He is credited with many innovations that transformed the movie business, most notably, the creation of the multiplex cinema and the invention of the arm-rest cup holder. Purpose-built, multiple- screen, cinema entertainment complexes became Parkway Twin Theatres, the first Multiplex, The dominant force in exhibition in the late 20th century, growing a $2B annual industry in opened in Kansas City on July 12, 1963 1975 to a $6B industry in 1997. He was a proud son of Kansas City, where AMC is based. Welcome Back - Looking Forward to a Brighter 2021 As theatres begin to re-open and the industry comes back to life, we take stock of the positive signs of what lies ahead. The movie business has been interrupted, but it is not broken. Despite the significant challenges this year, when new movies return to theatres, audiences will follow. When circumstances permit, people are going to say to themselves, “I have been stuck at home for months watching streaming, and I’m tired of that.     For Exhibitors October 26, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 140 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising In 1926, Warner Bros. Pictures, then a small, struggling studio, began a partnership with the Vitaphone Corporation to use its sound-on-disc technology to produce films with synchronized playback of sound with visual images. WB made a series of one-reel sound short films to demonstrate (Click to Play) the technology, playing them before other features. Audiences responded so enthusiastically that Warner Bros. was convinced to bet big on talking motion pictures as the next big thing in movies. Their first feature-length film to use the Vitaphone system was The Jazz Singer, which premiered at Warners’ Theatre in New York on October 6, 1928. It starred Al Jolson, a famous singer and Broadway star of the day. The film included two short scenes in which Jolson’s spoken word was synchronized to the picture, delivering life-like dialog in real-time that thrilled movie goers, comparable to the most immersive, multi-sensory special effects in today’s cinema.     STEVEN PRICE COMPOSER Steven Price is an Academy Award winning film composer. His unique, story-driven approach to the craft of film scoring has seen him work on some of the most innovative productions of recent years. From Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity to Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Steven’s individualistic scores seek to enhance the ideas and images of great filmmakers in truly bespoke ways. Steven’s diverse music reflects the wide range of movie and television projects he has been involved with. Beginning his career in the late 1990s, he contributed to productions such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Batman Begins, before making his scoring debut in 2011 with Joe Cornish’s inner-city horror comedy, Attack the Block. Recent years have seen him compose distinctive scores for Claire McCarthy’s reimagining of Hamlet, Ophelia, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and the Paramount Animation Wonder Park. From his incorporation of original WW2 tanks in the percussion of the Brad Pitt starring Fury to the wind instrument driven score created for Tom Harper’s The Aeronauts, the music created for each production seeks to give each story its unique voice, the result of an experimental and collaborative process. His work in the Natural History realm, working alongside Sir David Attenborough on The Hunt, (for which Steven won a Bafta), and the Netflix Original Our Planet, (nominated for two score Emmys), will continue in 2020 with a new live arena spectacular, Our Planet Live in Concert, the premiere for which will be held at London’s O2 Arena in October 2020.
