3 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Is it just me, or is the world getting louder?

It seems like the loud rhetoric filling the airwaves and print and social media is getting more extreme and inflammatory, even when we are talking about something that should be as non-controversial as making sure our citizenry has some basic level of health care.

I have to wonder why this is an approach so many are taking. Not only are these loud conversations obnoxious, they don’t work.

As an OB/GYN and someone who has volunteered for Planned Parenthood for several years, I have seen firsthand that meaningful conversations happen when people engage in respectful dialogue. These conversations don’t have the fireworks that we see on television. R. Elaine Hanson, M.D. Chair, Board of Directors There’s a lot of active listening and quiet introspection, which doesn’t make for great entertainment, but is one of the only ways to create lasting change in ourselves and others.

I am so proud of the fact that Planned Parenthood doesn’t resort to theatrics. Every day, we are in schools, churches, and community groups offering medically accurate information that { protects people’s health. Our approach is not dramatic, but the results certainly are. Planned Parenthood helps prevent nearly half of a million unintended pregnancies nationwide each year. And that’s just from our contraceptive services and education. Countless STDs are EVERY DAY, WE ARE IN prevented because we are quietly, respectfully providing care no matter what. SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, AND COMMUNITY GROUPS Recently I had a wonderful conversation with a teacher who works at one of the charter OFFERING MEDICALLY schools where Planned Parenthood offers sexuality education. We shared our own ACCURATE INFORMATION upbringing, laughing at the similarities and pondering the differences. She and I talked about THAT PROTECTS how to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy and how education is critical. We discussed PEOPLE’S HEALTH. abortion and how no one can really understand a woman’s situation because we’re not in her shoes. It is these small conversations that matter most.

Let me be clear, there is a time for raising our voices. Planned Parenthood is a health care { organization with deep roots in the social justice movement. When there is injustice in the world, we are there marching with our allies demanding change. In context, I can definitely turn up the volume.

I am grateful that in our everyday work, we are a calm and measured voice in a world filled with noise. Thank you for your continued support of Planned Parenthood. Youare not shouting about your contributions, but rest assured, your voice is heard and deeply appreciated.

Please contact us if you would like guidance on how to discuss with friends and family the economic, political, religious, or human rights aspects of our sexuality education and advocacy work. We want to support you in being an ambassador for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest CHOICE WORDS | SPRING 2015 Planned Parenthood
