20.10.2017 EN Official Journal of the European Union L 271/7 COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING REGULATION (EU) 2017/1915 of 19 October 2017 prohibiting the introduction into the Union of specimens of certain species of wild fauna and flora THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Having regard to Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 of 9 December 1996 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein (1), and in particular Article 4(6) thereof, Whereas: (1) The purpose of Regulation (EC) No 338/97 is to protect species of wild fauna and flora and to guarantee their conservation by regulating trade in animal and plant species listed in its Annexes. The species listed in the Annexes include the species set out in the Appendices to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora signed in 1973 (2) (the Convention) as well as species whose conservation status requires that trade from, into and within the Union be regulated or monitored. (2) Article 4(6) of Regulation (EC) No 338/97 provides that the Commission may establish restrictions to the introduction of specimens of certain species into the Union in accordance with the conditions laid down in points (a) to (d) thereof. (3) On the basis of recent information, the Scientific Review Group established pursuant to Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No 338/97 has concluded that the conservation status of certain species listed in Annex B to Regulation (EC) No 338/97 would be seriously jeopardised if their introduction into the Union from certain countries of origin is not prohibited. -

The new toadlet species is probably at least partly fossorial as can be judged from its large and sharp metatarsal tubercle, and seems to lead a secretive or strictly seasonal life since very few adult specimens were collected despite intensive field surveys in the region. The new species differs from all otherScaphiophryne , among other characters, by the absence of a tarsal tubercle and reminds the genus Paradoxophyla in its strongly marbled ventral pattern on belly and hindlimbs, and by its triangular head shape with pointed snout. Introduction Madagascar harbors an extraordinary diversity of am- endemic clade (VAN DER MEIJDEN et al., 2007), (4) the phibians, with currently about 290 described species, and hyperoliid genus Heterixalus, and (5) the ptychadenid many others (at least 130) still waiting to be described species Ptychadena mascareniensis (GLAW & VENCES, (VIEITES et al., 2009). -
Reptiles & Amphibians of Kirindy
REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS OF KIRINDY KIRINDY FOREST is a dry deciduous forest covering about 12,000 ha and is managed by the Centre National de Formation, dʹEtudes et de Recherche en Environnement et Foresterie (CNFEREF). Dry deciduous forests are among the world’s most threatened ecosystems, and in Madagascar they have been reduced to 3 per cent of their original extent. Located in Central Menabe, Kirindy forms part of a conservation priority area and contains several locally endemic animal and plant species. Kirindy supports seven species of lemur and Madagascarʹs largest predator, the fossa. Kirindy’s plants are equally notable and include two species of baobab, as well as the Malagasy endemic hazomalany tree (Hazomalania voyroni). Ninety‐nine per cent of Madagascar’s known amphibians and 95% of Madagascar’s reptiles are endemic. Kirindy Forest has around 50 species of reptiles, including 7 species of chameleons and 11 species of snakes. This guide describes the common amphibians and reptiles that you are likely to see during your stay in Kirindy forest and gives some field notes to help towards their identification. The guide is specifically for use on TBA’s educational courses and not for commercial purposes. This guide would not have been possible without the photos and expertise of Marius Burger. Please note this guide is a work in progress. Further contributions of new photos, ids and descriptions to this guide are appreciated.
