Alice Evangaline Jebaselvi, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D. A Psychological Cry of an Alienated Woman: Anita Desai’s Cry, The Peacock 1 Cry, the Peacock, A Feminine Novel Cry, the Peacock, by the most famous Indian writer, Anita Desai, remains a splendid piece of writing. The novel has its unique genius and characters. The theme of alienation a recurring motif of Anita Desai is found in this novel. Cry, the Peacock is a typically “feminine” novel, a novel of sensibility rather than action. The novel Cry, the Peacock portrays the psychological sufferings of Maya, a young protagonist. Maya’s Life and Suffering Maya was a childless woman. Maya’s detached life was another reason for her psychological disorder. Whomever she loved in her life departed from her very soon and she was alienated completely. Maya loved her father and her pet dog too. Her pet dog’s death affected the inner mind of Maya. Maya, apart from all differences, loved her husband to the core. But Gautama became careless and never noticed the psychological imbalance of his wife. Her utmost love made her to believe the prophecy. She was more scared of her death than her departure from Gautama. She believed that the revelation of the prophecy may create a wall between them. So she hid the prophecy from Gautama, who was very much detached in life. Once when Maya was fully admiring the moon, Gautama stared to talk about a case. In a fit of frenzy Maya pushed him from upstairs. Maya was psychologically affected because of the death of Gautama. As she felt guilty, she committed suicide and underwent a pathetic psychological death. A Motherless Girl Maya was a motherless girl, who was over cared by her father. When she married Gautama she felt that, she lost her father and his affection forever. Often, she used to contrast things with her father’s home. Maya was over joyful with the company of her father and her whole world went around him. The first shocking incident she met in her life was the prophecy of the albino priest, which pushed her into a fit of fear. Only in her house, Maya had complete ecstasy. She says, “Delight makes me drowsy” (35). In the palm of Maya’s father, Maya was innocent enough to know, the humdrums of the outside world The Prophecy of the Albino Priest The most tremendous thing that happened during the span of Maya’s life was nothing but the prophecy of the albino priest. The prophecy mingled into her blood which even after many years gave her fear and tension. Maya used to say, “He had been-large or small? I cannot remember, but his eyes I do: they were pale, opaque, and gave him an appearance of morbidity, as though he had live like a sluggish white worm…” (29). Death’. ‘to one of your’. When you are married-and you shall be married young’… ‘Death-an early one-by unnatural causes’… ‘Four years after your marriage, so the stars prophecy’. (29-31) The thought of the albino priest disturbed Maya. The prophecy of the albino priest was the first shock in her life. It troubled her tender heart. Each word of the priest was very clear and was recorded well in her mind.

Dhar Professor, HoD Department of Humanities Uttaranchal University & Shriya Goyal Assistant Professor Uttaranchal University India Abstract Anita Desai in her attempts to capture the essence of a character who moves away from society and lives in a sort of exile portrays the struggles such an individual faces before they arrive at a reclusive solution. Their solitude is often either forced or voluntary. Her protagonists are primarily female and they struggle with a tremendous inner tension. Cry, The Peacock is the story of a young girl Maya trapped in a loveless marriage. Having lost her mother at a young age she looks for affection in other sources and becomes extremely sensitive. Brought up by a doting, over-protective father she believes in romance and love. Maya suffers from 'Electra Complex' which is partly the reason why she marries a man much older than her. But her husband Gautama turns out to be nothing like her father. He seems to be a cold, unfeeling intellectual who considers Maya a stubborn, spoilt child who needs to be disciplined and taught the meaning of real life. Their marriage shows visible signs of strain but Gautama remains unaware of it and also of the loneliness that he subjects Maya to through his condescending attitude. The first step in understanding Aristotle's account of mimesis is remembering that he spent many years studying at Plato's Academy. In Platonic thought, the things we encounter via our senses, the phenomena, are imitations of ideal forms. Art (whether poetry or painting), in imitating the phenomena, is thus merely an imitation of an imitation. Plato also divides imitation by medium (words, paint, marble, etc.). He further divides the verbal techniques of imitation into pure imitation or mimesis, in which an actor impersonates a character on stage, and diegesis, or narration, in which a narrator speaks in the third person about events. Epic is a mixed form, using both impersonation and narration when performed by a rhapsode. Plato tends to condemn imitation as degrading, because (1) impersonation can inculcate bad or non-rational habits and (2) because it focuses attention on mere phenomena. ABSTRACT The reflection of ecological concerns in literature has made its landmark entry with the writings of Raja Rao, R.K Narayan, Bhabani Bhattacharya, Kamala Markandya, Ruskin Bond Anita Desai, Kiran Desai and Amitav Ghosh. One of the important aspects of these writers is that they write predominantly the relationship between man and nature. They have given more poignancy to the exploration by dealing not only with beauty of the nature but also with power of the nature. Amitav Ghosh is one of the most eminent and accomplished writers of this genre with a strong eco-consciousness. He occupies a significant place in the world of ecocriticism. His works deal with the major themes of migration, displacement, subaltern experiences as well as the global concerns of environment related to flora and fauna. In the present paper, two novels of Ghosh The Hungry Tide (2004) and River of Smoke (2011) are considered for analyzing his consciousness towards ecology. She is one of the prominent diasporic women novelists who mainly focus on female protagonists in their novels. Mukherjee strongly believes that a genuine fiction should epitomize the emotional, intellectual and physical responses of the characters when they are caught in a situation which is strange to them. Her protagonists are projected as individuals who have the potentiality to face the bitter truth of their lives as immigrants, but do not fall prey to the circumstances; rather they are brave enough to accustom themselves in the new environment. They are presented as paragons of vigour and valour to wrestle with the problems of life for the sake of survival. Mukherjee's protagonists leave a long lasting influence on readers’ mind as they finally emerge out as successful beings in their adopted land. The fiction, The Holder of the World, is an ideal unification of the past and the present where the author traces the story of Hannah Easton, a New Englander, who was ultimately deemed as the mistress to an Indian Emperor. The novel exposes the change in geographical and cultural space - from America to India through England, and as a result of which the young protagonist renovates herself.
