Andrews, Schizymenium novoguinense (E. B. Bartram) A. Eddy, three species of Brachymenium, B. alpinum Ochi, B. jilinense T. J. Kop., A. J. Shaw, J.-S. Lou & C. Gao and B. muricola Broth. and Mielichhoferia pusilla (Hook. f. & Wilson) Mitt. are added to the moss flora of Japan. Two new combinations, Schizymenium japonicum (Besch.) Tad. Suzuki and Schizymenium sasaokae (Broth.) Tad. Suzuki are made. Introduction In a catalog of the mosses of Japan, Iwatsuki (2004) listed 9 genera of Bryaceae. In this paper, four genera of Bryaceae are added to the moss flora of Japan and I present information on 12 species of the family in Japan. A key to genera of Bryaceae in Japan is provided. Descriptions, specimens examined, distributions, notes and illustrations of 12 species are included. All collections are deposited in the Herbarium of the Hattori Botanical Laboratory (NICH). The genus Anomobryum Schimp. (Bryopsida, Bryaceae) in Australia. Telopea 9(4) 777–792. The genus Anomobryum has been revised for Australia and five species are recognized: A. auratum (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, A. harriottii (R. Br. bis.) Dixon, Anomobryum sp. (= Bryum argenteum Hedw.), and two new combinations made for species transferred from Bryum: A. lanatum (P. Beauv.) J.R. Spence & H.P. Ramsay, and A. subrotundifolium (A. Jaeger) J.R. Spence & H.P. Ramsay. Keys, descriptions, illustrations and distributions are presented for the species in Australia. Relationships with other genera in the Bryaceae are discussed. Introduction In this study the genus Anomobryum (Bryaceae) has been examined in detail as a contribution for the Flora of Australia. Anomobryum is closely related to the widespread genus Bryum and most bryologists (e.g. Smith 1978, Crum & Anderson 1981, Noguchi 1994, Eddy 1996) consider it a separate genus, although Ochi (1970, 1992) retained it as a subgenus within Bryum. In general Anomobryum is distinguished by its very small size, julaceous stems, and leaves with a weak costa and smooth margins, all features that it shares with the silver Bryum species, such as B. argenteum Hedw. At least two species of Anomobryum are also silver in colouration like B. argenteum and its allies. -

Abstract: A checklist of the mosses (Bryophyta) of the Wet Tropics bioregion, north-east Queensland is presented. Included is an update on the taxonomy of species, listing a total of 408 taxa. The habitat and distribution patterns of species within the area and in Australia, together with information on the phytogeographical affinities of these taxa in related areas beyond Australia, are discussed. Cunninghamia (2004) 8(3): 371–408 Dedication The authors present this work as a tribute to the memory of the late Ilma Stone (1913–2001) and Heinar Streimann (1938–2001), whose work in the area formed the basis for these studies. The work began in the 1980s, between 1984 and 1998 with Ilma Stone, whose taxonomic studies and data from collections made in the area over many years were immeasurable. Heinar Streimann assisted later in the 1990s, with various taxonomic contributions and data from many collections. Without their assistance and knowledge, the work would not have been written. Their deaths in January 2001 and August 2001 respectively were a serious and tragic blow to Australian bryology. LEPTOSTOMACEAE Helen P. Ramsay1 Leptostomaceae Schwägr., in C.L. von Willdenow, Sp. Pl. 5(2): 85 (1830); often cited incorrectly as “Leptostomataceae”. Type: Leptostomum R.Br. Dioicous. Plants small to moderately robust, growing in vivid green to dull green cushions matted by a dense dark brown to rust-red tomentum to form a hard corky pad. Stems erect, simple or branched, held together by a thick tomentum of rhizoids that are dimorphic and either thicker and with a coarsely papillose-scaly surface, or finer and almost smooth. Leaves erect and ±twisted around the stem or erect-spreading when dry, erect-spreading when moist, oblong-oval to ovate, broadly rounded to emarginate or broadly acute, abruptly piliferous; margin entire or rarely somewhat serrulate near apex, when dry mostly reflexed to revolute, unbordered; costa prominent at back, excurrent in a hyaline hairpoint or rarely ending below hairpoint; laminal cells subquadrate or rounded-hexagonal and firm to thick-walled or, less commonly, hexagonal and thin-walled, smooth, somewhat longer and broader towards the base, often thick-walled in the recurved marginal region, not differentiated in the alar region. Perichaetia and perigonia terminal and filiform. Calyptra pale brown, slenderly cucullate, smooth, glabrous. Setae elongate, smooth. Capsules erect or ±inclined, sometimes curved or asymmetrical, oblong-oval or long-symmetrical, small-mouthed, with the neck broadly or long-tapered to the seta, smooth; operculum dome-like or rarely ±flat, not or only minutely apiculate; stomata numerous in neck, superficial. Peristome diplolepidous, double, brilliant white, often fragile or reduced; exostome teeth very short, smooth or papillose; endostome a small membrane; sometimes the exostome and endostome rudimentary and fused. -

Three loci were sampled: chloroplast ribosomal small protein 4, the intronic region of the mitochondrial NADH dehydogenase subunit 5, and partial sequences of the nuclear 26S ribosomal RNA. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses were performed on individual loci and on multilocus data sets. A measure of phylogenetic diversity was calculated and constrasted among major lineages of mosses. We reveal many instances of incongruence among genomic partitions, but, overall, our analyses describe relationships largely congruent with previous studies of the major groups of mosses. Moreover, our greater sampling highlights the possible non-monophyly of many taxonomic families, particularly in the haplolepideous and pleurocarpous mosses. Comparisons of taxic and phylogenetic diversity among genera indicate that the Dicranidae (haplolepideous taxa) include about 15% of moss genera, but nearly 30% of the phylogenetic diversity. -
