  • Scaramouche and the Commedia Dell'arte
Scaramouche Sibelius’s horror story Eija Kurki © Finnish National Opera and Ballet archives / Tenhovaara Scaramouche. Ballet in 3 scenes; libr. Paul [!] Knudsen; mus. Sibelius; ch. Emilie Walbom. Prod. 12 May 1922, Royal Dan. B., CopenhaGen. The b. tells of a demonic fiddler who seduces an aristocratic lady; afterwards she sees no alternative to killinG him, but she is so haunted by his melody that she dances herself to death. Sibelius composed this, his only b. score, in 1913. Later versions by Lemanis in Riga (1936), R. HiGhtower for de Cuevas B. (1951), and Irja Koskkinen [!] in Helsinki (1955). This is the description of Sibelius’s Scaramouche, Op. 71, in The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Ballet. Initially, however, Sibelius’s Scaramouche was not a ballet but a pantomime. It was completed in 1913, to a Danish text of the same name by Poul Knudsen, with the subtitle ‘Tragic Pantomime’. The title of the work refers to Italian theatre, to the commedia dell’arte Scaramuccia character. Although the title of the work is Scaramouche, its main character is the female dancing role Blondelaine. After Scaramouche was completed, it was then more or less forgotten until it was published five years later, whereupon plans for a performance were constantly being made until it was eventually premièred in 1922. Performances of Scaramouche have 1 attracted little attention, and also Sibelius’s music has remained unknown. It did not become more widely known until the 1990s, when the first full-length recording of this remarkable composition – lasting more than an hour – appeared. Previous research There is very little previous research on Sibelius’s Scaramouche.

The next work on the program was the premiere of It Goes Without Saying, choreographed for HARID by resident choreographer Mark Godden. Set to music by Nico Muhly and rehearsed by Alexey Kulpin, this work stretched the artistic scope of the dancers by requiring them to speak on stage and move in unison to music that is not always melodically driven. • Throw Together a Night of Performances by International
Throw together a night of performances by international dancers, sprinkle in some teenage competition winners’ solos, and call it something cute: That would seem to be the recipe for Youth America Grand Prix’s “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” gala, happening this Thursday and Friday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Except, the name of this annual program is eerily prescient. When you look back at the lists of YAGP medalists from the past 15 years, that “Stars of Tomorrow” moniker is spot-on. They read like something of a Who’s Who of ballet—including several top names who’ve been highlighted in Dance Magazine. Back in 2002, Sarah Lane nabbed the senior bronze medal with an unforgettable performance: After her music stopped 20 seconds into her Paquita variation, she finished the rest in silence. In the audience (which erupted into a spontaneous standing ovation) was American Ballet Theatre artistic director Kevin McKenzie. We ended up putting Lane onDance Magazine‘s cover in June 2007 just before he promoted her to soloist. Jim Nowakowski won the Youth Grand Prix in 2002 before joining Houston Ballet, then took a star turn on “So You Think You Can Dance.” We named him one of Dance Magazine‘s “25 to Watch” this year. That same year, Brooklyn Mack placed third in the classical dance category for senior men. Today, he’s a standout dancer at The Washington Ballet, and partnered Misty Copeland in her first U.S. performance of Swan Lake. Hee Seo took the Grand Prix in 2003.

  • 1St Year Summer Performance
SUMMER PERFORMANCE 2021 LINDEN THEATRE I 1ST YEAR I MONDAY 28 JUNE WELCOME It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our Summer Performance at the Linden Theatre. This has been an extraordinary and unforgettable year of challenge and adaptation for The Royal Ballet School. Today’s performance is a tribute to the resilience and creativity shown by our students and staff throughout that time. Seeing their determination to succeed, separated from each other for so much of the year and unable to train or teach in the studios they love, has been a powerful inspiration. I am delighted that following the sadness of cancelled performances in 2020, we finally have the chance to come together to celebrate their work. I wanted our students to enjoy dancing in front of an audience again, and the best way to do this was to give them as many chances to perform on stage as possible. The School’s teams have, with spectacular effort, put together nine different programmes over 32 performances. Each of the eight year groups will have the chance to dance in their own dedicated performances, culminating in a final collective, socially distanced, performance at the Royal Opera House. I am proud to say that the dedication and hard work of our remarkable community of dancers and teachers mean we can continue to call the School one of the very best in the world. Across this season, dancers of all ages are performing a range of work that shows off the skills they have learnt through their training. Each year the School is fortunate to work with and perform pieces from renowned choreographers and rehearsal directors in preparation for our Summer Performances.
