ABSTRACT Sea cucumbers are a diverse group of echinoderms, approximately more than 1,400 species around the world belonging to six orders and 25 families. In Egypt, sea cucumber is overfished along the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea and in most cases, species are being commercialized without a clear taxonomic identification. Two color morphs of the holothurian Actinopyga mauritiana were found in the Egyptian Red Sea coast and Gulf of Aqaba. Both morphs were found to have different habitats and depth preferences, morphological and molecular examination of both morphs along the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea uncovered new species diversity within the Actinopyga species complex and the discovery of novel species Actinopyga sp. nov. This small genus has sixteen species currently considered valid. The present paper describes a new Indo-West Pacific species, Actinopyga caerulea, of which the most striking character is its bluish coloration. The ossicle assemblage of the new species resembles mostly that of A. bannwarthi Panning, 1944 and A. flammea Cherbonnier, 1979. Key words: Echinodermata, Holothuroidea, Actinopyga, new species, Indo-Pacific Introduction Recent expeditions (in 2003 and 2004) to the Union des Comores, an archipelago in the northern Mozambique Channel, yielded several specimens of a species that had previously been photographed at several localities in the Pacific Ocean (Erhardt & Moosleitner 1995; Erhardt & Baensch 1998; Lane pers. comm.; Myers pers. comm.; Colin pers. comm.; see also plate 1). Cherbonnier & Féral (1984) recorded, and later Féral and Cherbonnier (1986) published a photograph of a specimen from New Caledonia which they identified incorrectly as Actinopyga crassa Panning, 1944. Other specimens have been photographed and no voucher material collected, making definitive identification impossible. -

Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); Seventeenth Regular Meeting: Taxa Being Considered for Amendments to the CITES Appendices The United States, as a Party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), may propose amendments to the CITES Appendices for consideration at meetings of the Conference of the Parties. The seventeenth regular meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (CoP17) is scheduled to be held in South Africa, September 24 to October 5, 2016. With this notice, we describe proposed amendments to the CITES Appendices (species proposals) that the United States might submit for consideration at CoP17 and invite your comments and information on these proposals. Please note that we published an abbreviated version of this notice in the Federal Register on August 26, 2015, in which we simply listed each species proposal that the United States is considering for CoP17, but we did not describe each proposal in detail or explain the rationale for the tentative U.S. position on each species. CITES is an international treaty designed to control and regulate international trade in certain animal and plant species that are affected by trade and are now, or potentially may become, threatened with extinction. These species are listed in the Appendices to CITES, which are available on the CITES Secretariat’s website at http://www.cites.org/sites/default/files/eng/app/2015/E-Appendices-2015-02-05.pdf. Currently, 181 Parties, including the United States, have joined CITES. -

Introduction Chinese softshell turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis (family Trionychidae, suborder Cryptodira), possesses heteromorphic sex chromosomes (ZZ male, ZW female) (Kawai et al. 2007) is widely distributed in China and southeastern Asia (Zhao and Adler 1993) and have several populations named after the place of origin, e.g. Yellow River population, Taihu Lake population, and Japanese population, are well-studied in China (Liu et al. 2004; Xiao et al. 2005; Wang et al. 2010). Owing to the high economic value because of its larger size in male turtles (Figure 1a) in China, identification of the sex of embryos and juvenile is an important area of research. -

NUMBER 1821 MARCH 29, 1957 The Littoral Holothurians of the Bahama Islands BY ELISABETH DEICHMANN Very little is known about the echinoderms of the Bahama Islands, and in particular the holothurians have been almost completely forgotten. In Ives's paper (1891) on the echinoderms of the Bahamas not one holo- thurian is included, and in the survey of the littoral echinoderms of the West Indies, H. L. Clark (1919) lists only one. In 1933 Clark notes under the individual species merely whether or not it has been reported from that area, but gives no list. Evidently he overlooked Edwards' ac- count (1909) of the early stages of "Holothuria floridana," based on ma- terial from Green Turtle Key in the Bahamas, and here tentatively referred to H. mexicana, which apparently is the most common species in that region. As the Bahamas form the northern outpost of the West Indies, with rather extreme ecological conditions, and as they probably serve as a stepping stone for the migration of a number of species to the Bermudas, it would be of great interest to know more about their littoral fauna and to compare it with that of other areas-as for example, that of Biscayne Bay on the eastern coast of Florida. The chance to give a preliminary account of the holothurian fauna of the shallow water of the Bahamas came in the summer of 1952 when I received a small collection made by Libbie Hyman during her six weeks' visit to the Lerner Marine Labora- tory on Bimini Island. -

The release involved 366 Indotestudo elongata (the elongated tortoise) which were seized from illegal wildlife traders in the north of Vietnam as they were being smuggled to China.
