CAP UCLA Presents Lucinda Williams with Special Guest Bill Frisell Plus Sean Row Mar
Press Release Friday, December 18th, 2015 Contact: Ashley Eckenweiler [email protected] CAP UCLA Presents Lucinda Williams with special guest Bill Frisell plus Sean Row Mar. 4 at Royce Hall Join us in appreciating “America’s best songwriter” (TIME magazine) Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA is proud to present three-time Grammy award winner Lucinda Williams, who effortlessly blends folk, rock, country, and blues into electric, intimate performance. She is joined by special guest Bill Frisell—one of the leading guitarists in jazz—for an exciting collaboration that features on her upcoming album The Ghosts of Highway 20. Alt-folk singer-songwriter Sean Rowe will open the evening, illuminating his eclectic influences with a remarkable voice . Tickets ($29-$59) for Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. are available now at cap.ucla.edu, via Ticketmaster and at the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310.825.2101. Lucinda Williams has been maneuvering down a path all her own for more than three decades now. She began in Lake Charles, Louisiana: a town with a rich tradition in all of America’s indigenous music, from country to the blues. After several years of playing the hardscrabble clubs of her adopted state of Texas, she gained a solid enough footing to record her self-titled album that would later become a touchstone for the Americana movement. But she didn’t sit still after that. For much of the next decade, Williams paid her dues and built up a fan base the hard way: winning hearts show by show, not overnight. -
Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country in Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘N’ Roll
October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. Write On: Rosanne Cash, Mark James, Even Stevens On The Market: Detroit – Rust Belt city or city on a and Craig Wiseman were inducted into the Nashville comeback? “Detroit is on a great comeback, but there was a time Songwriters Hall Fame last night (10/11) at the 45th Anniversary Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City where people moved out of the market,” says Center. The cardinal symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations sleep paralysis and disturbed nighttime sleep. The purpose of this thesis was to study a population-based cohort of children and adolescents with narcolepsy in western Sweden to determine the incidence and relationship with the H1N1 influenza vaccination, psychiatric comorbidity, cognitive profile, health-related quality of life, adaptive behavior and parenting stress. Methods: We aimed to identify all individuals below 18 years of age who developed narcolepsy between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2010. Post-H1N1 influenza vaccination (PHV) narcolepsy was considered in patients with clinical onset within 10 months of vaccination. Psychiatric comorbidity was investigated using a test battery of semi-structured interviews and screening tools. -

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

The Machine Girl's Testament Maskinflickans
VERSOPOLIS FIVE The Machine Girl’s Testament Maskinflickans Testamente Ida Linde Translated from the Swedish by Irene Ömark Hall Versopolis at Ledbury Poetry Festival 2015 Published by Ledbury Poetry Festival The Master’s House, Bye Street, Ledbury Herefordshire HR8 1EA UK www.poetry-festival.co.uk Copyright © Ida Linde 2015 Translations © Irene Ömark Hall 2015 Designed & typeset in Arno at Five Seasons Press, Hereford www.fiveseasonspress.com and printed on Five Seasons book-quality recycled paper by Impact Print & Design, Hereford Versopolis is a unique, Europe-wide platform. It gives emerging European poets the chance to reach an audience beyond the boundaries of the language they write in by translating and publishing their poems and inviting them to perform at festivals. The Loneliness of the Penalty Taker The year was 1998, or perhaps 1999? And the location was a small theatre in a northern Swedish coastal-town. Four to five girls, and maybe a fuzzy guy as well, read their own poems with fear in their voices. The exception was Ida. Ida Linde read with a sure voice, making contact with the 10-15 listeners. I don’t remember a single line from this occasion, but I remember why I went. The contrast with the culture of motors and sports in my small-town hole was deafening and beautiful. There and then I realised that poetry could be something you worked with, were forced to relate to. With time, the people who read poetry on that stage became art- ists, teachers, and published poets. It began, as everyone predicted, with Ida Linde’s debut. -

Making the Threatening Other Laughable: Ambiguous Performances of Urban Vernaculars in Swedish Media
Making the threatening Other laughable: Ambiguous performances of urban vernaculars in Swedish media See also: Jonsson, Rickard, Franzén, Anna & Milani, Tommaso M. (2020). Making the threatening other laughable: Ambiguousperformances of urban vernaculars in Swedish media, Language & Communication, 71, 1-15. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.langcom.2019.11.001 Introduction Youth speech styles in multilingual settings have been the object of a large body of sociolinguistic inquiry since the early 1980s (see Hewitt, 1982, 1986; Kotsinas, 1988; see also Cheshire et al., 2011; Kern and Selting, 2011; Madsen, Karrebæk and Møller, 2015; Nortier and Svendsen, 2015; Quist and Svendsen, 2010; Wiese, 2012). Rampton (2011, 2015) has recently suggested the umbrella term ‘contemporary urban vernaculars’ to label these linguistic phenomena in a way that transcends age and ethnicity. After all, contemporary urban vernaculars are not only employed by young people (see in particular Rampton, 2015; Eliaso Magnusson and Stroud, 2012), nor are they spoken by ethnic minorities alone (Årman, 2018). In the Swedish context, the term ‘ortensvenska’ (‘Suburban Swedish’) has been used to refer to these linguistic phenomena. Here the Swedish word orten literally means ‘suburb’ and carries the social class connotation of the American ‘project’ or the British ‘estate’. Another well spread label of the same style, ‘Rinkeby Swedish’ (Rinkebysvenska), also refers to an urban periphery: the multiethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. Most importantly for the purpose of this article, ‘Rinkeby’ Swedish has been turned by media discourses into an ‘icon’ (Irvine and Gal, 2000) of ethnic otherness, associated with an aggressively sexist and homophobic masculinity (Author 1, 2007; Author 1 and Author 3, 2009; Author 3, 2010; Author 3 and Author 1, 2012: Stroud, 2004, see also Cornips, Jaspers and Rooij, 2015 for a discussion on labelling of styles). -
