It seems like the loud rhetoric filling the airwaves and print and social media is getting more extreme and inflammatory, even when we are talking about something that should be as non-controversial as making sure our citizenry has some basic level of health care. I have to wonder why this is an approach so many are taking. Not only are these loud conversations obnoxious, they don’t work. As an OB/GYN and someone who has volunteered for Planned Parenthood for several years, I have seen firsthand that meaningful conversations happen when people engage in respectful dialogue. These conversations don’t have the fireworks that we see on television. R. Elaine Hanson, M.D. Chair, Board of Directors There’s a lot of active listening and quiet introspection, which doesn’t make for great entertainment, but is one of the only ways to create lasting change in ourselves and others.
