The paper presents the short history of formation of the Herbarium and the list of the Asteraceae fam- ily plants which are stored in the Herbarium Fund of the Adyghe State University. Keywords: the Herbarium fund, Northwest Caucasus, inventory, Asteraceae, electronic catalog, database. 1. Introduction The tribe Cichoriae Lam. & DC. (syn. Lactuceae Cass.) represents one the most studied groups of Asteraceae family especially thanks to several genera such as Crepis L., Hieracium L., Pilosella Hill. or Taraxacum Wigg. and economically important genera as Lactuca. Cichoriaea is well morphologically and antomically defined (occurrence of milky latex and homogamous capitula with 5-dentate, lingulate flowers have been constantly respected characters since the time of its description; Tournefort 1964). Taxonomic situation inside of the tribe is more complicated, i.e. that the majority of above mentioned genera are generally well known because of polyploidy, hybridisation and apomixis frequently resulting in highly intricated taxonomic classifications. The aim of a taxonomic treatment is to mirror real situation in nature usually expressed by numerous "microspecies" representing particular apomictic lineages 1. Nevertheless, system of these complex taxonomic treatments can hardly be natural as hybridisation (even an ancient one) results in reticulate evolution. Hieracium s. l. Formal genus Hieracium sensu lato has recently been more frequently treated as two separete genera (Hieracium and Pilosella ; Sell & West 1975, Bräutigam & Greuter 2007), which is why genus ranks Hieracium and Pilosella are used separately in further text. Genera Hieracium and Pilosella comprise perennial herbs with 1 to numerous stems (foliaged or leafless) terminated by 1 to numerous capitula. Leaves are shaped from entire to deeply dentate or lobed. Involucres are formed by several irregularly imbricate rows of linear to lanceolate bracts. Individual ligules are usually yellow (sometimes with a red stripe on the outer face or rarely orange, reddish, green or white). Achenes are covered in 10 to 13 ribs of narrowly obconical shape (never beaked) carrying 1 or 2-rowed pappus (e.g.

'y CHROMOSOMES AND PHYLOGENY IN CREPIS BY LILLIAN HOLLINGSHEAD AND ERNEST B. BABCOCK inn University of California Publications in Agricultural Sciences Volume 6, No. 1, pp. 1-53, 24 figures in text Issued January 4, 1930 University of California Press Berkeley, California Cambridge University Press London, England CHROMOSOMES AND PHYLOGENY IN CREPIS BY LILLIAN HOLLINGSHEAD and EENEST B. BABCOCK INTRODUCTION In connection with genetic and taxonomic studies of Crepis, an examination of as many species as could be brought into cultivation has been in progress for about ten years. The earlier work on the chromosomes was done by Dr. Margaret Mann Lesley, who studied particularly numbers and sizes (Mann, 1922, 1925; Babcock and Lesley, 1926). The work of M. Navashin (1925, 1926) and Taylor (1925, 1926), who described satellites and constrictions for the first time in this genus, showed that a closer morphological study of the chromosomes from suitably fixed material would be of value for com- parative studies of related species. It is the purpose of this paper to present our knowledge of number and morphology of the chromosomes in seventy species and to con- sider this evidence in relation to a system of classification based on phylogenetic relationship. But the present paper is not intended to serve as a taxonomic treatise. Therefore no keys or descriptions of species will appear and there will be no attempt to set forth the detailed evidence for the phylogenetic groupings proposed, as such descriptions and data will appear in a taxonomic treatment now in preparation. The specific names used have been carefully verified as to identity, priority, and authorship, and are in nearly every case the same as those which will be used in later publications.

Estella Nazarova Chromosomal polymorphism in Armenian population of Crepis panno nica (Asteraceae) Abstract Nazarova, E.: Chromosomal polymorphism in Annenian population of Crepis pannonica (Asteraceae). - Bocconea 13: 377-382. 2001. - ISSN 1120-4060. A population of Crepis pannonica, growing in the Hosrov reserve in Armenia, at the southem limit ofthe species' area, has been investigated over a period ofmore than 20 years. An extraor dinary chromosomal polymorphism has been detected by the study ofroot tip mitoses ofseed lings. 40 different chromosome complement variants were found, including a full range of aneuploids, B-chromosomes, structural hetero- and homozygotes, witnessing active chromoso mal restructuring and karyotype evolution. Introduction Crepis pannonica (Jacq.) K. Koch is a perenni al cross-pollinating species ranging from CentraI Europe to West Siberia. Its karyotype formula is 2n = 8 = AA (SM) + BB (SA) + CC (SM) + DD (N) (Nazarova 1976, see also Babcock 1947). We have been investigating the Hosrov reserve population of Crepis pannonica, in CentraI Armenia, for over 20 years. Being situated at the southemmast edge of the vast area of the species, this population attracted our attention because of its unusual karyo logical polymorphism. Throughaut our investigatians we did not find a single plant whose seed progeny was completely exempt of deviations in karyological features. In some years (1973, 1978, and 1984) the population was totally seed-sterile in spite of abundant flow ering. In the other years, both sterile plants and plants with reduced fertility (from 1.8 % to 78.3 % of germinating seeds) were faund. Obviously, the generative reproduction of C. pannonica in this population is very depressed.

  • Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control
ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Second, revised and expanded edition Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. • Doronicum Orientale POTW
Of interest this week at Beal... Caucasian Leopardbane Doronicum orientale Family: the Sunflower family, Asteraceae Also called Leopards Bane, Leopards Bane Daisy, W. J. Beal False Leopards Bane Botanical Garden If you are having trouble with too many leopards roaming your yard, Caucasian Leopardbane could be what you have been looking for. Its name points to the reputation the plant acquired long ago that it could repel various wild animals. It is even thought to be unappealing to cottontail rabbits. Most who plant this yellow- flowered perennial keep it for its pure yellow mid-spring color. The most vigorous specimens can attain about a meter (3 ft) in height and there are several horticultural varieties. Ours may be seen in bed 40, of the systematic collection. Caucasian Leopardbane is one of some 26 species in the genus Doronicum that are distributed across Europe, Asia, and north Africa. Doronicum orientale is found throughout southeastern Europe, across the Carpathian mountains, and in Italy. All known Doronicum species are yellow-flowered perennials that form vegetative colonies via rhizomes. Their flower heads are typical of the composite habit seen frequently throughout the sunflower family, the Asteraceae (see next page). The tendency to flower in April or May, then to disappear before the first week of July, makes Doronicum almost qualify as a spring ephemeral. In the perennial flower garden, Doronicum likes moderately moist partially shaded sites, but is tolerant of full sun. In southern localities, it depends on supplemental watering to prevent its burning away into dormancy during the hottest months of summer. Tazlaciu and Erol (1998) report that Leopards Bane appears in several medieval herbals including its listing as a diuretic, from the above-ground parts, in Turkey.
