His hallmark would be clarity of statement in a sophisticated yet comprehensible language characterised by humanity. Although it is not surprising to find such character attributes in a composer and musician, it is astounding that the composer Brett Dean can communicate so directly in a musical language that is unconditionally contemporary. This may be due to the open-mindedness of a man for whom it is not enough to write music for music’s sake but who wants to present to an audience his love of playfulness, pensive reflection and emotional engagement. The spectator experiences this range like a kaleidoscope in the ballet One of a Kind; hundreds and thousands focuses on building a bridge to INTRODUCTION popular music; and Carlo is evocative of the sensibility of the Renaissance. Dean’s compositions Intimate Decisions and Beggars and Angels were inspired by cycles of works of the same title by his wife, the painter Heather Betts. The instrumentation of these pieces could not be more contrasting (solo viola and symphony orchestra), yet they both equally demonstrate the imaginative power of Brett Dean’s music. Wäre er Literat, würde man ihn in die Kategorie des aufmerksamen und engagierten Beobachters einordnen. Seine Markenzeichen wären klare Aussagen bei einer hochartifiziellen aber dennoch verständlichen Sprache, geprägt vom Denken im Sinne der Menschlichkeit. – Überraschend ist nicht, derartige Attribute bei einem Musiker und Komponisten wiederzufinden, verblüffend ist eher, daß eine Musiksprache, die vorbehaltlos der Gegenwart verpflichtet ist, sich durch den Komponisten Brett Dean derartig unmittelbar mitteilt. Das mag mit der Weltoffenheit des Menschen zu tun haben, dem es nicht genug ist, Musik um der Musik willen zu schreiben, sondern der sich seinem Publikum in aller Spielfreude, Nachdenklichkeit und Emotionalität präsentieren will. Kaleidoskopartig erlebt der Zuhörer all dieses in dem Ballett One of a Kind. Focussiert wird der Brückenschlag zur populären Musik in hundreds and thousands, die Sensibilität von Renaissanceklängen in Carlo. Durch gleichnamige Zyklen seiner Frau, der Malerin Heather Betts, inspiriert, entstanden mit Intimate Decisions und Beggars and Angels Werke, die von ihrer Besetzung (Viola solo und großes Orchester) nicht von größerer Polarität sein könnten, aber gleicher- maßen von der imaginären Kraft der Musik Brett Deans zeugen. Reinhold Dusella (English translation: Gloria Custance) INTRODUCTION 1 The Australian composer and violist Brett Dean studied in Brisbane before moving to Germany in 1984 where he was a permanent member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 15 years. Dean returned to Australia in 2000 to concentrate on his growing compositional activities, and his works now attract considerable attention, championed by conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Markus Stenz and Daniel Harding. One of the most internationally performed composers of his generation, much of Dean’s work draws on literary, political or visual stimuli, including a number of BIOGRAPHY compositions inspired by paintings of his partner Heather Betts. Brett Dean began composing in 1988, initially working on film, radio and improvisatory projects. He became established as a composer in his own right through works such as Ariel’s Music, a clarinet concerto which won an award from the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers, the piano quintet Voices of Angels (1996) and Twelve Angry Men (1996) for the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2001 he won the Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize for Winter Songs, and in 2002/3 was Artist in Residence with the Melbourne Symphony and Composer in Residence at the Cheltenham Festival. Brett Dean performs throughout the world as soloist, chamber musician and conductor and has given numerous premieres of solo and chamber works by some of the leading composers of our time. He has also conducted ensembles such as the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Dean’s most widely-known work is Carlo for strings, sampler and tape, inspired by the music of Carlo Gesualdo, which has received over 50 performances. Other scores include Beggars and Angels (1999) commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Pastoral Symphony (2001) written for Ensemble Modern, Testament (2003) for 12 violas of the Berlin Philharmonic and Eclipse (2003) for the Auryn String Quartet, commissioned by the Kölner Philharmonie. Last season the Melbourne Symphony an Markus Stenz premiered Moments of Bliss, an orchestral precursor of his forthcoming opera Bliss, which was awarded ‘Best Composition’ at the 2005 Australian Classical Music Awards. A broad selection of his music has been recorded on labels such as ABC Classics and BIS Records. BIOGRAPHY 2 In April 2005, Brett Dean premiered his Viola Concerto in London as soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra – in 2006/7 he will also perform this work with its co-commissioners, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Sydney Symphony. Recently, the Concertgebouw Orchestra premiered Parteitag, a specially commissioned work for the Holland Festival 2005 involving spatially disparate orchestral groupings and collaborating with video artist Cazerine Barry. Highlights of the 2005/6 season include the world premiere of the orchestral work Komarov’s Fall by the Berlin Philharmonic in March BIOGRAPHY 2006 – the work will also be performed at the Salzburg Festival in August 2006. Dean will be Composer-in-Residence at the Perth Festival, including the premiere of Vexations and Devotions for orchestra and chorus (co-commissioned by the BBC). His new work for cello and voices, Sparge Le Morte, will be given its world premiere in Carnegie Hall, New York. Dean also plays his Viola Concerto with the Hamburg Philharmonic and Estonian National Symphony and performs in a special programme with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, including conducting his own Short Stories. Looking ahead, Dean will write a violin concerto for Frank Peter Zimmermann, a work for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the opera Bliss, based on Peter Carey’s novel of the same name. Brett Dean is published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes / Bote & Bock. As a violist and conductor/composer he is managed by Intermusica. Weitere Werke sind Beggars and Angels (1999), ein Auftragswerk des Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, die für das Ensemble Modern geschriebene Pastoral Symphony (2001), Testament (2003) für die 12 Bratschisten der Berliner Philharmoniker oder, von der Philharmonie Köln in Auftrag gegeben, Eclipse (2003) für das Auryn Quartett.
