    Citation for Her Excellency Quentin Bryce Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia AC, CVO Her Excellency Quentin Bryce has enjoyed a rich and distinguished career as an academic, lawyer, community and human rights advocate, senior public officer, university college principal, and vice-regal representative in Queensland, and now Australia. In 1965, Her Excellency, graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from The University of Queensland and, in the same year, was one of the first women admitted to the Queensland Bar. In 1968 she became the first woman to be a faculty member of the Law School where she had studied, and in 1978 she joined the new National Women's Advisory Council. This was followed by a number of positions, including the first director of the Queensland Women's Information Service, the Queensland Director of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner in 1988. She was appointed Inaugural Chair and CEO of the National Childcare Accreditation Council in 1993, and from 1997-2003 served as Principal of The Women’s College at the University of Sydney. Quentin Bryce’s contribution to advancing human rights and equality, the rights of women and children, and the welfare of the family was recognised in her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988 and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2003. Also in 2003, she was invested as a Dame of Grace of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Ms Bryce was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Macquarie University (New South Wales) in 1998, an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Charles Sturt University (New South Wales) in 2002, and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by The University of Queensland in 2006.

    PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS "HISTORY ON A HILL" A Notable Pilgrimage Through the Annals of Memory and Time [By NORMAN S. PIXLEY, C.M.G., M.B.E., V.R.D., Kt.O.N., F.R.Hist.S.Q.] (Read at a Meeting of the Society on 24 September 1970.) In a commanding position at Toowong Cemetery on the hill which faces the main gate, rises a tall slender column fashioned somewhat in the form of a minaret. Mounted on a base, it dominates the scene and marks the grave of Queensland's second Governor, Samuel Wensley Blackall. In a semi-circle with a radius of no more than twenty paces from this monument, rest some whose names feature prominently in the history of the Colony of Queensland. One of the verses in Grey's beautiful Elegy Written in the Country Churchyard of Stoke Poges reads:— "Perhaps in this neglected spot is laid some heart Once pregnant with celestial fire. Hands that the rod of empire might have swayed Or waked to ecstasy the living lyre". But with those who He within this small area on the hill at Toowong the stones which mark their resting places tell us who they were, also in some cases briefly what they did and one who wishes may find out more about them by researching through the records of the Colony. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. As a schoolboy, he was introduced to the Prince of Wales and they were to be close friends for over fifty years. Carrington was the Liberal member for High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire in 1865-68. He became a captain in the Royal House Guards in 1869 and in 1875-76 was aide-de-camp to the Prince of Wales on his tour of India. In 1881 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the Royal Buckinghamshire Infantry. In 1878 he married Cecilia (Lily) Harbord, the daughter of Baron Suffield. In 1885, at the urging of the Prince of Wales, Carrington was appointed governor of New South Wales. With his wife and three daughters, he arrived in Sydney in December 1885 and they remained in the colony for almost five years. The Carringtons were a popular couple and generous hosts, especially during the celebrations of Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1887 and the New South Wales centenary celebrations in 1888.
