GBA Film Summary Team Members: Ng Ai Xin Jean, Ng Qi Yin, Ng Zhi GBA film summary Team members: Ng Ai Xin Jean, Ng Qi Yin, Ng Zhi Jun, Niew Chiew Min Emmelyn, Nurul Haziqah Binte Mohamed Rafit Our video aims to provide an overview of the history of the Kranji War Memorial and its significance to the Japanese Occupation and World War II. Despite its rich historical value, the Kranji War Memorial is not as popular as other historical sites like Changi Chapel and Museum. Hence, we hope that this video sheds a light on this “forgotten” historical site. Furthermore, you would realize that our video was filmed from a child’s perspective. This was intentional so as to highlight the importance of teaching history to the younger generations. The Kranji War Memorial is a result of a significant event of the past. It was built to commemorate men from countries like Australia, Britain, New Zealand and India who perished during the war (Singapore Tourism Board, 2016). As it is the final resting place for men who died honourably in exchange for our freedom, we believe that it is part of both local and world history. Singapore might not be what it is today if not for the sacrifices of these men. Filming this video was an overall pleasant experience for us. However, we had to face several challenges like the bad weather and the short timeframe given for this task. Due to heavy rain, we had to hasten our filming process and we were not able to explore the Kranji War Memorial thoroughly. Furthermore, we had to exclude certain artefacts such as the Manchukuo and Straits Settlement stamps and some of the elaborations on the points raised in the video so as to fit within the short timeframe allocated. However, despite our struggles, we are glad to be given this opportunity to learn about this beautiful historical site which is rich in both local and world history. Historical sites like these are part of our roots and should not be forgotten. It serves as a reminder that we should not to take our freedom for granted as it came with a heavy price. HH3022 World War II and Southeast Asia Semester 1, AY 2017/18; Academic Units: 3 Venue: LHS-TR+32 Time: Tuesdays, 15:30-18:30 Course Instructor: Assistant Professor ZHOU Taomo Office: HSS 05-22 (Please email me to make an appointment) Email: [email protected] I. Course Description In August 1945 the US dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, bringing to an end the Second World War (or WWII). Yet in Southeast Asia, the end of the three year, 9 month and 1 day occupation by Japan marked only the beginning of another round of intense conflicts. Events of 1941-45 led to destabilization of every country in the region and dramatically affected the ability of Western colonial powers to regain their colonial territories. Japan presented to Southeast Asian countries renewed hope and renewed fear but changed the way the people in the region thought of themselves in any event. As a result, revolutions of national independence were waged in nearly every Southeast Asian country after WWII ended. Was Japanese occupation of Southeast Asia the same as Western colonization, only on a more intense scale time-wise? Or were Japan’s “crowbar” effects crucial for the development of postwar independence movements? How do we understand WWII in relation to the birth and rise of a new Asian world? In this class, we seek to answer these questions by studying WWII in Southeast Asia through a country-by-country approach. For each country or group of countries, the following aspects will be discussed: Situations before the outbreak of the war, especially with regards to Western colonial powers; the timeline of Japanese invasion and involvement; the economic, political and cultural changes that occurred during the Japanese occupation; the end of the war and post-war repercussions.
