ROCK the BALLET Starring BAD BOYS of DANCE Die Neue Show 2013 Rasta Thomas´ ROCK THE BALLET starring BAD BOYS OF DANCE Die Neue Show 2013 Biografien Das Kreativteam: RASTA THOMAS (Künstlerischer Direktor) Rasta wurde 1981 in San Francisco geboren, seine Kindheit verbrachte er im saudiarabischen Riyadh. Seine Tanzausbildung absolvierte er an der weltbekannten Kirov Akademie in Washington D.C. Als Jugendlicher schrieb Rasta Tanzgeschichte im Bereich internationaler Ballett-Wettbewerbe durch eine ungewöhnlich erfolgreiche Teilnahme: Zu seinen Auszeichnungen gehören u. a. der Spezialpreis der Jury beim Internationalen Tanzwettbewerb in Paris 1994, die Goldmedaille in der Kategorie „Junior Men” beim Internationalen Ballettwettbewerb in Varna 1996 sowie die Goldmedaille in der Kategorie „Senior Men” beim Internationalen Ballettwettbewerb in Jackson, USA. 1995 wurde Rasta Mitglied der Company „Le Jeune Ballet de France”, als Erster Solist wechselte er 1997 zum „Hartford Ballet”. Gast-Engagements führten ihn u. a. zum „American Ballet Theatre”, „Victor Ullate Ballet of Spain”, „National Ballet of China”, „Joffrey Ballet”, „Lines Contemporary Ballet”, „Complexions Contemporary Ballet”, der „Lar Lubovitch Dance Company” sowie dem „Pacific Northwest Ballet”. 2001 wurde Rasta Thomas als erster Amerikaner Mitglied des russischen Kirov Balletts in St. Petersburg, zwei Jahre später engagierte ihn das „Dance Theatre of Harlem” als Erster Solist. Zu seinen zahlreichen Rollen gehören Albrecht in „Giselle”, Basilio in „Don Quixote”, Ali in „Le Corsaire”, ferner tanzte er in Werken von George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Debbie Allen, Ulysses Dove und Jerry Mitchell. Rasta wirkte in verschiedenen Fernseh- Dokumentationen mit, die im Rahmen der Oscar-Verleihungen stattfanden, unterstützte mit seinem Auftritt die internationale Hilfskampagne für GAP und trat im Film „One Last Dance” mit Filmstar Patrick Swayze auf. Vor dem Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten tanzte Rasta im Weißen Haus, und mit Aretha Franklin trat er in Harlems berühmtem „Apollo Theater” auf. 2005 war er einer der Tanzstars in Twyla Tharps erfolgreichem Musical „Movin' Out” am Broadway. Als Gaststar übernahm Rasta Thomas die Titelrolle in „Othello” beim „American Ballet Theatre” während der Gastspielsaison an der Metropolitan Oper in New York. Rasta Thomas ist Gründer und Leiter der „Bad Boys of Dance”, im Jahr 2008 kreierte er zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Adrienne Canterna die Show „Rock the Ballet”. ADRIENNE CANTERNA-THOMAS (Choreografin/Co-Direktorin) Ihre Ausbildung absolvierte Adrienne als Stipendiatin an der Kirov Academy in Washington D.C. Sie hat viele Preise bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben gewonnen, u. a. die „Women's Junior Gold Medal” beim USA International Ballet Competition in Mississippi, den Titel der „Teen Miss Dance of America” und den „Grishko Award of Excellence in Ballet”. Außerdem tanzte sie beim „Washington Ballet” und dem „Complexions Contemporary Ballet”. Sie trat häufig als Gast in Galas auf, so zum Beispiel bei „Les Gala des Étoiles” in Montreal, wo sie den „Le Corsaire”-Pas de deux mit dem internationalen Star des Balletts, Carlos Acosta, tanzte. Als Solistin wirkte sie in Placido Domingos „Tribute to the Washington Opera” in einer von Debbie Allen (bekannt durch PBS, Public Broadcasting Service) choreografierten und inszenierten SeQuenz von „Stars and Stripes” mit. Adrienne arbeitet weltweit als Tänzerin, Pädagogin, Choreografin und Jury-Mitglied. Im Film „Step up” wirkte sie als Solistin mit. Sie ist die Choreografin der international erfolgreichen Show „Rock the Ballet” von Rasta Thomas. Adrienne Canterna-Thomas ist Gründerin und Künstlerische Leiterin der „Pretty Girls of Dance”. www.prettygirlsofdance.com WILLIAM CUSICK (Video/Projection Designer) William ist ein Video- und Projektionskünstler mit Wohnsitz in New York City. Seine Arbeiten waren in Produktionen an der Brooklyn Academy of Music Harvey, am Lincoln Center Theater, New York Theater Workshop, „Culture Project”, im „Ontological- Hysteric Theater”, in „The Chocolate Factory”, in „PS122” („Performancespace 122” in NY) sowie in verschiedenen Theatern in Kanada und Europa zu sehen. Cusick erhielt 2007 den „Henry Hewes Design Award for Projections” für seine Arbeit an Tom Stoppards „The Coast of Utopia”, das im Theater des Lincoln Centers gezeigt wurde. Cusick wirkte bei vier Produktionen der experimentellen Theatertruppe „Temporary Distortion” mit, zuletzt bei „Americana Kamikaze” im „PS122”. William Cusick wurde durch das NEA/TCG, einem Programm zur Förderung der Designer- Laufbahn, von 2009 bis 2011 gefördert. PHILLIP CARMAN (Ballet Master) Der ehemalige Künstlerische Leiter des „Maryland Ballet”, Phillip Carman, kann auf eine erfolgreiche Karriere im klassischen Tanz zurückblicken. Er tanzte beim „Pennsylvania Ballet”, dem „National Ballet of Canada”, bei „Les Grands Ballet Canadians”, beim „Tanz Projekt München” und kann aus einer reichhaltigen Erfahrung schöpfen. Phillip Carman ist gefragt als Pädagoge von Meisterklassen, Choreograf und künstlerischer Berater. Als Kultur-Botschafter arbeitete er in Italien, seine Choreografien werden in Europa und den USA von der Presse nach wie vor begeistert aufgenommen. Als Künstlerischer Leiter des „Maryland Ballet” wurde er von der Stadt Baltimore für seinen Beitrag zur kulturellen Entwicklung der Stadt gewürdigt. Er arbeitet als Coach bei internationalen Wettbewerben und sitzt in der Jury einiger renommierter Tanzwettbewerbe. Phillip Carman war ebenfalls Künstlerischer Leiter des „St. Paul Chamber Ballet” und gehörte zum Mitarbeiterstab des „Miami City Ballet”, dem „Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet” sowie dem „Boston Ballet”. TONY MARQUES (Lightning Supervisor/Production Stage Manager) Tony ist als Produktionsmanager und Lichtdesigner freiberuflich tätig, die größte Erfahrung in diesen Bereichen hat er mit Tanzproduktionen. New Yorker Jubiläums-Saison des „Rebecca Kelly Ballet”, für Wendy Osserman und für SYREN (Modern Dance Company) und das „Nicholas Andre Dance Theater”. Außerdem übernahm er die Gestaltung für „C. Eule Dance” im Cunningham Studio, „The Take Dance Company” im Joyce SoHo, für SYREN im Ailey Citigroup Theater sowie für die „Thomas-Ortiz Dance Company” im Dance Theater Workshop, einem renommierten Aufführungsort für zeitgenössischen Tanz in New York. Darüber hinaus gestaltete er die Off-Broadway-Show „Silent Cry” der Gruppe „Lion Theater” im Theater Row und eine Weihnachts- Gala für die Sängerin Linda Eder im Palace Theater am Broadway. Die Tänzer und Tänzerinnen TIM OLSON (Dance Captain) stammt aus Anoka im US-Staat Minnesota. Im Alter von drei Jahren begann er zu tanzen, seit dem 15. Lebensjahr unterrichtet er. Tim wurde in Jazz- und Stepptanz, Ballett, Zeitgenössischem Tanz und HipHop an der „Northland School of Dance“ ausgebildet, sein Training setzte er später an so renommierten Schulen wie dem „Broadway Dance Center“ und „Steps on Broadway“ fort. Inzwischen gibt er selbst Meisterklassen und choreografiert in unterschiedlichen Tanzprojekten. Beim Wettbewerb „West Coast Dance Explosion“ holte er den „National Teen Title“, in Europa trat er beim österreichischen Festival „Tanzsommer“ auf; im Rahmen eines Wettbewerbs der New York City Dance Alliance schafft er es unter die drei besten „Senior Male Dancers“. Er tanzte beim „Odyssey Dance Theater“ in Salt Lake City und wirkte in Werken wie „It’s a Wonderful Life“, „Giselle“ und „Romeo und Julia” mit. JAMES BOYD wuchs in Jacksonville, Florida, auf. Er nahm Unterricht in Klassischem und Zeitgenössischem Ballett, Jazztanz, HipHop, Breakdance, Stepptanz sowie in Modernem Tanz. Am „Suny Purchase College” im US-Staat New York erwarb er 2010 den Abschluss Bachelor of Fine Arts. James wirkte in zahlreichen Werken namhafter Choreografen mit, unter ihnen Bill T. Jones, Bella Luwitsky, George Balanchine, Ronen Koresh und Milton Myers. 2010 tanzte er vor Sir Elton John und Lady Gaga anlässlich einer Benefiz-Veranstaltung in der Carnegie Hall; und 2011 trat er beim Ballett-Wettbewerb „Dance Open“ in St. Petersburg auf. JOSEPH ARRIGO kam im kanadischen Newmarket, Ontario, zu Welt. Seine tänzerische Laufbahn begann bei „Elite Danceworx“ in Markham, wo er sich nach der Waganowa- Methode ausbilden ließ und den international anerkannten Abschluss machte. 2010 gewann er den Grand Prix beim „Youth America Grand Prix“ in Chicago, der ihm die Teilnahme am internationalen Finale in New York City ermöglichte. Since this time, the Conservatoire central office has liaised closely with all of its Member Schools to ensure students are not unduly disadvantaged by measures taken, to guarantee that support and good practice can be shared across all Schools, and ensure that the Conservatoire is meeting its obligations with regard to the Office for Students’ requirements. The Covid19 pandemic has required all of our Schools to take emergency measures to deliver the courses of study online. As government restrictions ease, Schools may resume on-site delivery partially and/or fully, depending on the requirements they must fulfil to ensure the safety of all students and staff. However, should the government re-impose a more severe level of restrictions, this may force Schools to adjust their delivery again, meaning the delivery of your course may need to partially or fully be online. Changes to how Conservatoire courses of study have previously been delivered in Member Schools prior to March 2020 are rigorously consulted upon and reviewed by the Conservatoire Learning, Teaching and Quality Assurance Committee, and by the External Examiner for each course. These bodies ensure that the quality of delivery meets the appropriate standards and that there is independent oversight of proposed changes.

Accepting Tchaikovsky’s choice of sub- ject for the opera, the Theatre Directorate selected Alexandre Dumas’ French adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King for the ballet. Tchaikovsky was not pleased with the subject selection because he felt it did not lend itself to theatrical presentation and was therefore quite unsuited to serve as a scenario for a ballet. Both the opera and ballet were presented on December 18, 1892. The ballet, conducted by Ric- cardo Drigo, was received somewhat unfavorably. Dance historians have attributed this to the Nutcracker’s unusual story, which was quite different from the romantic tales normally presented. The Nutcracker choreography was begun by the redoubtable Marius Petipa. The balance of the work was taken up by his assistant, Leon Ivanov, when Petipa fell ill. According to historical accounts, when the ballet was finally produced, Petipa refused to have his name linked with it, feeling his own part in its creation was insufficient to be publicly announced.
