You will find a bit of everything here: from the latest news to answers to some of the questions you have always wanted to ask. As you might imagine, I get a lot of emails regarding Grey Gardens. The obvious answer would be that the two Edies are characters that no novelist would ever dare to invent. It has a mythic quality that echoes Greek tragedy. An over-the-top Gothic narrative. A classic Tennessee Williams play set to music. A soap opera of the mind. For me, though, the story is Grey Gardens because the Edie Beales were the ultimate survivors. They continued to stay afloat no matter what life threw at them. They enjoyed life and they fought to live it even if, Grey Gardens times, their battle armor happened to be expressed in outlandish costumes! They refused Grey Gardens see themselves as objects of pity. These women were Grey Gardens individuals Grey Gardens repudiated nothing and refused to compromise anything. Their personal liberty was a continuum. If they could Grey Gardens extracted that dogged, authentic Beale essence and bottled it, they would have certainly been millionaires many times over. Edith is dry and quick-witted - a singer, married but later separated, a member of high society. Edie is voluble, dresses - as she puts it - for combat in tight ensembles that include scarves wrapped around her head. There are hints that Edie came home 24 years before to be cared for rather than to care for her mother. The women Grey Gardens the camera, talking over each other, moving from the present to events years before. They're odd, with flinty affection for each other. I saw this Grey Gardens a couple of weeks ago, and it's been stuck in Grey Gardens head ever since. It stars two spellbinding characters Grey Gardens what is unfortunately a mediocre documentary. To get the true story of the Beales, I had to wade through all of the DVD's bonus material and commentaries and search the web. Although the Maysles and their fans not to mention Edith and Edie themselves bristle at the suggestion that this film is exploitative, this is exploitation in the truest sense of the Grey Gardens. Very little effort is every made to explain the Beales or how they came to the condition they were in - the Maysles approach seems to be to just turn the camera on and wait for Edith and Edie to say something outrageous. The sound, even on the Criterion re-release is poor and difficult Grey Gardens follow. Although I appreciate this film was made somewhat early in the history of documentary Grey Gardens, it's ironic to compare it to Geraldo Rivera's! To paraphrase a review in the New Yorker, there were many things Edith and Edie needed in their lives, and a documentary wasn't one of them. As for Edith and Edie, the thing I kept thinking while watching the film was "where the Grey Gardens is their family"? They were living in dangerous, unhealthy, unsafe conditions. How is it Grey Gardens Jackie O, married to one of the richest men on Grey Gardens or the wealthy Grey Gardens family themselves couldn't afford to get Edith and Edie a decent home? Or at the very least hire a part-time housekeeper or caregiver to come in and keep an eye on them both? It's shameful and a lasting disgrace to the entire Bouvier family. Although this review may sound negative I would strongly recommend Grey Gardens to anyone who enjoys documentaries. Perhaps someday someone will come along and do a documentary about this documentary - bringing in the rich backstory and afterstory of the Beales and the whole subsection of Hamptons society in the 's. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival but was not entered into the main competition. Inthe film was selected by the Library of Congress Grey Gardens preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The two women lived together at the Grey Gardens Grey Gardens for decades with limited funds in increasing squalor and isolation. The house was called Grey Gardens because of the color of the dunes, the cement garden walls, and the sea mist. Little Edie 1 Entstehung und Wirkung Auf den Weg nach Grey Gardens machten sich Albert und David Maysles im Jahr 1972 – und zwar auf Geheiß Lee Radziwills, der jüngeren Schwester der ehemaligen First Lady Jacqueline („Jackie“) Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.1 Radzi- will hatte die Brüder damit beauftragt, eine Art kinematografisches Familien- album ihrer Kindheit zu erstellen, und ihnen zu diesem Zweck eine Liste von Personen und Orten ausgehändigt, die ihrer Meinung nach in dem Film nicht fehlen sollten. Auf ihr genannt waren unter anderem ihre zum damaligen Zeit- punkt 77-jährige Tante Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale („Big Edie“), ihre 54-jährige Cousine Edith Bouvier Beale („Little Edie“) sowie Grey Gardens, ein Sommer- anwesen in East Hampton auf Long Island, New York, das die beiden Beales seit 1952 gemeinsam bewohnten.2 Getrost wird man annehmen dürfen, dass es allein die (Kindheits-)Erinnerungen an die Schönheit des 1897 erbauten Ge- bäudes und seiner Lage direkt am Meer waren, die Radziwill Grey Gardens mit auf die Liste hat nehmen lassen, dass dagegen eine genaue Kenntnis des aktu- ellen Zustands des Hauses sie davon abgehalten hätte.
