Since 1992, when the artist worked with the environmental movement in the Czech Republic, Reeve's work has engaged with revealing and challenging the ways in which we 'know' and relate to 'nature'. Her work methodology is to situate her exploration and the resulting 'event of thought' within liminality (i.e. the state of being on the threshold; a no man's land where the 'voice' desires to climb out of cultural patterns).

  • Sherlock Gnomes”
Production Information PARAMOUNT PICTURES and METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER PICTURES present A ROCKET PICTURES Production, “SHERLOCK GNOMES”. Executive produced by Sir Elton John. Produced by Steve Hamilton Shaw, David Furnish, and Carolyn Soper. Based on characters by Rob Sprackling & John Smith, Andy Riley & Kevin Cecil, Keely Asbury, and Steve Hamilton Shaw. Story by Andy Riley & Kevin Cecil and Emily Dee Cook & Kathy Greenburg. Screenplay by Ben Zazove. Directed by John Stevenson. The beloved garden gnomes from GNOMEO AND JULIET are back for a whole new adventure in London. When Gnomeo and Juliet first arrive in the city with their friends and family, their biggest concern is getting their new garden ready for spring. However, they soon discover that someone is kidnapping garden gnomes all over London. When Gnomeo and Juliet return home to find that everyone in their garden is missing – there’s only one gnome to call… SHERLOCK GNOMES. The famous detective and sworn protector of London’s garden gnomes arrives with his sidekick Watson to investigate the case. The mystery will lead our gnomes on a rollicking adventure where they will meet all new ornaments and explore an undiscovered side of the city. This action-packed sequel features the voices of returning cast, James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Stephen Merchant and Ozzy Osbourne, plus Johnny Depp as Sherlock Gnomes, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Watson and Mary J. Blige as Irene. GNOMES AWAY FROM HOME Someone is stealing London’s yard ornaments, and there’s only one detective small enough for a mystery this big: Sherlock Gnomes. “From the beginning, it was integral to a sequel that we embrace a different classic story and ‘gnomify’ it,” says producer STEVE HAMILTON SHAW.

  • Bird Introductions
chapter 18 Bird Introductions Kristopher Poole Introduction he variety of birdlife in Britain today results largely from a process of extinction and arrival stretching over 2500 years. Humans have been complicit in many of these changes, several species disappearing through predation (Serjeantson, this volume), whilst over three hundred have been intentionally imported (Dudley et al. 2006). Although many of these species have had little impact on peoples’ lives, others have developed closer relationships with humans, a statement perhaps more true of the Galliformes than any other order. his chapter focuses on the most notable Galliformes: domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus), common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), blue peafowl (Pavo cristatus), turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) and helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris). Understanding the timing and motivations behind each arrival is complicated by problems of identiication in the archaeological (they are osteologically similar and the remains of domestic fowl and pheasant, and peafowl and turkey are notoriously diicult to separate), documentary and iconographic records. It is only by combining these sources that we can begin to tell the story of how these particular birds became so important in human history. Domestic fowl Although widely used for food today, domestic fowl may initially have been more important as sacriicial and ighting birds (Simoons 1994, 145). Yalden and Albarella (2009, 99–102) have recently summarised archaeological and genetic evidence for the species, which suggests that these birds were irst domesticated in south-east Asia in the sixth millennium BC, from where they spread gradually, perhaps through southern Russia, to south-east Europe (Figure 41). According to Benecke (1993, 21) domestic fowl arrived in the Mediterranean around the eighth century BC, and central Europe by the seventh century BC.

  • Little Britain’S Fictional Teenage Single Mother, Vicky Pollard
Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Sharon Lockyer School of Social Sciences Brunel University Uxbridge Middlesex UB8 3PH, UK Tel: +44(0)1895 267373 Email: [email protected] Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Abstract British television comedy has often ridiculed the complexities and characteristics of social class structures and identities. In recent years poor white socially marginalised groups, now popularly referred to as “chavs”, have become a prevalent comedy target. One of the most popular and controversial television “comedy chavs” is Little Britain’s fictional teenage single mother, Vicky Pollard. This paper examines the representation of Vicky Pollard in light of contemporary widespread abuse of the white working class. Highlighting the polysemic and ambivalent nature of Vicky Pollard’s representation, the paper argues that whilst Little Britain’s characterisation of Vicky Pollard largely contributes to contemporary widespread demonization of the working class, there are moments within Little Britain when a more sympathetic tone towards the poor working class may be read, and where chav identities are used to ridicule the pretensions, superficiality, and falsity of middle-class identities. The paper concludes that television comedy has been, and continues to be, a significant vehicle through which serious concerns, anxieties, and questions about social class and class identities are discursively constructed and contested. Keywords: chavs; social class; television comedy; Little Britain; Vicky Pollard; interpretive diversity; representation 2 Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Introduction Sending up the dynamics and intricacies of the British class system has been a central ingredient of British television comedy since the 1950s.

Introduction: The Context for the Study • This study has been commissioned by One North East, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for the North East of England. It examines the relationship between city regions and rural areas. In particular, the study examines the links between two city regions in the North East region (Tyne & Wear and Tees Valley) and the rural areas within and surrounding them. It identifies the types of linkages and available data sources to quantify the scale of flows. It comments on the current economic significance of such linkages and suggests ways in which their beneficial effects might be enhanced. • There has been growing interest in the concept of city regions amongst UK urban and regional development specialists in recent years. Academic researchers have long been interested in developing functionally-based definitions of different geographical areas, such as ‘functional urban regions’, ‘daily urban systems’ and ‘local labour market areas’.
