    Esoteric, Chan and vinaya ties in Tang Buddhism The ordination platform of the Huishan monastery on Mount Song in the religious policy of Emperor Daizong Abstract This paper explores the reconstruction of the ordination platform in the Huishan monastery 會 善寺 on Mount Song in 767 in the context of the reinforcement of pro-Buddhist policies at the court of Emperor Daizong 代宗 (r. 762–779). The vinaya monks and state officials who engaged in this platform’s reconstruction are identified as associates of two prominent monastic figures: Amoghavajra (Bukong jin’gang 不空金剛; 704–774), an Esoteric leader at the imperial court; and Songshan Puji 嵩山普寂 (651–739), regarded as the seventh patriarch in the Northern Chan tradition. The key roles played by disciples of these two masters in the reconstruction of the Huishan platform attest to significant congruence in ritual practices between proponents of the Esoteric and Chan groups in Tang dynasty China, primarily in the areas of precept conferral and monastic ordination. Keywords Mount Song, Huishan monastery, Northern Chan, Esoteric Buddhism, vinaya, precept conferral Introduction During the Tang dynasty, the reign of Emperor Daizong 代宗 (r. 762–779) was second only to the reign of Empress Wu Zetian 武則天 (r. 690–705) in terms of imperial patronage of Buddhism. Daizong assumed the role of universal Buddhist monarch (cakravartin) and granted the Buddhist saṅgha and its foremost leader Amoghavajra (Ch. Bukong jin’gang 不空金剛; 704–774) an unprecedented amount of power.1 In 767, at the start of a new era that Daizong named Dali 大曆 (Grand Reign), many large-scale Buddhist projects were realized under the 1 Amoghavajra, an Esoteric master of allegedly Sogdian origin, became a paramount Buddhist leader at the imperial court during a period of highly militarized political turbulence in the territorial centre of the Tang Empire following the rebellion of General An Lushan 安祿山 (703–757) in 755.

Foguangsi on Mount Wutai: Architecture of Politics and Religion Abstract Foguangsi (Monastery of Buddha’s Radiance) is a monastic complex that stands on a high terrace on a mountainside, in the southern ranges of Mount Wutai, located in present-day Shanxi province. The mountain range of Wutai has long been regarded as the sacred abode of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī and a prominent center of the Avataṃsaka School. Among the monasteries that have dotted its landscape, Foguangsi is arguably one of the best-known sites that were frequented by pilgrims. The er discovery of Foguangsi by modern scholars in the early 20th century has been considered a “crowning moment in the modern search for China’s ancient architecture”. Most notably, the Buddha Hall, which was erected in the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), was seen as the ideal of a “vigorous style” of its time, and an embodiment of an architectural achievement at the peak of Chinese civilization.

Abstract As the Tang dynasty rose to power and expanded into the present-day provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, an endemic problem of troublesome frontier officials appeared along the border prefectures. Modern scholars have largely embraced Chinese historical scholarship believing that the lawlessness and remoteness of these southwestern border regions bred immoral, corrupt, and violent officials. Such observations fail to understand the southwest as a dynamic region that exposed assigned border officials to manage areas containing hardship, war, and unreceptive aboriginal tribes. Instead, the ability to act as an “effective” official, that is to bring peace domestically and abroad, reflected less the personal characteristics of an official and rather the relationship these officials had with the local native tribes. Evidence suggests that Tang, Tibetan, and Nanzhao hegemony along the southwestern border regions fluctuated according to which state currently possessed the allegiance of the native tribesmen. As protectors and maintainers of the roads, states possessing the allegiance of the local peoples possessed a tactical advantage, resulting in ongoing attacks and raids into the border prefectures by China’s rivals.

Evelyne MESNIL 1. Introduction In documents from the Tang (618-907), Five Dynasties (907-960) and Northern (960-1127) and Southern Song (1127-1279), the Monastery Dashengcisi 大聖慈寺, is a recurrent theme in relation to politics as well as religion and art history. Its tremendous scale and crucial role, not only in Shu 蜀 (modern Sichuan Province), the strategic region in which it is located, but throughout the Chinese Empire is clearly documented. Nevertheless, between the 13th and 15th centuries nearly all of its treasures vanished, and its restoration and study were long neglected. Only recently has awareness of its cultural value re-emerged and has it become the object of renewed interest and research. In 1981, its vestiges were classified as Protected Cultural Properties. Although its restoration and study of its cultural, political and religious significances were long neglected, a few researchers have begun to analyze its various aspects. The most extensive work of Wang Weiming’s 王衛明 takes mainly a philological, iconographic and aesthetic approach to its Buddhist paintings. While working on my doctorate on Shu Kingdom painting, I became particularly interested in this monastery, because it was one of the most important depositories of that era. Between 774 and 780 in Chengdu, then known as Yizhou, the Lidai fabao ji [Record of the Dharma-Jewel Through the Generations] was compiled to champion the ideas and lineage of Wuzhu (714-774), a Chan Buddhist monk who founded the short-lived Baotang “school”. Although long lost, the text has been discovered at Dunhuang in several copies in Chinese and in a number of partial Tibetan translations. Produced in Sichuan, it was attacked by monks with roots in Sichuan, Shenqing (d. 814) of Zizhou and Zongmi (780-841), for falsifications of Wuzhu’s Chan genealogy and “history” and for an antinomianism that discarded the key forms of Buddhist monasticism. Despite the denunciations, this text exerted a covert influence on the development of elements of what came to be mainstream Chan, and it possibly contributed to the introduction and ultimate rejection of Chan in Tibet.

Cambridge, MA and London, England: Harvard University Asia Center, 2009. Pp. xx + 506. $49.95/£36.95. The year 2010 marked the hundredth anniversary of the publication of the first great monograph on Chinese religious topography, Le T’ai chan: Essai de monographie d’un culte chinois by Édouard Chavannes (1865–1918). The work under review, published one year earlier than this centenary, gives full credit to the inspiration provided by the French savant’s pioneering study, and cites the considered judgement of Michael Loewe and Edward L. Shaughnessy that it was “modern Western Sinology’s first great original achievement” (p. 5). A century of further research has certainly allowed James Robson to bring to his own outstanding contribution to the genre new levels of sophistication and synthesis, so that this volume in its turn also marks a significant milestone in our studies. What have we learned? What is there still to learn? As the author—and his family—bid a relieved farewell to Nanyue, letting its “peaks recede into the distance” (p. xi), the rest of us, less accomplished in the conquest of high places, may seem to see through the mists of the summit achieved by this study further shapes looming into view. Are there further crags to scale, or are these illusions? A browse through Power of Place prompts a number of thoughts that may be worth sharing, though of course what follows should not in any sense be seen as a substitute for a careful reading of the book itself.
