Neighbourhood Plan by Alan Liddle- Chair. Stainton & Thornton Parish Council

A new group has been started, lead by the Parish Council, to construct a neighbourhood plan and it already has held two very successful meetings. Although there are around twenty residents in the group, we want the main part of the plan to come from the people who care about the area they live in, in other words you!

A neighbourhood plan is a document put together by local residents to try and influence local government on how they would like to see their area/village develop. If you like it is a reasoned argument “wish list”.

One of the main reasons for constructing a neighbourhood plan was to try and stop/reduce the possibility of further major housing development on green field sites around the villages. If we can’t stop them, we can determine the type and density of houses and where to put them ie all/more bungalows, no apartments, no three storey houses. It is however, not all about housing development. It will also include buses, green spaces, play areas, health and education. Most of all it is how YOU want to see the area develop.

Over the coming weeks we will be putting together a questionnaire asking for your input on what, or not, you would like to see happen. When the questionnaire comes through your letterbox please take the trouble to fill it in and return it.

We are trying to engage with as many residents as possible and to this end, we are starting to use social media to get the message across to as many people as quickly and as economically as possible. If you have a computer and use FACEBOOK or other methods of communication with your friends, then register your interest about the neighbourhood plan by giving your contact details to one of the following:- [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

We still need volunteers to help on the day and also we need gazebos for the event – if you have a gazebo which you would be willing to lend us please get in touch! We hope to see you all there on the day. Ward Councillor’s Report by Cllr David Coupe

• Work has now started on the new Police Safety Hub. The Police hope that they will move in by the middle of next year. • There has again been an upsurge in reported crime (opportunistic break-ins to cars and out buildings). Please ring Cleveland Police 101 (if you see anything suspicious) 999 (urgent or life threatening). • The removal of the bus service from the villages has caused distress and problems, with little prospect of the bus companies reinstating the service in the foreseeable future. This, however, is not the end of the matter. I have attended a number of meetings at the Town Hall and elsewhere and I am working with Councillors from various parties across the south of where we share a common aim to improve the transport for all. Progress has been made and to this end I was hoping that an announcement could be made but unfortunately this has been delayed. The new recently elected Tees Valley Mayor has the power over bus services if he decides to use it. I look forward to having a meeting with him at the earliest opportunity. I will update my Facebook page with any new information. • The work on Strait Lane by both Angela Swift Developments and Taylor Wimpey is now well under way. There have been ongoing problems with noise and traffic as well as mud. These problems are being addressed when they occur. Plans for the apartments are still in the hands of Angela Swift Developments and no further planning application has been made. • The rat problem seems to be under control but we cannot be complacent. If you have any pest problems you should contact . • The Neighbourhood Plan for Stainton & Thornton has attracted a great deal of interest. The meetings held up to now have been very fruitful and a lot of hard work has been put in by the people concerned. You will be given an opportunity to have your say as to how you see the future. • The application to build 3 houses on Upper Farm Thornton was refused by Middlesbrough Council’s Planning Committee. • The date for the Summer Judging for Northumbria in Bloom will be on the afternoon of 12 th July 2017 . The Spring Judging took place on the 20 th April 2017 and I am sure the judges were impressed by the continuing high standards. I would like to take thank all concerned for their continued hard work. I try to keep my Facebook page which is Stainton & Thornton Community as up to date as possible. I usually attend the Saturday Coffee Morning in the Memorial Hall if anyone wishes to bring any problems or concerns, or you can e-mail or telephone me. How to Contact Your Parish Councillors:

The Friends of Stainton and Thornton Green Spaces by Alan Liddle-Chair

Spring has definitely sprung and the bulbs in the quarry and Kell Gate Green have put on a tremendous show over recent months. As we move into summer and the weather picks up, there is still terrific floral interest throughout all our green spaces; bluebells, wild garlic, sweet woodruff, red and white campion. These are just a few of the many wild flowers that are putting in an appearance in the quarry alone.

Over the coming months, we hope, as in previous years, to organise a series of half day events for the children (their friends, parents and grand-parents) to come and learn about the flora and fauna in the immediate green spaces area. These will take place during the school holidays. All are free events and will usually have a fully qualified botanist (from Tees Valley Wild Life Trust) on hand to lead and explain what we find.

The only date that is confirmed so far is Thursday 3rd August 10.00 am entitled Butterflies and Moths. Full details of where to meet etc. will be given nearer the date.

If you would like to keep up to date on events and happenings within the village, make sure you register with Jim Holmes, the Community Council secretary and he sends out weekly What’s On emails, or we now have our own FACEBOOK page. If you are on FACEBOOK, look under the Groups section and type in The Friends of Stainton & Thornton Green Spaces, to keep you up to date with what is happening in and around our green spaces and how to try and keep them as green spaces.

As has been previously mentioned, the Nature Rubbings Trail in Maelor’s Wood is now fully operational and the ten different plaques are throughout the wood are ready and waiting for you to find them. We still have plenty of Trail sheets , so all you need is a crayon and the sheets, some semi decent weather and you can spend a wonderful hour or so enjoying the green space you have right here on your doorstep.

On a somewhat sad note, someone liked our wooden chainsaw owl sculpture in Maelor’s Wood so much, that they came in and CUT it from its base and took it home with them. The theft has been reported to the police, but to date, the bird is still missing from his perch!

If you would like further information about any of our green spaces or would like to get involved or would just like some trail leaflets, then just get in touch and I will do what I can to accommodate your request. Tel:- 01642598234

A year ago, we planted 3 new trees on Strait Lane. All are doing well, but we forgot to publicly thank the person who paid for them and then planted them. Thank you very much, Ronan O'Kennedy! The Friends of Stainton and Thornton Green Spaces

St Peter and St Paul's Church, Stainton in Cleveland

We were surprised and a little sad to hear that Revd Bill Dewing will be leaving us. He will be moving to a new post in the Hillside parishes around Osmotherley. He will be living in Ingleby Arncliffe. Bill has been with us at Stainton and Hilton for 11 years and and although we will miss him we wish him well. His last Sunday with us will be on June 18th when at a Service of Evensong in St Margaret there will be a chance to say our goodbyes. Bill will not be replaced so this will leave our Vicar Vivienne with 3 parishes in her care. There will need to be some changes to service times which will be announced shortly.
