It seems but a little while since I left home, yet a full year will soon have circled away—leaving only the memory of the past, its varied scenes and strange events. Many who started in this pilgrimage for gold have sickened and died; others who have reached this country will return poorer than they came; and some will go back to those they love blest with fortune. But these last will be few in number, and their story will be as sunny spots on the dark canvass that will picture forth this epoch in the history of our nation. B. R. Biddle During the last week, I have thought much of Springfield. As “Distance lends enchantment to the view,” so absence brings to mind, more vividly, the endearments of home. Few men would wander from family and friends, if they did but take a philosophic view of things. The partner in our joys and sorrows, the children of our love—the affection of the one, the innocence of the others, would keep us all at home, if we would but take things as they are and accommodate ourselves to the circumstances of our condition. But, as the world is, there is a necessity for gold. There are a thousand and one ways in which money may be used, and society compels us all to have it. Very many have sacrificed every ennobling quality upon the altar of Mammon. There are many men, on these plains, who have adopted a coarseness of manners and language, and who violate the common courtesies of life with an impunity that would indicate their birth and education to have been in a less favored land than the United States. The gold obtained is but a small portion of the history of such an expedition. There is much to be learned of the manner in which the characters of some men are developed by peculiar circumstances, and all may learn lessons of wisdom by the study of themselves. B. R. Durée : 1h 27. Comme la France et le le Royaume-Uni l’ont déjà fait, le Luxembourg organise le concours pour la seconde fois. C’est dans le même endroit qu’en 1962 que la Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Télévision plante le décor, confiant la réalisation et la direction de l’orchestre aux mêmes personnes que quatre ans plus tôt, la présentation étant cette fois assurée par Josiane Shen. Le décor lui aussi change et le grand escalier offre à nouveau ses services, les différents artistes devant le descendre pour se présenter sur scène. La 11 ème édition du concours fut précédée d’un grand nombre de discussions au sein des membres de l’Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion. Le but, louable, de ces propositions était d’améliorer la qualité du concours : le Luxembourg argumentait qu’une présentation des chansons sous forme de vidéos serait préférable, certains pays du sud de l’Europe considérant que 18 participants était beaucoup trop envisageaient un système de demi-finales auquel le Royaume-Uni s’opposa fermement. La Belgique, pourtant sensible aux problèmes linguistiques, allait même plus loin en proposant la sélection d’une seule chanson en français, une en anglais, une en allemand, une en néerlandais ou encore une en scandinave !!!. Quant aux scandinaves qui venaient par là même d’apprendre qu’ils parlaient la même langue leur souci majeur était d’améliorer la qualité des chansons. Certaines de ces remarques sont encore entendues de nos jours, mais le seul changement en cette année 1966 concerne à nouveau le système d’attribution des votes, ou plus justement celui de composition des jurys : il est précisé que ces derniers doivent être constitués de “membres représentatifs du public, parmi lesquels peut être inclus un certain nombre d’experts en musique légère et chanson populaire”.

    Oral Tradition, 5/2-3 (1990):241-266 Wept Thoughts: The Voicing of Kaluli Memories Steven Feld The study of lament forms, including ritual wailing, sung-texted weeping, keen, mourning songs, dirge, and elegy, is complexly located in discourses of the humanities and social sciences. Because lament varieties are reported throughout the world, questions as to the universality or cultural specifi city of their structures and meanings are important and implicitly comparative. Folklorists, philologists, ethnomusicologists, literary scholars, and anthropologists have drawn our attention to a great variety of lament forms. Some researchers have taken a more micro- analytic view of the poetics of lament texts, others a more macro-analytic view of the role that laments play in mourning customs (see Ajuwon l981 and Honko l980 for an overview). Some have concentrated on the differences between laments and other verbal and musical genres. But the key factor that situates all of these studies of laments fi rmly in the area of research on oral traditions is the dynamic interplay of individual expression and collective forms and sentiments. Vladimir Propp put this quite forcefully in his essay on “Folklore and Reality” (l984:16-38). There he draws attention to the fact that while formulae and motifs (like the poetic rhetorical question to the deceased) are common in laments, the genre is more clearly defi ned by improvisation, by lack of close variants, and by a certain lack of close similarity despite common motifs. “Each lament contains unique motifs,” Propp writes, “for example a kind of biography” (32). This biographical dimension, and its linkages to what Propp termed a “subjective evaluation of reality” (33), speaks to the complex interplay of generic norms and individual creativity in lament, and additionally emphasizes how the analysis of lament texts must necessarily be situated in their socio-historical contexts.

    1966 UK Record Releases by Date This is a list of all UK 45 singles and EP’s found on the 45 cat website and any new release sheets as of the 15/03/2016. Generally records that don't have a full release are not included. Some spoken word only records are not listed, plus “story” ones. Records that would have had a specific week when they were fist released, but which dates have not been found, but are known to have been issued on an actual month are included at the end of each weekly listing for the month in question. Numbers in red indicate ownership on 45 cat for those with 5 or more. In some cases, such as chart hits, the number of “wants” is added on. Caution should be noted with ownership figure, as the record might have only been available as a promo record that wasn’t issued to the public. These however will be popular with collectors of records. If it is known to be never issued to the public, what is called on the 45 Cat site as a “stock” record. Then that will not be included. In some cases records by well known acts were never issued as “stock” and some of these have been included, but such records are shown as “promo only”. They are included to show that the record couldn’t have made the charts in 1966. At least as a UK issue! Records that made the charts of the time are only stated where no specific week has been found or if a chart record fails to score 5 ownership indications - indicated by the term hit.
