ENGLISH EXTENSION I Crime Genre Essay: “Genre sets a framework of conventions. How useful is it to understand texts in terms of genre? Are texts more engaging when they conform to the conventions, or when they challenge and play with conventions?” “Genres offer an important way of framing texts which assists comprehension. Genre knowledge orientates competent readers of the genre towards appropriate attitudes, assumptions and expectations about a text which are useful in making sense of it. Indeed, one way of defining genre is as a ‘set of expectations.’” (Neale, 1980) The crime fiction genre, which began during the Victorian Era, has adapted over time to fit societal expectations, changing as manner of engaging an audience. Victorian text The Manor House Mystery by J.S. Fletcher may be classified as an archetypal crime fiction text, conforming to conventions whilst The Skull beneath the Skin by P.D. James, The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard and Capote directed by Bennet Miller challenge and subvert conventions. The altering of conventions is an engaging element of modern crime fiction, and has somewhat, become a convention itself. Genre, Roland Barthes argues, is “a set of constitutive conventions and codes, altering from age to age, but shared by a kind of implicit contract between writer and reader” thus meaning it is “ultimately an abstract conception rather than something that exists empirically in the world.”(Jane Feuer, 1992) The classification of literary works is shaped – and shapes – culture, attitude and societal influence. The crime fiction genre evolved following the Industrial Revolution when anxiety grew within the expanding cities about the frequency of criminal activity. -

Molinaro My thesis sketches a constellation of parodic Works Within the contemporary Spanish author Javier Tomeo's (1932-2013) immense literary universe. These novels include El discutido testamento de Gastón de Puyparlier (1990), Preparativos de viaje (1996), La noche del lobo (2006), Constructores de monstruos (2013), El cazador de leones (1987), and Los amantes de silicona (2008). It is my contention that the Aragonese author repeatedly incorporates and reconfigures the conventions of genres and sub-genres of popular literature and film in order to critique the proliferation of mass culture in Spain during his career as a writer. -

Ellery Queen Master Detective
Ellery Queen Master Detective Ellery Queen was one of two brainchildren of the team of cousins, Fred Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Dannay and Lee entered a writing contest, envisioning a stuffed‐shirt author called Ellery Queen who solved mysteries and then wrote about them. Queen relied on his keen powers of observation and deduction, being a Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rolled into one. But just as Holmes needed his Watson ‐‐ a character with whom the average reader could identify ‐‐ the character Ellery Queen had his father, Inspector Richard Queen, who not only served in that function but also gave Ellery the access he needed to poke his nose into police business. Dannay and Lee chose the pseudonym of Ellery Queen as their (first) writing moniker, for it was only natural ‐‐ since the character Ellery was writing mysteries ‐‐ that their mysteries should be the ones that Ellery Queen wrote. They placed first in the contest, and their first novel was accepted and published by Frederick Stokes. Stokes would go on to release over a dozen "Ellery Queen" publications. At the beginning, "Ellery Queen" the author was marketed as a secret identity. Ellery Queen (actually one of the cousins, usually Dannay) would appear in public masked, as though he were protecting his identity. The buying public ate it up, and so the cousins did it again. By 1932 they had created "Barnaby Ross," whose existence had been foreshadowed by two comments in Queen novels. Barnaby Ross composed four novels about aging actor Drury Lane. After it was revealed that "Barnaby Ross is really Ellery Queen," the novels were reissued bearing the Queen name. -

Edgar Wallace (1875–1932) Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace eða bara Edgar Wallace eins og hann kallaði sig var enskur rithöfundur, blaðamaður og handritshöfundur sem skrifaði 175 skáldsögur, 24 leikrit og fjölda greina í blöð og tímarit. Þá er búið að gera vel á annað hundruð kvikmyndir eftir sögum hans og er enn að bætast við þá tölu. Munu það vera fleiri kvikmyndir en gerðar hafa verið eftir sögum nokkurs annars höfundar. Til marks um vinsældir hans, þá vildi einn útgefandi bóka hans meina að fjórðungur allra bóka sem lesnar voru á Englandi á þriðja áratug 20. aldar væru eftir hann. Í dag er Wallace kannski helst kunnur fyrir að hafa í samvinnu við Draycott Dell skrifað handritið að fyrstu kvikmyndinni um King Kong sem og smásöguna sem handritið og síðar skáldsagan byggir á. Með þekktum bókum eftir Wallace má nefna The Four Just Men, The Ringer og The Door with the Seven Locks (Dyrnar með lásunum sjö). Edgar Wallace fæddist í London 1. apríl árið 1875. Foreldrar hans voru leikarar, Richard Horatio Edgar (sem vissi reyndar aldrei af tilvist hans) og Mary Jane Blair. Mary hafði misst mann sinn árið 1868 og átti eina dóttur fyrir þegar hún varð ófrísk af Edgar eiginlega fyrir slysni. Störfuðu þau Richard bæði hjá sama leikflokki sem rekinn var af móður Richards. Til að forðast hneyksli lét Mary engan vita af óléttunni og fékk leyfi um tíma frá hópnum til að geta eignast barnið í kyrrþey. Bað hún ljósmóðurina sem stundaði hana að finna fyrir sig fólk sem væri tilbúið að fóstra soninn strax eftir fæðingu gegn greiðslum.
