! MAKE NOISE WALES 2017 One of the UK’s most original music and recycling projects returns to Wales in 2017 Following last year’s first ever Welsh tour (which was nominated for two National Recycling Awards) Make Noise Wales returns in 2017 for dates in Blackwood, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tydfil and Talgarth. This time out we’re delighted to welcome Sweet Baboo as our very special guest plus supporting slots from Heavenly artist and former Welsh Music Prize nominee H.Hawkline and one of Wales’ most exciting new acts Boy Azooga. The Make Noise manifesto remains the same: programming exciting and innovative music events and making entry 100% FREE in exchange for a piece of electrical recycling. Party goers just need to bring something to hand over at the door; a broken mobile phone, hairdryer or laptop - anything with a plug or a battery! Since it began, Make Noise has packed out venues all round the UK and recycled tonnes of electronic waste. The first date takes place on Saturday 16th September when Make Noise lands in Blackwood for the final night of the Velvet Coalmine Festival. This special Make Noise event at local venue the Black Lion will be a closing party for the festival and will feature live sets live sets from the tour guests and a DJ set from the Heavenly Jukebox. Following the launch Make Noise will head to Merthyr Tydfil’s Redhouse on Saturday 7th October for a special all ages daytime show, the Ebbw Vale Institute on Friday 13th October and finishing up in one of the country’s most unique small venues, The Tabernacle in Talgarth (14th October) owned and run by music industry leg- end Alan Mcgee. - - All the events are due to a local authority regional WEEE recycling contract that ERP UK deliver for nine Welsh local authorities. This contract is part of a collaborative arrangement under the South Wales Waste Management Group co-ordinated by Resource Efficiency Wales Ltd. James Kay, South Wales Regional Waste Co-ordinator for REW Ltd said: “Four more Welsh local authorities in the SWWMG are combining to collaborate in another Make Noise Wales e-waste recycling live music tour with European Recycling Platform and Heavenly Recordings! Building on the 2016 tour that was successful in raising awareness of small electrical domestic appliances recycling to huge audiences across South Wales, Make Noise Wales is back and in new locations. Typically, many broken electrical items get put in the bin when they can be recycled by local authorities at local collection points such as Household Waste Recycling Cen- tres. You can bring along any electrical item smaller than a microwave, or that has a plug or bat- tery in it and get free entry to the Make Noise Wales 2017 gigs. For more information on tour dates please visit www.resourceefficiencywales.co.uk/events.html” * Sweet Baboo Sweet Baboo is Stephen Black, a native of the north Wales countryside (born in Trefriw, near Snowdonia; now Cardiff-based) and a single-minded, idiosyncratic singer. Black possesses an ear for a sparkling melody, a restless soul, and a gift for a deft lyrical turn – from darkly funny to pier- cingly tender, twinklingly boastful to deliciously self-deprecating. Black's productivity is all the more remarkable given his extra-curricular activities which have seen him working with an ever-growing array of musicians. Black has played on albums by Cate Le Bon, Slow Club and H. Hawkline, and has been a regular part of the touring line-up for all three bands. He has also performed with and produced Euros Childs, The Pictish Trail, The Voluntary Butler Scheme, Islet and Spencer McGarry Season and collaborated onstage and in the studio with Gruff Rhys. Black embarks on a new mission on ‘Wild Imagination’ (his fifth album, released this year on Mos- hi Moshi) to find the perfect pick-me-up antidote to the winter of our discontent. The result is a bright, wry, melodically buoyant and sweetly melancholy tonic from the North Wales singer: a tribu- te to the joys of travel and the warming return home alike. “I think everyone agrees 2016 was a pretty shitty year,” Black explains. “I kept thinking about my son (he’s nearly 3) and wanting to protect him from the world, so I decided to try and make an al- bum full of positivity because that’s what I know I can do. And at the moment, I don’t know what else to suggest.” www.sweetbaboo.co.uk H.Hawkline Huw Evans, also known as H.Hawkline, is a Welsh singer-songwriter and radio and television pre- senter, formerly based in Cardiff and now working in Los Angeles. He performs in both English and Welsh. His new album, I Romanticize (like its predecessor and Heavenly Recordings debut, 2015’s In The Pink Of Condition), was recorded at Samur Khouja’s Seahorse Sound studio in Los Angeles with all the lyrics written and then vocals recorded in Narberth in west Wales. “Some words, as with their meaning, are unavoidable - ‘love’, ’goodbye’, ‘time', 'you', – but you can at least try and dress them up in some new clothes.” Co-produced by Samur, Huw and Cate Le Bon, who also forms part of the quartet who appear on the record along with Josiah Steinbrick – LA composer and pro- ducer – and Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa. “They were the absolute best people for the job, and I also happen to be lucky enough to call them friends. Whilst playing drums in Charlotte Church’ Pop Dungeon under the pseudonym “Bongo Fury” and other Cardiff bands such as Keys and Monico Blonde, Davey began writing his own music and recording it round his mate Dr Ed Boogie’s house. He re- cruited friends Daf, Dylan and Sam to form the four headed instrument swapping psychedlic dance rock out- fit known as Boy Azooga. Their songs are packed with a love of all kinds of music from The Beach Boys, Sly and The Family Stone, Caribou, Black Sabbath, William Onyeabor, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wiz- ard, Beastie Boys, Can, Outkast, Van McCoy, Ty Segal and so much much more. They hope to see you at a gig soon and will have a maraca for you to shake. www.facebook.com/BoyAzooga * Make Noise started in 2010, a unique partnership between European Recycling Platform (ERP) and Heavenly Recordings, the project has toured the country promoting the importance of recy- cling WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) to 18-25 year olds with help from the UK’s top DJs and producers. Bestival founder Rob Da Bank played the very first party alongside Jackmaster in London and since then The 2 Bears, Radio One’s Benji B, Boddika, JETS, Sec- ondCity, Citizen, Martelo, Green-money, Kidnap Kid, DJ Die and many more have all performed at Make Noise events up and down the UK. ERP is one of the UK's leading e-waste, batteries and packaging recycling schemes. Producers of electronic goods and batteries work with registered recycling schemes, such as ERP, to collect and treat WEEE and waste batteries on their behalf. ERP members include Electrolux, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Sony. Resource Efficiency Wales Ltd are the managing organisation that facilitates the South Wales Waste Management Group. The SWWMG is a group of thirteen collaborating local authorities, nine of which are participants in a regional WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme contract. The contract is led by the local authority of Rhondda Cynon Taff, and includes Blaenau Gwent, Caer- philly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport and Powys. Heavenly Recordings have been putting out records since 1991 and celebrated their 25th year as a label in 2015. Heavenly has worked with the Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne, Temples, Doves, The Magic Numbers, TOY and many more as well as being involved in the London night life institution, The Social.
