NEW MEXICO'S MANY ENVIRONMENTS New Mexico is the fifth largest state of the Union, measuring390 miles from north to south and 350 miles from east towest, a total of 77,866,240 acres. Within this vast expanse of land, six of theseven life zones found. in the United States are represented. Diversity of.environments is due to sharp variations in altitude,ranging from less than 3,000 feet above sea level to more than 13,000 feet. The Contine4- al Divide bisects the state in a north-south line runningwest of the Rio Grande Valley. The land slopes downward from high plateaus in the north, punctuated by the uplift ofmany discontinuous mountain ranges and vasenetworks of mesas. Population in New Mexico has tended, to congregate at altitudes of 7000 feet and below, especially in those area where-water- is ilable. LIFE ZONES IN NEW MEXICO 1. The Lower Sonoran Zone This zone covers 19,500 square miles in the southern part of the 'state at altitudes below 5,000 feet. Here the dominant plant forms are creosote bush, black grama grass and bunch grass, mesquite, yucca, sotol, devil's claw, agave, prickly pear and other cactus. The area includes the Lower Pecos Valley north to Rowell, the Rio Grande Valley north to Socorro and the Deming Plain west to the state border. Winters are warm in this zone and ers are hot. The land is arid with-an annual rainfall that varie between 11/2 to 12 or 15 inches, falling mainly inthe summer. W rever there ishter,6 a long grow- ing season is possible. Princi animals are,the hite tailedeer, . coyote and fox. 2, The Upper Sonoran Zone This zone covers some 78,482 square miles in New Mexico, or about two thirds of the state's total land area. It ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 feet. Most of the grazing and agricultural land of the state lies within this areawhose natural growth is principally blue gramA, galleta and other grasses,',juniper, pirion, live oak, mountain sycamore, prickly pear, agave and yucca.

Olsen and Harry C. Myers At the time this was written, Michael Olsen was professor of history at New Mexico Highlands University at Las Vegas, and Harry Myers was superintendent of Fort Union National Monument. Both are acknowledged scholars of the Santa Fe Trail and frequent contributors to WT. Their discovery and preparation of this significant document is a substantial contribution to Trail historiography. They presented more material about Captain Gallego, along with the story of the discovery of the diary, at the 1993 SFTA symposium. This is the first of two parts. Part Two of this article is on a separate PDF. For over a century historians have speculated about the circumstances surrounding William Becknell's jour- ney across the plains in 1821, including such issues as where he was heading and the route he followed into New Mexico. Almost exclusively they have relied on Becknell's own account of his trek. But other documentary evidence exists in the diary of Militia Urbana Captain Pedro Ignacio Gallego, who with his troops encountered Becknell's party near present Las Vegas, New Mexico, on November 13, 1821. This diary has lain untranslated and unappreciated in the Mexican Archives of New Mexico for over 1OO years. It challenges some previously held views of Becknell and his expedition. It is presented here with a short introductory narrative, annotation of its salient points, and commentary on the precise geographical information it provides.

    LAND RECORDS IN THE TENNESSEE STATE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES Tennessee State Library & Archives Nashville Tennessee Copies of Tennessee’s early land records are on file in the Archives Section. These records include the early grants issued by North Carolina in addition to those granted by Tennessee Extensive holdings of land warrants and certificates of survey are also included in the land records in the Archives. Only a small percentage of the land granted in Tennessee was free land, and this was given to individuals who had performed some service to North Carolina. Included in this group were veterans of the North Carolina Continental Line, and their heirs and assignees; the commissioners, guards, surveyors, and chain carriers who laid off the Military Reservation for soldiers’ grants; and the Cumberland settlers. The word “grant” is used to denote not necessarily free land, but the first private ownership of the land. This leaflet deals with the background of the Watauga and Cumberland Settlement grants, the Revolutionary War grants, and the warrants on which these grants were based. It gives also a brief history of Tennessee’s struggle for total independence from the mother state, and outlines the procedures for granting land in the several divisions of the state. Finally, it describes the master card index to land records which is used by researchers and by members of the Archives staff. It is intended to help answer some of the frequent questions on the history of land granting in Tennessee. Watauga Settlement In 1769 the first permanent white settlement in Tennessee was established on the Watauga River in the present Carter County.

HOWARD The land grant records of the British colony of West Florida comprise a fairly complete census of the population of the colony in the early years. 1 Land was granted by the king-in-council and the governor and council. Grants by the former were presented to the latter for execution in a mandamus. The governor and council in West Florida usually set aside certain days in each month for consideration of petitions for grants of land, so the land grant records of the colony comprise a part of the minutes of the council. The proclamation of 1763 forbade settlement west of the watershed of the Appalachian moun- tains until the plan for the gradual extinction of the Indian title by purchase could be put into operation.
