Wesley Music Centre Media Release Wednesday Lunchtime Concert Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet On Wednesday 14th March 2018 from 12.40 to 1.20pm, the Wesley Music Centre Lunchtime Concert series presents Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B Minor (Op 115) with Eloise Fisher (clarinet), Barbara Jane Gilby & Pip Thompson (violin), Lucy Carrigy-Ryan (viola) and Samuel Pyne (cello). Barbara Jane Gilby is a freelance violinist whose activities include education, orchestra, chamber music and solo work. In 2000 she returned to Canberra after more than two decades in USA, Europe and Tasmania. She has numerous recordings in the ABC Classics catalogue including the Aria award-winning Four Seasons by Vivaldi and String concerti of Richard Mills. Eloise Fisher is an Australian-Israeli and Canberra native, and an award winning clarinettist in numerous prestigious competitions, including the Beijing International Music Competition, the Australian Music Foundation in London and the International Competition of UFAM in Paris. She received her Doctorate in Musical Arts from the Juilliard School in New York, studying with renowned clarinetist, Charles Neidich, where she also won the Richard F. French Prize for the outstanding dissertation of her graduating year. In recent years she has performed and taught in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Pip Thompson is a longstanding member of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and many other ensembles around Canberra. A student of Miwako Abe and a graduate of the ANU Canberra School of Music, Pip has performed with groups in both Australia and Eastern Europe. Highlights include recitals in Hungary and Moldova and recent performances of chamber music with Barbara Gilby and friends in Canberra. In 2018 Pip’s busy performance schedule includes performing with both classical ensembles and the Romanian band the Super Rats. She will also appear as a dancer with the Flamenco Centre at the National Folk Festival. Lucy Carrigy-Ryan completed undergraduate studies in Music, Spanish and Law at the ANU. She joined the Canberra Symphony Orchestra in 2010 while also working in legal/policy positions in the public service. In 2013-14, she undertook further music studies as a scholarship holder at the Emilio Balcarce Tango Orchestra School in Argentina, and was also a contracted violist in the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, performing weekly at the Teatro Colón. She moved to Europe in late 2014 to study with Maestro Bruno Giuranna and recently completed a Master of Advanced Studies in Viola Performance in Switzerland under his guidance. She continues to study at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona, Italy. Samuel Payne studied cello with Susan Blake and Julian Smiles at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and with Howard Penny at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. Currently based in Canberra, Samuel teaches cello at Canberra Grammar School and is a regular performer with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, where he is the inaugural recipient of the Betty Beaver AM Cello Chair. Past highlights include playing in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2016 Beethoven Cycle, and touring India in 2015 with the Australian World Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta.
