OF THE CUATRO CIENEGAS BASIN, COAHUILA, MEXICO Robert Hershlerl Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center, Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, TX 78666, U.S.A. ABSTRACT This study gives detailed morphological descriptions, including aspects of shell and soft-part anatomy, for 12 species of nine genera of hydrobiid snails (Gastropoda: Rissoacea) from the isolated desert spring system of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila, Mexico. Snails were collected from 103 localities in the basin and summaries of the distribution and ecology for each species are given. One new genus and three new species are described. The six nominal species of Mexipyrgus are reduced to one variable species, Mexipyrgus churinceanus, as there are no suites of morphological features that can consistently define separate taxa when a large number of populations is studied. A multivariate morphological analysis of Mexipyrgus churinceanus, involving 20 morphological characters from 33 pop- ulations in the basin, shows that the trends of variation only partly follow the distribution of populations among the drainage systems of the basin. Contrary to previous thought, there are no subfamilies of hydrobiids endemic to the Cuatro Cienegas basin; all taxa studied belong to either the Nymphophilinae or Littoridininae, widely distributed subfamilies. Five genera and at least nine species are endemic to the basin. Phenetic and phyletic analyses show that of the five endemic genera, three are more closely related to nonendemic genera found in the basin than to each other, suggesting a polyphyletic origin for the endemic snails. The endemic snails may also be of a more recent and local origin than once thought. -

SIMONE ABSTRACT Spiripockia punctata is a new genus and species of Pomatiopsidae found in a cave from Serra Ramalho, SW Bahia, Brazil. The taxon is troglobiont (restricted to subterranean realm), and is characterized by the shell weakly elongated, fragile, translucent, normally sculptured by pus‑ tules with periostracum hair on tip of pustules; peristome highly expanded; umbilicus opened; radular rachidian with 6 apical and 3 pairs of lateral cusps; osphradium short, arched; gill filaments with rounded tip; prostate flattened, with vas deferens inserting subterminally; penis duct narrow and weakly sinuous; pallial oviduct simple anteriorly, possessing convoluted by‑ pass connecting base of bulged portion of transition between visceral and pallial oviducts with base of seminal receptacle; spermathecal duct complete, originated from albumen gland. The description of this endemic species may raise protective environmental actions to that cave and to the Serra Ramalho Karst area. The list contains 193 species, representing 13 families and 61 genera. Of these, 103 species (53.4%) and 12 genera are endemic to Mexico, and 75 species are considered local endemics because of their restricted distribution to very small areas. Using NatureServe Ranking, 9 species (4.7%) are considered possibly or presumably extinct, 40 (20.7%) are critically imperiled, 30 (15.5%) are imperiled, 15 (7.8%) are vulnerable and only 64 (33.2%) are currently stable. -

In the present study we evaluated the contact and distant effects of P. canaliculata in its native range on exotic (Melanoides tuberculata and Physa acuta) and native snails (Heleobia parchappii, Biomphalaria peregrina,andChilina parchappii). Habitat use was affected in P. acuta, H. parchappii, and B. peregrina by contact effects of P. canaliculata, whereas survival was only affected in P. acuta through combined contact and distant effects. Fecundity was reduced in P. acuta and B. peregrina by combined contact and distant effects; evidence of egg mass predation was also observed in both spe- cies. Melanoides tuberculata was not affected at all by P. canaliculata. The snail species with higher withdrawal responses to contacts with P. canaliculata were those that suffered less mortality by cor- poral contact, whereas snails with high crawling away responses suffered from higher mortality. -

The mollusc fauna of the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia contains at least 158 mollusc species, 73 of which are introduced as new; 13 are described in open nomenclature. Four genera are introduced (the cochliopid genera Feliconcha and Glabertryonia, and the corbulid genera Pachy- rotunda and Concentricavalva) and a nomen novum is introduced for one genus (Longosoma). A neotype is designated for Liosoma glabra Conrad, 1874a. The Pebas fauna is taxonomically dominated by two fami- lies, viz. the Cochliopidae (86 species; 54%) and Corbulidae (23 species; 15%). The fauna can be character- ised as aquatic (155 species; 98%), endemic (114 species; 72%) and extinct (only four species are extant). Many of the families represented by a few species in the Pebas fauna include important ecological groups, such as indicators of marine infl uence (e.g., Nassariidae, one species), terrestrial settings (e.g., Acavidae, one species) and stagnant to marginally agitated freshwaters (e.g., Planorbidae, four species). -

In the laboratory, we separated subsamples for both histology and parasite-emergence assessment. The former examined the gonadal- development stages in relation to larval presence along with the effect of the larvae on the gonadal tissue and calculated parasite prevalence per age and size. Larval prevalence increased with host length and was greater in post-reproductive-stage individuals, more than 7.5 mm long the parasitism reached 100%. That stage became maximal in August, while juveniles predominated in December and January. The females were predominant almost throughout the year, but were parasitized at the same frequency as the males (p=0.38).
