Foreward Umaru Musa Yar’adua University had another successful year in 2017. With the continued support of the government and all other Stakeholders. The State Government approved the establishment of Faculty of Agriculture at Layin Minista on a site of about 180 hectares of land, and there was support and commitment for the take-off of the long awaited Faculty of Medicine. Additional postgraduate programmes were introduced in the Faculties of Education and Natural and Applied Science with a resultant increase in the postgraduate students in the University. The Visitor to the University approved the appointment of Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim, CON, mni, Talban Katsina as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the University. Overall Umaru Musa Yar’adua University had a successful year with timely completion of the academic year. There were improvements in the standard and quality of teaching and results processing as a result of dedication from staff. The e-learning programme for example took up with the Faculty of Law with customized hardware and softaware teaching and instruction materials. Staff were actively involved in research, seminars, attendance to conferences and community service. The mutual relationships within and outside the university community were maintained. The 2017 Annual reports highlights developments and the achievements of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katina in governance, human resource, academic activities, finances and physical infrastructure.

1. INTRODUCTION For Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, 2017 was quite successful year as it strides towards attaining new heights of academic excellence. It has significantly invested in the development of it manpower for quality teaching and research and it is reaping its benefit as most of its academic staff have PhD qualifications. This annual report contains the significant activities accomplished during the year in the area of academic and administrative Units, teaching and research activities, human resource and staff development, linkages, sporting activities and financial outlook. The University has made commendable efforts in the year despite the numerous challenges encountered.

There are six (6) functional branch libraries. The following were the summary of activities carried out during the year under review across the branch Libraries of the Faculties of the University from January, to December, 2017:

S/no Title 1.00 Introduction The faculty libraries exist to provide an extensive and an enabling study environment for staff and students to conduct their research and studies well. It also supports the main library in terms of provision and access to print and non- print material for entire University Community. The faculty libraries houses collection of materials such as reference materials, books, past questions papers, past projects and journals for use to the entire university community. 2.00 Statistics 2.1 Faculty of Natural and Applied Science Library Total users for the year were 30,420 and 7,500 book consulted. 2.3 Faculty of Humanities Library Total users for the year were 11,940 and 4,296 books consulted

2.4 Faculty of Social and Management Science Library Total users for the year were 17,400 and 11,184 books consulted, 1,104 books were loaned and 2,064 books were returned. 2.5 Faculty of Law Library Total users for the year were 6,252 and 5,124 books consulted.

4.0 Academic and Research Activities The year under review was another remarkable year as all the academic activities of the University went smoothly. The university in its effort to be among the best in terms of teaching and research continues to encourage its staff to participate more in researches, attendance to conferences and community development projects.

The University during the year was engaged in conducting various researches among them is the Development of Micro-Flush Toilet for Public Institutions and Rural Communities.

Research on Development of Facility for Bio-Ethanol Production from Cellulosic Material was also carried out in the University.

Another research carried out in the year under review is the Development of Improved Mud Stove for Indoor Cooking. This research was funded under the EU project. The research has been completed and the proto-type has been constructed at the University and also deployed to the 5 LGAs under the project.

Other Activities

During the year, a Professional Training Course on Mini-Grid Design was carried out. The course was organized as a result of the strong advocacy for deployment of mini- grid electricity supply systems for both rural and industrial end use and to reduce the huge energy supply gap facing the Country. The course was to enable electrical engineers to plan, design, analyze and commission renewable energy systems, supervise construction and provide related advisory services – in conformity with the requirements of the Nigerian Competency Standards for Clean Energy. It also aimed at designing Rural Mini-Grid Renewable Energy Systems with Focus on Solar PV and Micro Hydropower.

Another successful activity in the year was the commencement of additional Five (5) Postgraduate programmes in the Faculty of Education and One (1) Postgraduate programme in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences.

During the year, the University had its 2nd Convocation ceremony. The Convocation Lecture was titled: Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina: The First Ten Years.

At the occasion, The University conferred a total of 1,091 degrees in different classes for the 2016/2017 academic session. The postgraduate school also successfully graduated 69 students.
