Les Sylphides

Inspired by the 1905 visit of Isadora Duncan to , Michael Fokine Germantown Copy Center took the timeless music of Frederic Chopin and created Chopiniana (later renamed “Les Sylphides”). This ballet celebrates the lyrical and poetic qualities of Blanc to express the sublime nature of dance. The dancers at Hope Garden Children’s Ballet Theatre are honored and proud to be able to perform this ballet, and trying their youthful best to be true to the style and historical significance of this piece. “Les Sylphides” is one of the revolutionary ballets of the 20th cen - tury. Firstly, to choreograph to the works of the great masters, such as Chopin, was unheard of at the time. Secondly, there was virtually no abstract, plotless works in the Russian Repertoire, which was character - ized by Petipa’s large scale full-length productions. Les Sylphides” was premiered for the 1909 Paris season by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes and featured and Vaslav Nijin - sky. Of the many innovative works presented by this impresario, this was his favorite.

www.HGCBT.org What is Hope Garden GOLD SPONSOR Children’s Ballet Theatre? Dustin Kimball's Hope Garden Children’s Ballet Theatre (HGCBT) upholds the traditions and Performance history of classical ballet while venturing into the world of contemporary ballet and is generously sponsored by movement—contributing to the education of the young people involved, stretching their minds and explorations into the understanding of movement art, anatomy, Gus & Jenna Creedon musicality, and theater. The HGCBT hopes to extend its solid foundation in the com - munity, teaching and spreading the message of beauty, culture, and the deep roots of Classical Ballet. These young dancers seek to educate and in - spire audiences throughout the Maryland and D.C. region, striving to perform in many venues beyond the semi-annual performances in Poolesville, including hospitals, senior homes, schools, and community settings. HGCBT strives to put on performances that are an exciting, inspiring and magi cal experience, both for the dancers and for the audience. Fulfilling these goals becomes easier as our dancers become more confident and “Thanks, Dustin, accomplished, and they take on more sophisticated roles. Providing a setting that mirrors the quality of the dancing requires funding from outside for all you do!” sources. The rental, purchase and creation of more elaborate costumes, sets and props, the fees for hiring required technical staff and guest performers , the rental of the theater, and the cost of promoting the performances are all elements necessary to creating concerts that match the caliber of these talented dancers. As is traditional with youth ballet, the dancers all pay a fee to participate in these productions. The fees HGCBT collects from its dancers are the lowest in the region , and our hope is to maintain that. This is where our pa - trons, and supporters of art in our region, can help.
