Cortland’s 12 World Series appearances are the most by any Division III school since the division first adopted an eight-team field in 1991. In addition to their national second-place finishes in 2005 and 2010, the Red Dragons also finished third in both 1997 and 1998, fourth in 2007 and 2012, and tied for fifth in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Cortland, led by 15th-year head coach Joe Brown, was seeded first in the eight-team New York Regional. The Red Dragons opened with a 6-1 win over Castleton (Vt.), followed by a 14-5 victory over Farmingdale State, a 3-2 decision against Amherst (Mass.) and a 10-1 win over Kean (N.J.) in the finals. The only season without 30 wins during that stretch was a 29-win season in 2004. * Joe Brown is in his 15th season as the Red Dragons’ head coach after serving as the program’s top assistant coach and pitching coach for seven years. Brown is a 1990 Ithaca College graduate and was a member of the Bombers’ 1988 NCAA Division III championship team. In Brown’s 26 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach at the Division III level, his teams have qualified for NCAA regional play every year and have advanced to 13 World Series. * Head Coach Joe Brown entered the 2014 season with a .783 winning percentage, the best of any active coach nationally in NCAA Division I, II or III with at least 10 years experience and the third-best all-time among all Div. III coaches with 10 years as a head coach. * Cortland won its 32nd State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and its 16th in the last 18 years. The Red Dragons captured the regular-season crown with a 15-3 record and won the conference tournament with three wins in as many games.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

The Boston Red Sox Friday, May 28, 2021 * The Boston Globe Red Sox option struggling outfielder Franchy Cordero to Triple A Worcester Julian McWilliams The Red Sox announced Thursday that they have optioned outfielder Franchy Cordero to Triple A Worcester. Cordero, who was acquired from the Royals as part of the Andrew Benintendi trade in the offseason, came to the Red Sox as a glowing talent with untapped potential. When he made his debut with the Padres in 2017, he was viewed as one of the best prospects in baseball, but injuries and underwhelming play diminished that status. Cordero stayed healthy with the Red Sox, but the subpar play continued. He hit just .179 with one home run in 102 plate appearances and struck out a whopping 36.3 percent of the time. The Red Sox believed they could unlock Cordero’s ability, but for now he has run out of runway with the big league club. Some Triple A time might be good for Cordero, providing him an opportunity to hone his swing and not look so overmatched. Reps at the plate are important, and Cordero doesn’t have many — just 229 plate appearances combined (minors and majors) since the start of 2019. He has struggled mightily to find his swing path, often finding his barrel beneath the baseball. Cordero added to the Red Sox’ organizational depth, but with utility player Danny Santana now on the big league roster and outfielder Jarren Duran lurking at Triple A, it will be up to him to make the adjustments needed so he doesn’t become an afterthought.

Early Pioneers of the Negro Leagues JohnW.Connor by Center for Negro League Baseball Research Dr. Layton Revel Copyright 2017 Brooklyn Royal Giants John W. Connor formed the Brooklyn Royal Giants in 1904. During their first two years the Royal Giants were a good team but did not play at the level that Connor wanted for his team. To take his team to the next level John Connor signed Grant “Homerun” Johnson away from the Philadelphia Giants. Johnson became his starting short stop and the team’s manager. Johnson responded to Connor’s confidence in him on the field by consistently being one of the team’s top hitters and playing flawless defense. In the dugout as the team’s manager, Grant Johnson provided the leadership that would transform the Brooklyn Royal Giants into the best black baseball club in the East. Along with hiring Grant Johnson in 1906, Connor also signed the following players who had a significant impact on improving the ball club: Bill Monroe (2B), Jack Emery (P) and Billy Holland (P/OF).
