SECTION 3: TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY

Situated in several former royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, surrounded by a few historical sites in northwest Beijing is the campus of Tsinghua University. The garden-like landscape, with the Wanquan River meandering through, has inspired and motivated generations of students.

Tsinghua University was established in 1911 originally as "Tsinghua Xuetang," a preparatory school for students who would be sent by the government to study in universities in the United States. The school was renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was instituted in 1925 and undergraduate students were then enrolled. The name "National Tsinghua University" was adopted in 1928, and in 1929 the Research Institute was set up.

Although Western culture was pervasive in the early history of the university, Chinese culture was also cherished and widely studied. The faculty greatly valued the interaction between the Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern.

After over 90 years’ development and re-establishment of the departments in sciences, economics and management, and the humanities, the Tsinghua graduate school has been recognized nationally, ranking first in the National Evaluation of Graduate Schools. Currently, the university consists of 54 departments distributed in 13 schools, including the schools of sciences, architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, information science and technology, humanities and social sciences, economics and management, law, arts and design, public policy and management, and applied technology. A medical school is currently being established. Tsinghua is developing into a comprehensive university at a breathtaking pace.

Page 11 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China

With a splendid legacy accumulated over the past 90 years, Tsinghua has retained its character and charm while promoting rigorous scholarship research, ensuring academic and educational prestige in China and abroad. The university currently has over 7,100 faculty and staff, with over 900 full professors and 1,200 associate professors, including 34 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 35 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The educational philosophy of Tsinghua is to "train students with integrity." Among the over 100,000 graduates since its founding are many outstanding scholars, eminent entrepreneurs and great statesmen remembered and respected by their fellow Chinese citizens. Hence, to study at Tsinghua is the dream of many Chinese youth. Presently, Tsinghua has over 20,000 students, including 12,000 undergraduates, 6,200 master's degrees candidates and 2,800 doctoral candidates.

With strong support from the nation and in the face of unprecedented opportunities, Tsinghua University is poised to become a world-class university in the 21st century. With the inspiring motto "Self-discipline and Social Commitment", Tsinghua is dedicated to the well being of Chinese society.

Page 15 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China SECTION 6: HOUSING

Due to the large demand for off campus housing in the Wudaokou area, rental prices fluctuate greatly and all information regarding off campus housing should be used as a reference only.

6.1 On Campus

Tsinghua Foreign Student Affairs Office will prepare international student dormitory for incoming students. For 2011 fall semester, the online application system of the foreign student dormitory will be opened in this August. Incoming students of 2011 fall semester has to apply the on campus dorm online.

After reservation, the on campus dorm can be checked in on confirmed date. The Reception Centre at the first floor of Zijing Dormitories Building 19 is 24 hours open. Incoming students are required to show passport and admission notice upon check in the dorm.

There are three types of the international student dormitory. One is the single room, one is double room, and the other is double AB room. You could get more detail information regarding the dormitory through http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn/EN/campus/accommodation.html

Only in the week just before the indicated registration time, the favorable room price is applicable. Those who want to stay even earlier than that week should pay at the normal price of the extra days. Students need to pay for the rental of six months and a deposit of RMB 200.00 yuan altogether upon check-in. Below is the price of the dorm:

Room Type Favorable Room Price Normal Room Price

Single Room 80rmb/room/day 170rmb/room/day

AB Room 80rmb/room/day 160rmb/room/day

Double Room 40rmb/bed/day 90rmb/bed/day

Tsinghua University is running like a community with markets, dining halls, banks, bookstores and other facilities you could need in daily life. You will feel so convenient to live on campus. Zijing Dormitories is about only 7-8 minutes’ ride to the school.

Accommodation for couples and families is not available. Accommodation charge should be paid once for six months in advance and the final estimate will be counted according to how many days the students stay before departure. The price of students’ dorm on campus is fairly reasonable compared to the apartment off campus.

The single apartment is around 11-12 square meters including a bed room and a private bath room. Air-condition, TV set and wireless network is installed in every apartment. Listed below are some important rules:

A. Visitors must register at the reception counter and leave their credentials there. Visitors whose Page 16 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China

credentials are not on hand are not allowed to enter the hall, and meeting may be held in the reception room.

While leaving, the visitors should return the visiting form signed by the visited and get back their credentials. No guests are allowed to stay overnight in the dormitory.

Time for visiting: 8:00--23:00

B. The fee for the dorm will be charged by day, if you want to move out, please notice the administrative staff one day in advance. You could get a form from the reception counter, fill in it and submit to Foreign Student Affairs Office to stamp. With the stamped form, you could start to check out and refund the deposit.

C. You are allowed to move into the dorm on the registration day, but not so much earlier. If you arrive before this date, please contact with International Programs Office about your schedule or you will have to make arrangement to stay in a hotel by yourself.

For more information about the international student dorm, you could visit the website at http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn/EN/campus/zijing-apartment.html. The contact number of the Reception Centre is 86 10 5153 5500.

Or you could contact with the Foreign Student Affairs Office of Tsinghua University for more help by [email protected] or Tel: 86 10 6277 3076.

We offer no service in finding apartment for students living off campus but only some suggestions. Nevertheless, many past international students have elected to live off campus. The following section provides you with additional information about off campus housing.

6.2 Off Campus

From experience, we’d like to offer you two pieces of advice about finding off-campus housing. Firstly, the real estate market can move pretty fast in Beijing. You see a place you like, and within a day or two you might be handing over up to half a year’s rent (potentially in cash!) and signing a contract for you to move in the next week. Secondly, given the contract conditions for living in the international dorms, you could consider checking yourself into the dorms first and then taking your time to look for housing once orientation is over.

6.2.1 Housing Agents

Most international students find their apartments through local housing agents. Housing agents are the primary intermediary between landlords and prospective dwellers. Housing agents are paid by either the landlord or the tenant depending on the contract signed. The agent’s fee is usually one month’s rent. A list of benchmark prices (Fall 2009) for rental prices in the Wudaokou district is shown later.

You can try to contact agents in advance of your arrival in Beijing, but we’d recommend simply seeking one out upon arrival. Either way, if you elect not to live in the dorms, you’ll need a hotel or friend’s place to stay while you search. Inform the housing agency of the day you plan to come to meet them in person and visit apartments. Ask them to have 6 to 12 apartments lined up for you to visit. You can also contact more housing agents on the ground when you are here and get a better understanding of the market.

Page 17 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China

Final negotiations are typically done face-to-face and can take up to 1 or 2 hours. Past international students highly recommend you to bring your buddy or a friend who is fluent in mandarin to help you out. You can expect to have to pay cash for 3-6 months up-front, plus the equivalent of one additional month in deposit for any repairs to the apartment. You should therefore plan ahead and have a source of Chinese currency available before you go apartment hunting. (Side note: if you’re withdrawing cash from an ATM, the limit for each withdrawal transaction is usually RMB 2,500.00, but you can perform multiple withdrawals in a day. Each bank will have its own daily limit for withdrawal too, so plan accordingly!)

There are over a dozen housing agencies in the Huaqing Jiayuan complex alone (the popular residential area near school) and even more in the surrounding area. We have recent international students who have used the following agencies and recommend them to future students. They speak limited or no English so it’d be useful to contact your buddy and have him/her send a quick email in Chinese on your behalf to these agencies.

6.2.2 Nearby Apartment Complexes

The nearest apartment complexes to Tsinghua University are Huaqing Garden, Wenjin International Apartments and Chengfu Gongguan, followed by Dongwangzhuang and Xiwangzhuang. Note that apartments in China are quoted on a ‘gross’ basis, as opposed to ‘net.’ This basically means that all the common areas of the building (hallways, lobbies etc) are equally divided among each unit on a square meter basis. For instance, an apartment quoted as 75m2 may in reality only have 55-65m2 of living space, depending on the size of the building’s common areas.

Huaqing Jiayuan – This complex was built in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and comprises over a dozen apartment buildings of varying quality. Its distinct pink façade dominates the center of Wudaokou. The complex is located on the southeast corner of Chengfu Lu and Zhongguancun Donglu (main intersection Page 19 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China outside East gate). Units range from studios of around 45m2 to 2 or 3 bedroom apartments.

Wenjin International Apartments – Situated right at the South gate of campus, this apartment building is attached to the Wenjin International Hotel. The building was constructed in late 2006 and consists mostly of luxury studios and one-bedroom apartments complete with management office, 24-hour doormen / security and in-house cleaning services (at a cost) available. Studios are quite spacious at 90 m2 with 1 bedroom apartments ranging from 110-160 m2.

Chengfu Gongguan – This pair of six-story apartment buildings was completed just two years ago. It’s situated on the South side of Chengfu Lu, across the road from the Tsinghua South gate. Most of the units are 1 or 2 bedroom apartments of around 90-130m2.

All of the above are a 10-minute walk or 5-minute bike ride to the School of Economics and Management. Huaqing is nearest to the Wudaokou subway station, as well as many of the area’s restaurants, bars and shops. Wenjin is the most convenient to get onto campus. In reality, they’re all quite similar options for international students. Students have also elected to live outside of Wudaokou such as Liudaokou, Zhongguancun or other surrounding area. Prices are generally lower and some students say that the overall condition of the apartments is superior to what is offered in Wudaokou. However, these options will not be as convenient.

This price guide is an estimate based on information compiled by various students between 2008 and 2009:

Page 35 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China SECTION 11: TRAVEL RESOURCES

Your time in Beijing may also be the perfect opportunity to travel to other parts of China or Asia. Within China there are many cities and sights to see. Bring along a China travel guide (i.e. Lonely Planet, Frommer’s, EyeWitness, etc.).

There are various domestic airlines, along with international carriers, that serve Beijing Capital airport (PEK). For the best prices on flights and hotels, you can check out these two airlines and hotel consolidators (similar to Expedia or Orbitz) that are based in China:

 Ctrip (http://english.ctrip.com/)

 Elong (http://www.elong.net)

Both services have English-speaking reps and you can have an e-ticket when you check in at the airport with your passport. Note that most of the time you need to pay cash for your air tickets.

There are plenty of travel agencies in town as well, although the level of English spoken varies dramatically. They can help you arrange flights, hotels, tour packages, and train or bus tickets as well.

A common time to travel is during the National holiday (around the first week of October) and many hotels/tour packages sell-out quickly then. During this time, most of China is on holiday and many domestic tourists flock to destinations within the country. This may be a good time to plan a trip outside of China to avoid some of the congestion.

You will need a dual/multiple entry visa if you plan on leaving the country while you are here, so plan accordingly. You can also get an additional visa if you need one while you are here in Beijing.

Cruises on the Yangtze River are popular and with the completion of the Three Gorges Dam approaching, it may be a good time to take a relaxing cruise. A very helpful and honest travel agent for all things related to a cruise is Andrew Norman. He’s based in YiChang and speaks English fluently. His contact information is below:

Most of the practical facilities are outlined in the On/Off Campus Resources Section. In terms of the more

social aspect of your time at Tsinghua, here’s a summary of some places to get started.

Page 37 International Office, School of Economics and Management Tsinghua University, Beijing China

Where to Study?

Bridge Café – (East side of Huaqing Jiayuan, access from road) Open 24 hours, certainly one of the most reliable studying spots around campus, which serves a variety of sandwiches, salads, pastas, and all-day breakfast. Inquire about their discount card for 15% off. The roof deck, open during the summer, is a great place to enjoy a beer too.

Sculpting In Time – (East side of Huaqing Jiayuan, access from road) Next door to Bridge, offering a larger menu of similar quality. Closes around midnight / often less crowded too.

Tully Café – (6th Floor of Dong Yuan Center above Tous les Jours / KFC) While the food is far from stellar, the Chicken Sandwich and Carbonara are pretty passable. It’s also a great quiet place for small group meetings given their large tables, while floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of light.

Ants Café – (100m West of Wenjin Hotel on Chengfu Lu) Doubles up as a bar, and it’s usually not very crowded. On the downside, the food’s not great and sometimes the music’s a little loud / lights are dimmed down. On the positive side though, groups can almost always find a spacious table there and they have perhaps the largest selection of import beer available in the area.

Ten Year Café – (Take a left 100m after you come out of East Gate) Opened by a former Tsinghua MBA graduate, this café is a common venue for class events. The location’s convenient when some of your group members are bike-less after class.

Where to Grab a Beer?

Lush – (Northeast corner of Huaqing Jiayuan, access from Road through the bookstore) Lush has consistently been voted as one of Beijing’s best student hangouts by various expat publications. While it’s possible to study here during the day, you’re better off coming here for a beer and some bar food (decent burgers!) in the evening. A variety of events such as open mic night or pub quiz night keep the scene fresh.

Ants – (see above) Hit or miss on whether there’s a crowd there, but if you bring your own and want a solid selection of beers, this can be a good place to chill and chat.

Korean Alley – (opposite U-Center, about 100m East of Wudaokou subway station) This entire alleyway is filled with about twenty-odd drinking establishments and restaurants that can often accommodate a group of a dozen people or so quite easily. If you’re just looking for beer and soju with some snack food, this is the place.

La Bamba – (East side of Huaqing Jiayuan, access from road) While the food is nothing to cheer about, this bar has two floors. The first is more like a classic bar with a pool table and foosball table (table football), while the second caters more to larger groups or those looking for a bite. Best (or worst) part of coming here is you can stumble down the stairs straight into the legendary Wudaokou club, Propaganda.

Bridge Café – (see above) Head up to the roof deck in the summer.

Where to Have a Bigger Night Out?

Short of rolling over to the classic clubs around Gongti Beilu (Mix, Vic’s) or Club Bling over in Solana, there are a couple of more local options in Wudaokou.

Propaganda – (East side of Huaqing Jiayuan, access from road) This ‘club’ is notorious for being the party scene of choice for those confined to Wudaokou over the last few years. You can find a crowd of students, local / exchange or international, on almost any night of the week here, just don’t forget to bring your student ID with you on the busier nights.

Club Mango – (Northwest corner of U-center) Opened in Spring 2010, this club is just starting to test the local waters. Preliminary reports suggest it’s a pretty cookie-cutter lounge-style club, complete with comfy seating areas and a dance floor.

Korean Alley – (see above) Frankly you can make a big night out of just bar-hopping within Korean Alley!

Syllable KTV – (Take a left as you come out of East Gate, just past the KFC and Ten Year Café) One thing you’ll learn in China is that any night at KTV invariably devolves into a big night out. Better start learning some Chinese songs… they’ll come in handy out here, and KTV is a great way to get to know your local

Chinese classmates better too!

Taking Care of your Daily Needs

Watson’s – (Lotus Center, NE corner of Chengfu Lu and Zhongguancun Dong Lu) Watson’s is an international chain that sells all your daily sanitary needs, from shampoo to soap, contact lens solution to basic cosmetics. If you’re concerned about buying fake personal care products, this is certainly one of the safest places to buy.

Lotus Center – (NE corner of Chengfu Lu and Zhongguancun Dong Lu) Head up to the second floor and you can find a full-service multi-story supermarket stocking everything from basic electrical appliances and home ware needs to all sorts of groceries. There’s also a beard papa cream puff pastry stand at which you can reward yourself after a long day of shopping.

U-Center – (South side of Chengfu Lu, 100m East of Wudaokou Subway Station) U-Center is a pretty modern shopping complex with a department store, various clothing stores (including Uniqlo), and a host of restaurants on the 5th floor. A full-size supermarket can also be found in the basement, the entrance to which is on the East side of building.

For more options outside of Wudaokou, you can venture over to Zhongguancun, which is just 5 minutes’ cab ride southwest of campus. A lot of new developments have gone up recently, including a Carrefour supermarket, popular restaurant chains such as Bellagio and Zhong Ba Lou (Middle 8th), and it’s also the electronics center of Beijing. Head over to Gome (Guo Mei) or Zhongguancun Center to pick up any electrical appliances you need.

If you’re willing to venture out, we’d recommend you consider going to Nan Luo Gu Xiang (南锣鼓巷), one of the more picturesque, hipper parts of Beijing. In this area, a host of hip and eclectic bars and restaurants can be found tucked away in historical hutongs and alleyways. For the more traditional expat scene, you’ll probably want to head over to San Li Tun Jiu Ba Jie (三里屯酒吧街), a bar street that’s been catering to the expat community for years now, or some of the clubs around Workers’ Stadium (工体北路).
