Galloway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors College Abstract In my thesis, I am going to delve into the origin of the religion we call Vodou, its influences, and its migration from Haiti to New Orleans from the 1700’s to the early 1800’s with a small focus on the current state of Vodou in New Orleans. I will start with referencing West Africa, and the religion that was brought from West Africa, and combined with Catholicism in order to form Vodou. From there I will discuss the effect a high Catholic population, slavery, and the Haitian Revolution had on the creation of Vodou. I also plan to discuss how Vodou has changed with the change of the state of Catholicism, and slavery in New Orleans. As well as pointing out how Vodou has affected the formation of New Orleans culture, politics, and society. Introduction The term Vodou is derived from the word Vodun which means “spirit/god” in the Fon language spoken by the Fon people of West Africa, and brought to Haiti around the sixteenth century. -

CHRIS-OZOKO, O.A EBEYE and T .P.UFUOMA ABSTRACT Background : The ischiopubic index is calculated by dividing the pubic length by the ischial length and multiplying by 100. It has been said to be one of the parameters affecting the pelvic inlet and this is of interest to obstetricians and anatomic anthropologists. Objectives : To determine and compare the pubic length, ischial length and ischiopubic index among the males and females of Isoko and Bini ethnic groups of Nigeria. Design : A retrospective cross sectional study. Setting: University of Benin teaching hospital (UBTH), Irrua Specialist teaching hospital (ISTH) and Eku Baptist Hospital. Subjects: Four hundred antero-posterior radiographs ; two hundred for the Isoko (males 105 and females 95) and two hundred also for the Bini (males 110 and females 90) adult pelvis in the age range of 18 – 65 years were evaluated. Results : Pubic length, ischial length, and ischiopubic index were measured. The mean pubic length, mean ischial length and mean ischiopubic index of Isoko males are respectively (mm) 78.42±3.40,69.41±5.10, 75.2-97.5, 87.52 ±1.30. -

In determining the parent language, the descriptions of the various components (i.e. clans and ethnic groups) of Kanuri and Kanembu are given as a first basis and the relation of each dialect of Kanuri and Kanembu to the other (i.e. dialect contiguity) is demonstrated as a second basis. Taking into consideration the sociolinguistic background of both Kanuri and Kanembu, the brief history of their divergence, the strong contention of the Borno Ulama and the dialect contiguity of the data presented, the paper concludes that Kanuri and Kanembu are initially one and the same language with ancient classical Kanembu being the parent language. Kanembu-Kanuri relationship: a proposal Introduction The close genetic relationship of a group of languages referred to as Saharan, was recognised about one and a half centuries ago. This was evident in BARTH (1965), NACHTIGAL (1987), LUKAS (1951), TUCKER and BRYAN (1956), GREENBERG (1966) and CYFFER (1981, 1990, 1991). Based on the genetic classification model of LUKAS (1951), GREENBERG (1966), PETRACEK (1966, 1978 and 1979) and CYFFER (1981 and 1990), the Saharan languages can be modelled as fig. 1 below. 1 I am grateful to the following colleagues for their academic criticisms/contributions which brought the paper to its present stage: A. -
Igala People
Igala people The Brazilian-designed Volkswagen Brasilia was sold in Nigeria as the Igala. The name of the car was derived from the Yoruba word for antelope "ìgalà" and has no connection with the Igala ethnic group. Igala are an ethnic group of Nigeria. Igala practice a number of different religions, including animism, Christianity, and Islam. The home of the Igala people is situated east of the river Niger and Benue confluence and astride the Niger in Lokoja, Kogi state of Nigeria. The area is approximately between latitude 6°30 and 8°40 north and longitude 6°30 and 7°40 east and covers an area of about 13,665 square kilometers (Oguagha P.A 1981) The Igala population is estimated at two million, they can also be found in Delta, Anambra and Edo States of Nigeria. The Igala language is closely related to the Yoruba and Itsekiri languages. In Igala tradition, infants from some parts of the kingdom, like Ankpa receive three deep horizontal cuts on each side of the face, slightly above the corners of their mouths, as a way of identifying each other. However, this practice is becoming less common. The Igalas are ruled by a father figure called the Attah. The word Attah means 'Father' and the full title of the ruler is 'Attah Igala', meaning, the Father of Igalas (the Igala word for King is Onu). Among the most revered Attahs of the Igala kingdom are Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko and Atta Ameh Oboni. According to oral tradition, Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko offered his most beloved daughter, Inikpi to ensure that the Igalas win a war of liberation from the Jukuns' dominance. -

Marriage in Africa is a union between a man and a woman (monogamy) or mainly between a man and women (polygyny), or between a woman and men (polyandry), though this is very rare. In some cases it may be serial polygyny or polyandry, i.e. the case of marrying more than one wife or husband, but always after divorce. Marriage just like other institutions in Africa has rites of passage in which those who intend to enter into it must pass through. Every culture has a sense of peculiarity as to the way in which it approaches this matter. The Efik people are not an exception to this. The question that may be asked is, how gender-balanced are these rites? The Efik people claim to have gender equality, but is this reflected in her marriage rites? Rites are symbolisms of what the actual institution which those rites represent. It is in the light of this that this paper using gender theory critically looked at the Efik traditional marriage rites from gender perspective. The paper realized that, among the Efik people’s traditional marriage rites, there is gender imbalance. It proffers ways of having gender balance in Efik traditional marriage rites. Apart from adding a voice to the cry for gender equality and equity, it provides scholarship a resource material needed for Efik ethnographic study. -

Bakassi The Oron perspective Page 1 of 4 Bakassi: The Oron perspective By Edet Uno Leader of the Oron People's Rights Movement AS an Oron man, this analysis of my people 's viewpoints on the Bakassi issue will almost totally ignore the technicalities of the International Court's study and the verdict derived therefrom. My articulation will depart, essentially, from commonsense to the extent of its validity as the basis of all scientific discourse I will route the argument precisely and specifically to answer some pertinent questions most of them fallacious - that have been raised by some key interests on the problem. Right from the beginning some Oron indigenes knew Nigeira had a bad case. And I told this to many of my friends from other parts of the country. If you are a member of the Oron elite or a fisherman or a labourer in one of the hundreds of Cameroonian plantations, where hundreds of thousands of Nigerians make a living from their Cameroonian landlords, the International Court of Justice judgement on the so-called Bakassi Peninsula would show how far the State can go in the pursuit of its interest. It shows the complex nakedness of Nigeria's internal dynamics and the forces governing relationships among its myriad nationalities. It shows the crass inefficiency of those who control the apparatus of power. And above all, it demonstrates the ignorance and falsehood which have been the crucial factor in Nigeria's inability to integrate as an autonomous state that, as a rule, must take all sections of the community and individuals with an objective sense of equity and justice. -

The contentious politics literature suggest that protest campaigns demobilize as a consequence of the polarization between radical and moderate protesters. In this study, we offer a different causal mechanism and argue that protest campaigns can demobilize before such indiscriminate repression. Moreover, states can prevent the subsequent radicalization of a protest campaign followed by harsh repression by coopting the radicals and the remaining moderate elites while continuing to use repression to prevent collective action. Our conclusion assesses how relations between extractive industry firms and their local host communities have or have not changed in the twenty years since the hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995. EMERGING ISSUES IN AFRICAN MUSIC ACADEMIA: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE Nnamdi C. Onuora-Oguno, Ph.D. Introduction Music is germane to the life of Africans, such that every social activity in their lives is accompanied by some kind of music. Many theses have been written on the subject of parental prejudice to the formal study of music in African society. The belief was that the average parent cannot conjecture that a child will go to school to study an art which principally exists and is practiced by rote learning and oral tradition. The introduction of Western Music Education has changed all that. Issues have arisen and have been tackled by scholars of past and present generations. This paper is an overview of what the writer considers issues emanating in the new millennium (2000 – 2016). The participant observatory- method based on empiricism as an active player in the music academia was used, using the Nigerian music academia as case study. Issues were identified, solutions were proffered, projections and possible solutions were suggested towards making the African music academia better. The writer identified eight plagues that could jeopardize the growth of the music academia in Nigeria in the new millennium if treated with kids‟ glove. Ironically, most of the plagues identified are more intrinsic than extrinsic to the corpus of music academia in Nigeria. We must look at ourselves more closely before laying blames on non-music scholars. Below are some issues of concern. Computer Related Issues The basic deficiencies of the Nigerian music academia are issues arising from deficiency or lack of knowledge of the Information Communication Technology (ICT).
