L o s t A f t e r n o o n . o r g E V E N T S P E A K E R Daniel Joseph "Dan" Lyle (born September 28, 1970) is an American former rugby union player who played for the United States national rugby union team 45 times from 1994 to 2003, serving as U.S. captain in 24 of those matches. Lyle played number eight. Lyle debuted for the U.S. national team against Ireland in November 1994 at Lansdowne Road. He first captained the U.S. squad in a match against Japan in June 1996, in the Pacific Rim tournament. He also led the U.S. sevens team to victory in the bowl competition at the Hong Kong Sevens in 1997. Lyle captained the team at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Lyle appeared for the United States in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and retired from international play in 2003. Through his national team career, Lyle earned 45 caps for his country, and captained his side in 24 matches, including 11 wins in those matches (at the time a record for the most wins all-time by any U.S. captain; that record has since been broken by Todd Clever). He joined English club Bath from the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) for the 1996/7 season. He spent seven seasons at Bath and played in 125 matches for the club. He helped them to lift the Heineken Cup title in 1998 with victory over Brive and captained the side for the 2001/2 season. Lyle moved to the Leicester Tigers in 2003. Lyle was inducted into the USA Rugby Hall of Fame on June 4, 2016, in Philadelphia, PA. T E A M O F T H E Y E A R As rugby players, we have the opportunity to capitalize on our network and physical strength to reach out to our communities, and communities of our peers on the pitch, to provide aid to friends and families. This year's team is not so much a club, but a gathering of the rugby community to help those in need. Rugby Relief invites the rugby community to both request to join their effort, and to recommend a family which needs some extra hands. Currently the command center is run, in collaboration, by members of the Louisiana Lagniappe Womens Rugby, Austin Huns Rugby, and Austin Valkyries Womens Rugby. Aid is provided free of charge for families. Traveling rugby players are kindly hosted by local players, and much of the gear support is graciously provided by donors. Rugby players and friends gather by taking time off of work and putting miles on their vehicles, taking time away from their own work and family lives. Monetary donations help Rugby Relief keep this going by providing provisions such as tools and food for volunteers and families. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Rugby Relief and out of town and local rugby clubs aided over 150 families by helping them clear debris, muck out houses and tear out sheet rock readying these homes for refurbishing. And, as the Harvey clean up began, news of Irma heading for Florida broke. Rugby Relief stepped up for that, as well. 2017 Response Form Yes, I would like to support the Lost Afternoon Rugby Luncheon _____Lead Sponsor $6,000 FMV $780 _____Supporting Sponsor $2,500 FMV $710 _____Corp/Club Table $1,000 FMV $640 _____Individual Tickets __________@$90 FMV $64 _____I would like to donate an item to the silent auction and or raffle. TABLE OF CONTENTS Letter from the President 2 United States Roster 6-7 Scotland Roster 9-10 ‘Til the Motor Stops 13 An American Sporting Experience 22 Thank you to our sponsors 27 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston for tonight’s international game between the USA Eagles and Scotland. Once again we are expecting a warm Texas welcome for our visitors from Scotland and a superb day of rugby for everyone involved. Since the Eagles were last in Houston, they have been developing as a team, recording an impressive November Tour in 2013 where they ran the New Zealand Maori All Blacks close in Philadelphia before recording important wins against Georgia and Russia abroad. They then faced World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and we were all delighted for Coach Mike Tolkin and his team when they qualified for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The significance of tonight’s game is that in just over 12 months time, Scotland and the Eagles will be meeting again in the 2015 Rugby World Cup pool, a chance tonight perhaps for both teams to start their preparations for what will be a very important pool game in Leeds, England on September 27, 2015. Our visitors from Scotland are currently ranked 10 in the World rankings, they had a disappointing RBS Six Nations tournament this year, but with a new coaching team led by former Clermont coach Verne Cotter, the Eagles know they are in for a severe test of their credentials tonight.
