later academic success, although a lack of research exists surrounding young EL children’s writing. The purpose of this study was to explore the dialogic relationships between two mainstream teachers and two young EL children in relation to literacy practices and writing outcomes. Grounding the study in a sociocultural framework, I conducted a multiple-case study of two first-grade classrooms. Participant observations and stimulated-recall interviews provided insight into the classroom literacy practices, the teachers’ decision-making processes, and how the teacher-student dialogic relationships may have influenced student writing outcomes. Findings revealed three related dialogic patterns across cases: a) integrating modes of meaning- making; b) using scaffolding, tools, and strategies; and c) engaging in social activities. A cross- case synthesis led to insights regarding a) the students’ use of voice in writing, b) assessing young EL children who rarely speak, c) valuing teachers’ roles in teacher-student dialogic relationships, d) using graphic organizers as instructional tools, and e) emphasizing the value of asset-based pedagogies.
