Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country in Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘N’ Roll
October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. Write On: Rosanne Cash, Mark James, Even Stevens On The Market: Detroit – Rust Belt city or city on a and Craig Wiseman were inducted into the Nashville comeback? “Detroit is on a great comeback, but there was a time Songwriters Hall Fame last night (10/11) at the 45th Anniversary Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City where people moved out of the market,” says Center. Issue 467 Radio Regarding Research Whether It’S Arguably Controversial Songs, Listener Preference for Male Or Female Voices Or How Quickly Songs Rotate at No
September 28, 2015, Issue 467 Radio Regarding Research Whether it’s arguably controversial songs, listener preference for male or female voices or how quickly songs rotate at No. 1 (see feature in September print issue), research continues to be regarded as a key data point for programming decisions. But how much of that is lip service? Country Aircheck spoke with several radio pros for their thoughts about a budget line that seems as easily slashed as it is vital. Recess Is Over: Many of those we spoke with point to the recession of 2009 as a tipping point. “Anything that wasn’t nailed down was UPDATE cut,” says consultant Joel Raab. “Research, consultants – it all got cut.” How much of that Joel Raab Thinking Strait: MCA’s George Strait visits The Bobby has been recovered is a matter of perspective. Issue 496 Spotify: a Massive AMT? Streaming Services’ Impact, Or Lack Thereof, in Paying Rights Holders Remains a Thorny Topic Across All Levels of the Business
April 25, 2016, Issue 496 Spotify: A Massive AMT? Streaming services’ impact, or lack thereof, in paying rights holders remains a thorny topic across all levels of the business. Just ask Taylor Swift, whose music is still not available on Spotify. However, a growing number of artists are celebrating and celebrated by that company’s ability to positively impact careers. From Sam Hunt to Maren Morris and beyond, Spotify’s growing music listening ecosystem offers unique fan connections and perhaps unprecedented information about listening behavior. Taken together, those factors are making a difference in the music business and, to a lesser degree, at radio. “These are people who are active listeners – a captive audience we’ve never had before that allows us to do research we’ve never Kenny Watchers: Blue Chair/Columbia’s Kenny been able to do,” says artist manager Greg Chesney hangs with radio friends at Saturday’s Hill. “We could never have afforded research (4/23) launch of the Spread The Love Tour in Auburn, AL. on a sample size as large as what the streaming services are giving us.” The first time Hill felt Spotify’s influence was Greg Hill with Jana Kramer and “I Got The Boy.” “We’re Kenny Lays Out Big Spread in a battle [at radio] with a female artist and Blue Chair/Columbia’s Kenny Chesney and 50,000 fans saw it pop up on Spotify’s Viral 50,” he says. launched his Spread the Love Tour Saturday (4/23) in Alabama at “Last June was touch-and-go [on the singles charts], but on Spotify Auburn University’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. -
